A great big hello from sunny California! We have just spent our first full day here in the US, arriving in Los Angeles after what can only be described as one extremely LONG flight! A multitude of movies, games, TV shows and music could in no way stave off the obvious fact that your butt was spending the majority of 14 hours in one confined seat. And to top it all off, you somehow also had the fantastic intention of getting some kind of sleep in pretty much an upright position surrounded by strangers suspended thousands of feet above the earth! So without stating the obvious, we arrived in LA safe and sound..... So in amongst the blur that became our day of setting foot on American soil we; filled in 4 hours at the airport, ... read more

Our day started very lazily and we made it down to breakfast by around 9.30am. There's just something about sitting in a hotel breakfast area sipping coffee that makes the soul smile. We decided to head off from the hotel in search of the infamous Walmart and after a few minor driving direction adjustments (the curse or sweet salvation that is the GPS!) we found ourselves at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw shopping mall..... quite simply three levels of shopping awesomeness! Our first American shopping experience almost had to start with one of the famous icons and fluking a mall that had three of them in one, made my day indeed. Just amazing on so many levels; size, pricing, variety, the list goes on. We spent until late afternoon wandering the aisles of the US shopping giants ... read more

Another fantastic day in sunny California. We are still adapting to US time, traffic and my sense of direction is upside down which is killing me. We are both awake between 3 and 5am, around 9-11pm at home, which is around the time we would normally go to bed. It then takes that time to get back to sleep. Other than that no real jet lag as such just some sleep deprivation from the flight over. Today we took the roofless double decker bus tour around LA/Hollywood/Santa Monica. For $40 you get to hop on/off as often as you like and commentary the whole way. We were able to get a shot of the Hollywood sign among our photos today. Vicki got to see Rodeo Drive, Melrose Avenue and Beverley Drive among the many famous streets ... read more

We started today with a really nice buffet breakfast at our hotel. Waffles, bacon, eggs, cereal etc (not in that order). Caught a cab out to Universal Studios travelling via the beautiful Hollywood Hills and the magnificent homes there. Another fantastic taxi driver, the ones we have had have been extremely knowledgable and excellent drivers to boot. First stop at Universal Studios was saving the world from Cyberdine Systems (Terminator 2), 3D cinema at it's absolute best. After saving the world from attack we were meandering along the streets of the studios and you just never know who you might bump in to. Karen (Vicki's sister), Brian (her husband), Emerson and Jackson (our nephews), Jason (Vicki's brother) and his friends Dennis and Michelle. After some lunch we took the studio tour. With our front of line ... read more

Vicki and I arrived at 10:20 local time this morning. We had a great flight with Virgin Australia, fantastic staff both ground and flight crew were so friendly. Greeted with a smile at all times, Sir Richard would be proud. Exit row seats are definitely worth the extra cost and the fact one of the few vacant seats on the aircraft was next to me was even better. Thanks to some noisy neighbours sleep was not that easy, there must be a bogan convention on as the group near us was definitely fitted in that category with such classic comments "must be your shout for another gin and tonic". Having said that the four babies on the flight were really good, a few tears at different times but other than that all good. Also great to ... read more

Just a little over two weeks until I leave Los Angeles. I have about 3 things to look forward to before I go. I have two concerts that I am going to, and a goodbye party. After I leave LA, I am going to go visit friends in San Francisco on the way up to Oregon. I'm really looking forward to that as well. In some ways it is starting to sink in that this is all really happening (i.e. in my current apartment there is nothing left except my things), but in others I don't think it's completely there that I'm really going to be leaving and going to Korea. Any time that you move there is so much to be done, but when you are moving out of a city, or even a state ... read more

After considering and reconsidering my options and how exactly this will work, I decided to do it. I decided to leave Los Angeles for possibly up to a year and travel to Seoul, South Korea to stay with some friends, learn some Korean, and hopefully see a couple other countries in Asia, and maybe even Australia. I have about one month left in LA before I head to Oregon to spend time with family (stopping in San Francisco on the way up), before heading to Korea in mid September. I have no idea how things will go and what will happen when I decide to come back, but I am optimistic in the fact that this isn't the first time that I have left home to go live in another country, on another continent for a ... read more

With only one more day in LA at this time we needed to find a cheap place for lunch and dinner so we headed off to Culver City shopping mall. Again using public transport we found our way there and wandered the area doing a little shopping. Not much else to report really but we did find a cheap place for lunch. Deciding against going back for dinner we dined at the hotel restaurant which to be frank was less than satisfactory. Excited, as tomorrow we were off to the cruise it was off to bed early.... read more
