July 1 Up Bright and early for day two of the adventure. Ok…truth be told bright, but not too early! The sun was blazing and the temps were high. Our 7:00 am departure time quickly became 9:00 am but we are on vacation, so no worries! Our first stop on this amazing adventure . . . Sam’s club. Yes we are the adventurous ones! We were a bit early for their “regular” shoppers as only Business or “Plus” members were allowed in early. However, the vacation gods provided us with a lovely greeter, Miss Shirley. This older, grandmotherly lady let us slide in to buy the case of water we needed. Shirley was a sweet, pleasant lady, the kind of person that gets the day off to a good start; she even let us use her ... read more

It was a delight to wake up in San Diego! Off the ship we went to the Ferry just a short jaunt away with friends Bob and Sandra. They wished to come along with us as we went on our excursion to take a look at the condo we will rent in January, 2016. Upon arrival on Coronado Island, a free shuttle was waiting to take us downtown leaving us off in front of City Hall. We then waited for a bus to take us to the Coronado Cays about 3 or 4 miles south of town. After a little walk we found the condo and took pictures and strolled the neighborhood a bit. We felt quite pleased at what we found - should be a great home for 3 months next year. Back on the ... read more

From a letter written June 1st It's been about a week since I left San Diego, where I culminated the end of my Pacific coast portion by visiting two good friends, Ryan and Barbara, and their dog Moonshine. Ryan is a fellow student who I met through an experiential retreat hosted by the students of Bastyr of San Diego--the "Restore the Vis" retreat. It's similar to the Revitalization retreat. * I was very exited to make the stop and we had so much fun and further solidified a life-long friendship. I got to sit in on a homeopathy class one day and we went surfing with the dolphins another day! Ryan and Barbara are amazing, and our numerous dinner conversations proved very thought provoking and a nice break from road silence hour after hour, day after ... read more

The plan for today, our last day in San Diego, is to see as much as possible of Balboa Park. Originally known simply as City Park in the 19th century, it was selected as the site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal and renamed in honour of the Spanish explorer. Over the years, other exhibitions were held there and other buildings built. Many were turned into museums and gradually the park became the city's museum centre. We take a taxi from the hotel to the park. We buy a package that allows us to enter up to five different museums during the day. First pick is the Air and Space Museum. It's similar to other museums of its type, with a variety of aircraft on the floor and suspended ... read more

Here are a few fun facts about our driving habits: 1. We usually have the windows rolled down, blaring either John Mayer or alt-J. 2. Only once have I chauffeured Kayli around while she was still sleeping in bed. 3. We never drive at night. 4. We stop to explore whenever we desire. 5. We are passed by most, including semis because we rarely drive above 50 M.P.H. (We just smile and wave) With this last fact in mind, you can imagine how overwhelmed we were upon entering San Diego. We were forced to drive at speeds our poor little van could barely handle. Where are all of these people going in such a hurry anyway? After a stressful few hours on the freeway, Kayli and I found comfort in the most unlikely of places, the ... read more

Blissful sleep-in morning. Today the plan is to hook up with Vi's cousin Mike, who lives in San Diego. Mike and his wife (whom we have never met before) pick us up around 11 and whisk us to brunch at a really interesting restaurant called the 94th Aero Squadron. The restaurant sits alongside an old airfield that is still used by smaller single-engine planes and vintage aircraft. The restaurant picks up this theme and features decor and memorabilia from the air forces of the first and second world war. The spread is fantastic, especially the seafood, which includes about three different types of salmon, numerous shellfish, Alaska king crab and much more. Bottomless champagne flutes ensure that everyone is happy. We eat outside on a patio, where we have front-row seats to planes and helicopters landing ... read more

Up early to submit to U.S. customs on board, mandatory for all non-U.S. citizens. Long wait. Our guy has trouble finding our entry stamp in our passports, which I guess is more important than I thought. But, of course, it is there. Relatively efficient disembarkation. Outside the weather is beautiful; warm but not humid, not a single cloud in the sky. I call our hotel, which sends over a van to pick us up. The hotel is not too far away from the cruise port, located on the outskirts of San Diego Old Town. After checking in at the hotel, we spend the day exploring Old Town. This is a reconstruction of the original San Diego town on the original site, the first permanent European mission on the Pacific Coast in 1769 and the first official ... read more
