With our room darkening shades over the single window that provides a view to the outside world, we know little of what's going on. I do know, however, that the ship is no longer moving and I can hear the aft access door directly below us opening. Using my tremendous brain power, I have determined that we are are in port at San Diego, the end of our journey. We'll, not quite. We have one more excursion on our list, a view of the "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous in San Diego", presented by Scarlett & Jonathan, daughter and grandson. This should prove to be exciting, entertaining, different, expensive and perhaps a bit dangerous. Anyway, our day starts out very typical of the past three weeks. Thanks to the crew working below us, we're up ... read more

Top of the Morning! We have landed the RV in Escondido and spent the night at Jen and Chris's in San Diego. Had fun at the Bay Club's St. Patrick's Day party last night and now we are enjoying the company of two tiny and adorable leprechauns! The weather is cool here in SoCal! And there has been rain each night but the days are sunny! We are happy and blessed to be here with family in this beautiful house enjoying the sunshine. Enjoy your green beer today! All about the food now. Hodad’s last night on Broadway and 10th , about 8 blocks from the Hostel. It’s a burger joint that we have been before. No changes whatsoever in the 3 Years since our last visit. Consistency is the key. They did a remarkable thing though, they now have a mini burger on the menu. I mean , only in name. But it is exactly a smaller more easily eaten version. One of the top burgers I’ve ever had , always difficult to say that to anyone, but ! Kathy missed the donuts this morning, they open at 7 and close when they have run out. We were too late. Picked up yogurt , fruit and a croissant at a local grocery outlet, went to the square and enjoyed. Walked down to the ... read more

Up early , Hostel coffee and really nice oranges, then a short walk to a lineup for $5 donuts, no not a 1/2 dozen but $5 each. Kate had Maple bacon and I had PBJ , peanut butter and jelly. It was substantial in size and fresh but WTH $5! Went to the square where they were setting up gourmet eating tents. Sunny morning , not a cloud , beautiful blue sky. The ambient temperature only 60f but the sun was creating the warmth that my body has been missing We ate our treats then strolled the district looking for adventure. The Hostel had transport set up to take us to LaJolla but we choose City Transit, we are awesome at that now., not even engaging in other passengers dialogue. No really , it’s all good, ... read more

My eyes popped open with ease, unlike the usual mundane “I need to pry them open and drag myself out of bed” kind of start to my day. There’s this feeling I get inside every time I fly. It’s excitement and it’s nerve wracking tied together with amazement and wonder. I’d like to give a shout out to my mom and grandparents for my love of travel. I spent my childhood summers flying from Florida to Pittsburgh ushered through the Atlanta airport by kind stewardesses dressed in polished uniforms, a funny hat, that now resembles what the employees of in n out wear, tied neatly was a fancy scarf around her neck that I dreamed of wearing when I grew up. And so my fascination began.... It’s now 4:00 am and Rio and I have to ... read more

The last time the girls were together was then they were around 3 yrs old. My how they've grown and changed into beautiful young women. In essence its almost as if we don't know Skye, but in our hearts we do. Us moms, Lois and I have had the recent privilege of reconnecting after a 16 year hiatus. We don't look back on the whys of a friendship gone astray, we look forward to all the endeavors we are now able to share. Lois found me on my last blog when I went to NYC this past summer so you can now officially classify me as a true blog believer. Recently I said, "when life gives you a second chance at a friendship gone astray, you take it!" And then....you go to Hawaii with your daughters ... read more

Having taken a portion of the Coast Starlight from Seattle to the Bay Area, I decided to try starting in San Diego, and ending in Seattle. I flew down to San Diego to catch the Pacific Surfliner to Los Angeles Union Station. It leaves at the ungodly hour of 6am. But at least I got to spend the better part of a day in San Diego. At Union Station, we board the Coast Starlight at 10:10am. The scheduled time of arrival in Seattle is Thursday evening at 8:12pm at the King Street Amtrak Station. From there, I will spend a night in Seattle, along with most of Friday before heading home on a dinner hour flight back to Fresno. Hardly an express, the Coast Starlight makes 17 stops in California alone, including Santa Barbara, San Luis ... read more

I’ll never forget the first time I dipped my toes in the Pacific Ocean. It was dawn, at Cannon Beach, Oregon. We had gotten to our hotel very late the night before, and hadn’t seen the beach yet. We woke early and walked down to the nearby bakery to grab a cup of coffee and some pastries. We sat on some driftwood and watched the fog move over the sand. It was chilly, but our hands were wrapped around warm paper cups and we were gloriously happy I slipped off my moccasin and put my big toe right in the ice cold sand, wet from the waves. We had only been on the west coast 24 hours but I was already loving it. This was the second weeklong road trip we’d taken since getting married in ... read more

How many times have you been to San Diego, often called America's city? I once had an office down here, in Mission Valley, back in the 70s. But I really never had much time to explore the area, as I do now. Back in the day, we took the kids to Sea World and the world famous San Diego Zoo. And I have made numerous golfing trips down here to famous Torrey Pines. My youngest sister lived here and graduated from San Diego State back in the 70s. And my other sister raised her family here during their boys' high school days. But now, we visit during the summer, when the Giants are in town. Though our Giants are tanking, San Diego still retains its charm for us. First, the weather is great! Second, we have ... read more

Fiesta Island earns its name come July with a two-weekend party and competitive bat-and-ball game at the 64th Over the Line Tournament (July 8-9, 15-16), hosted by the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club. This game has a truly unique set of rules with teams of three, wooden softball bats and no bases, just lines drawn in the sand. This is the beach scene you’ve always imagined — a party island in Mission Bay where everyone gets together for two weekends of fun. And it’s easy to attend with free admission, a bike valet and free shuttles. To participate, sign up in person on May 6 at the Beachcomber and Pennant bars in South Mission Beach or online starting May 8. Follow @ombac on Twitter for updates.
