Today my trip would be half over. Every day after today I would be closer to home. I reluctantly left Ocean Front hostel in San Diego as it was the best hostel I would stay at on this trip. Traffic was light considering what I was expecting for Southern California and I made good time all the way to the base of mountain near Yosemite. At this point the roads narrow and go up a winding mountain route. I lowered the gear on my car and drove very slowly up the mountain. It was slow going and the roads were slippery because it had started to snow. I got to Yosemite hostel and checked in. It was deserted as the one in St Louis and I was informed they weren't expecting any tourist until a few ... read more

Geo: 37.7163, -119.665We got up early, hopped onto Wawona Road, and headed down into the Valley. The early morning was fairly clear, and it was quickly evident there were a lot less tourists than usual. Which is a blessing when the weather is rainy. People just lose their brains when the water falls from the sky. And Yosemite can get VERY congested with traffic and people. So this was an awesome change! I rarely get to be there when there are so few people about. =DWe first stopped at the Bridge Tunnel View and got some great shots of the valley before the clouds took over. Then we hiked up to Lower Yosemite Falls. Normally, I would never call it a hike- it's an easy walk on pavement, and it's just insulting to say it's more ... read more

Day 14 We get up early as we have a long drive before we hit Yosemite and lots we want to do once we are there. The drive feels longer than it is because of how slow you drive given the conditions but the views definitely make it worthwhile. We stop just outside the park in a layby by the lake and take a few pictures and just sit and enjoy the beauty. Hotel number 9 is in Curry Village within Yosemite National Park and a place we have stayed before. The accommodation is as close to camping as I want to get with bears often spotted nearby! They are raised canvas tents with locked green cabinets outside to store all food and smelly items. We had planned to do the tour of the Village floor ... read more

Geo: 37.8772, -119.727DAY FOUR: In-SPIRE-ing!We awoke to snow! I was delighted. Not a lot, mind you, but enough to make everything white and wonderful. If only briefly.I ate a quick breakfast and headed out back … from the hotel to the Merced River. Beautiful river. Quaint stone bridge. And monoliths of all sorts and sizes. A John Muir experience. We boarded our Tauck bus for the Curry Center. There we had a presentation by Michael Adams, son of photographer Ansel Adams and retired physician. He basically described his father's lifelong love affair with Yosemite. As a child, he would embark on adventures with his father, and his own camera. He had story after story about his parents, and many, many magnificent Ansel Adams photos (of the 40,000+ photos taken in his lifetime). His father was a very ... read more

Geo: 37.8772, -119.727Day Three: Monolith"It was like lying in a great solemn cathedral." Teddy Roosevelt about Yosemite. We left San Francisco in traffic and headed east through Oakland and Berkley on our way to California's Central Valley. It was raining, which made photographs challenging.Nicole gave us some history of the area and then some history on Yosemite. The Central Valley is referred to as the great food basket of the world. The Valley produces many food items: almonds, walnuts, persimmons, strawberries, peaches, citrus and date palms, among others. We stopped at the Oakdale Cheese Factory where folks bought fresh cheeses and nuts, mostly for the journey. We wandered through a lot of small towns and then stopped in Jamestown, famous for its steam railroad. Many a movie (“My Little Chickadee”, “High Noon”) and TV episod... read more

Yosemite... Where do I even start? In the span of the two days we spent in this park- during this trip, I experience by far the worst moment, and best moment of my life. It started with the worst: We arrived, and decided to go on a small hike. The man at the entrance booth told us to stroll around these big tree's- about a 2 mile hike. So we park the car, get out and start walking around. 2 Miles isn't that far right? I don’t know where we went wrong but somehow, we ended up on a trail trying to find a “Fallen Tunnel Tree”. In my mind, I was thinking a giant tree fell, and it was in the path, so they hollowed out the tree, making it a tunnel. Sounds pretty damn ... read more

We've lived in California for more than 6 years now until this weekend hadn't made it to Yosemite Valley for a visit. This park is one of the most incredible natural wonders of the world, and we took full advantage of the weekend with refreshing hikes, amazing scenery, and food and accommodations at a world class lodge - the Ahwahnee.... read more

It's hard to believe that we've only been travelling in the USA for four days so far as so much has happened in that short time. On Friday we caught the ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles then set off on a long drive through Washington, which is reminiscent of British Columbia, vast evergreen forests and extensive waterways, into Oregon which is real 'big country'. We passed through one quite large city, Portland, but most of the time we enjoyed wonderful views of vast areas of pictuesque wilderness. En route we stopped at a Gator Sports Bar in Tigard, Oregon which looked like the bar from Coyote Ugly with endless TV screens, each showing a different sport. Our waitress was wearing psychedelic tights with great big holes in them and we were expecting someone to start ... read more
