Sadly we left San Francisco behind, heading over the Golden Gate one last time and off to Redwood National Park. The road quickly became winding and long, passing through large scarce areas and small towns. We ended up stopping in one of these small towns, Mendocino, which Todd told us it is most famous for some episodes of Murder, She Wrote. Although I have barely seen the show, as I look on at the town on the main road we pass up and down on looking for a spot to stop, I could picture it all. I was thankful for the stop, as the journey was over 6 hours long in all, and though I didn’t actually mind long drives, this one was a little too much. We parked up by a small field, and it ... read more

Today, I head for California, one of the most mythic places in the country, if not the world. The state has always represented miraculous opportunity, from the gold rush of the 1850s to the movie industry of the 1920s to internet entrepreneurs of today. The list of superlatives is long; the one I love is that the state GDP ranks among the ten largest COUNTRIES of the world. This is one big state. Smith River Canyon From southern Oregon, there are two main ways into California. The first is the drive along I 5, which I saw three days ago after rafting (see ). The other is US 199 which my guidebook describes as narrow, twisty, and difficult. The description is accurate. The highway starts in the Rou... read more

On Friday we woke up to a splendid sunny morning and (once again) slowwwwwly got ourselves motivated and out the door. The fun was cleaning up a soiled and damp motel room from our previous nights camping, aka soaked tents, muddy shoes and general gear disarray. We were out the door with a spare 30 minutes before required check out time. Heading into Tillamook, Oregon, the sun was hidden behind the clouds typical of the NW, grey and cloudy but, come on, it's the NW coast. Cheese factory visits to both Blue Heron (a glorified but enjoyable gift shop) and Tillamook were enjoyed. Tillamook offered free icecream at the entry so I(Jamey) was simply blown away, the factory was plugging along and the free samples of cheese where worth the 5 minute wait, most amazing was ... read more

The Avenue of The Giants...and they weren't kidding!! Words can not describe this experience...so enjoy the pics..... Ok, I can't help myself...it was amazing! These trees make a person feel like a speck of dust in a sandstorm! It was an experience I will never forget, the forest air was slightly sweet and earthy, here and there a ray of sunlight pierced through the heavy canopy and lit up the ground where baby giants are making a start in the race for life. The bark is surprisingly soft and feels a little moist and hollow (noticed this as I was on a little tree hugging expedition), it's amazing to think just how strong these trees are, they do not grow deep roots but instead grow support branches that keep them balanced. (just a little sideline fact..) ... read more

California Redwoods When we started planning this trip many months ago, George would always mention he wanted to see the redwood trees. If I was telling someone some of the things we planned to see or do on the trip and didn’t mention the redwoods, he’d chime in “and see the redwoods in northern California.” Over the course of time he made an impression on me that this was more important to him than I originally understood. I knew we were to visit a few different groves and I have to admit I originally thought “seen one seen them all.” I am so happy we were able to visit these ancient ones and see them in various settings and weather. We have visited them in the rain, the fog and finally the sun. I am happy ... read more

November 15 – 19, 2010 Heading back to Oregon. Monday morning Dwain stopped by a Goodyear Tire store to have them check all the trailer tires and to buy a new spare for the trailer. All the other tires looked okay, so we decided to continue our travels with the new spare, “just in case”!! We hit I-5 north again in Sacramento, CA, and drove up the freeway north to Redding. The only thing of note along the way was how dry the country was. There were many large signs announcing that Congress was to blame for turning California into a Dust Bowl!! Apparently they have passed some kind of legislation that is limiting access to water and in this part of the country, irrigation is the life of the farm. We stopped overnight in a ... read more

We have arrived in Redwood NP on Saturday, June 26th. We will go out sightseeing today so you will have to wait until next post for the pictures. All the campsites in the lower half of the park were full so we are in a private campground Kamp Klamath between the upper and lower park. We left Sequoia and traveled to Yosemite and spent the night just outside the park at Bass Lake. Yosemite was great, the falls, streams and Half Dome. We went biking up to Half Dome, ate lunch by the stream and picked up some of the gold looking flakes in the stream. Carol is the keeper of the gold and we are going to try and trade them for some gas. On June 25th we traveled across California thru San Francisco and ... read more
