Geo: 32.7157, -117.162A brief word about the ship which left Los Angeles at 6pm and arrived in San Diego the following morning having sailed very slowly. (It is only a 3 hour drive!) The Seven Seas Explorer is a new ship which has been dubbed by the company, Regent, as the most luxurious cruise ship ever built. It is very well appointed with lots of marble and rather dark furnishings- too dark for my taste. The art works are also not what I would have purchased but art is a personal thing. The cabin is very nicely designed with a huge balcony. Only hope there will be enough sun to enable me to sit on it! We soon settled into our usual routine which is mainly based around food and drink! Champagne on the balcony to ... read more

Vi ... read more

We are heading back west to LA nearly completing our California/Oregon/Washington/Montana/Wyoming/Colorado/Arizona/Nevada (phew!) loop. Leaving Silverton we headed to Mesa Verdi National Park. This park is different from other US parks in that its main aim is to preserve the buildings of the ancient Puebloans, who settled here in the 13th century, staying only about 75 years. They left behind unique mysterious dwellings built into the cliff face, added to the fact that we had to drive high into these hills that overlook the surrounding plains, building and living in these dwelling must have presented great challenges. They would have farmed food and kept their animals up on the top plains, then climbed down into their dwellings. After stopping at various overlooks and the museum we drove back down the hills for an overnight stay in Cortez. ... read more

Went down to Wild Bills casino floor for a McDonalds coffee (only thing open) around 6:30am. In the vast floor with the usual array of blaring casino sights and sounds there was only one person in the whole place - I checked. He was asleep at a slot machine. At least I am not the only person on the planet. McDonalds coffee is a sort of liquid Soylent Green except it tastes of the cup, not of the alternative. I purposely wanted to leave early as the winds were supposed to gust to 40 mph later. The plan was to cut off I15 to Twentynine Palms, but as I closed in on the intersection my oil light went on and knowing there would be no gas that way through the Navajo reservation I kept going along ... read more

Geo: 32.7157, -117.162Well. I contracted the plague. Probably from my petri dish toddler (both she and grandma were sick this past week), plus I'd been having too fun adventuring so it was bound to catch up with me. I woke up very weak, and feeling like a truck hit me. I barely made it down to the restaurant to put some food in my mouth before dragging myself back into my bed loaded up on meds. Chris took Arya to the San Diego Zoo- something he and I were both very excited to do together. There was no way I would have had any energy, though. Now we have an excuse to come back. ;DSo while I sweated out a few fevers and dozed in and out of sleep for four hours, Chris and Arya enjoyed ... read more

Geo: 32.7157, -117.162We got up a little before 8am, and poor Arya's eyes were crusted over. :( Still fighting that eye infection. We cleaned her up, put fresh meds on, fed her oatmeal (the ONLY breakfast in her mind) and then headed to the hotel pool patio where they were serving a continental breakfast. I like that breakfast is more common these days in hotels. :) I made myself a waffle- or, rather, a nice guy made me a waffle because he saw I had my hands full with a toddler who couldn't touch the ground at the moment (too many people and she gets shy). I think Chris had eggs and bacon. Arya pilfered bits of my waffle and Chris' apple juice. The coffee was incredibly gross for some reason but everything else was good. After ... read more

After my four hour nighttime nap in Denver, I jumped on a plane to sunny San Diego to visit one of my oldest friends. We met during my senior year in high school, were on the yearbook staff together (nerds!), and even went to prom together. We’ve kept in touch through his going away to college, my moves to Florida and back and in polar opposite temperatures, his heading to Ukraine for the Peace Corps then later moving away “for good” to the west coast, but we still meet up every time he comes home. I figured it was my turn to visit him. (Plus, I had some use-it-or-lose-it vacation saved up!) I chugged my soy vanilla latte as we cruised down the freeway to his City Heights apartment. Apparently San Diego is a very expensive ... read more

When you try to imagine a beach town in California, you picture beautiful clean beaches, surfers, dog walkers, joggers and sun worshippers all collectively enjoying a carefree existence. San Diego seems to be the epitome of that (Ocean beach area anyway). Quiet streets lined with palm trees on either side, low buildings, restaurants galore and a vibe so relaxed time almost seems to stop. After travelling from city to city for 3 weeks straight we were looking forward to some beach time, even if it would only be brief. We arrived (slightly tired as usual) by greyhound from Las Vegas in Downtown San Diego. Catching the tram/trolley and then a bus, we finally made it to Ocean Beach. As soon as we stepped off the bus we immediately fell in love with the area, it definitely ... read more
