It is Day 42 of California’s “shelter in place” order, and while these accommodations are pretty good, I’m getting tired of staying here. Chez Kaj – 3 1/2 stars Location – 5 stars Chez Kaj is in a residential gated community, and in normal times, the location can’t be beat. The state beach (now closed) is about a mile away, there is a little shopping center across the street with a grocery store, and several little restaurants, many of which are closed due to Covid-19 . There is a train station within walking distance, though I wouldn’t want to walk it with luggage, and Amtrak is operating with a reduced schedule. Cleanliness – 3 ½ stars While the bathroom is clean and there are always clean sheets and clean towels, sometimes the dinner dishes ... read more

On Friday, our first full day in Southern California on this trip, we drove down from Anaheim to San Diego County to see Mission San Luis Rey. Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was founded on June 13, 1798 as the 18th of the California missions. It is known as The King of the Missions". The May Gray morning coastal fog was present most of the drive along the San Diego Freeway (I-5). I turned off at the freeway at Las Flores View Point scenic overlook for a view of the Pacific coastline. It afforded a nice view up the coast as far as San Onofre. A colony of squirrels, apparently a famous one, lives here. They and the seagulls are quite used to people. Then some excitement! The surrounding land and beachfront is part of ... read more

My good friend John K organized a sendoff at the Mother Earth Brew Pub in Vista. After we all sampled our favorite brew we migrated across the street to Belching Beaver for dinner. I feel blessed that so many of my riding pals showed up for a few last stories before I leave. A good time that I will cherish for the next three months as I make my way across this vast Nation.... read more

Theme parks aren't for everyone, but I think they can be a lot of fun. Our kids are both really into LEGOs, so when my parents wanted to go to California, I suggested we go to LEGOLAND. This experience is probably something Andrew and I couldn't have done on our own, at least not at this point in our lives. For the kids' current interest, it was just perfect for them, and so I felt fortunate we could go. It really was everything we could have wanted. The kids were super excited when we arrived, and the first thing we did was see a LEGO man posing for pictures. Oliver was interested in all of the LEGO sculptures (you know, he's a master builder because he can build things without instructions!). The lines weren't bad at ... read more

When people ask me why I travel, I often say it’s because of my Viking blood. Turns out I may have been closer to the truth than I realized. A couple of months ago I’m on a first date with a perfectly nice man; let’s call him John Doe. We are in a coffee shop (OK, it’s Starbucks, but I like their espresso) in Carlsbad, California. He is nice looking, smart, financially secure, and age-appropriate for me. And single. We had taken a few classes together, but didn’t know each other well. Since he didn’t look like an axe murderer or a serial killer (and did I mention he was single?) I readily agreed when he asked me for coffee. This particular coffee shop is right under the flight path of the Palomar-McClellan Airport in Carlsbad. ... read more

Last time I wrote about my second trip to the Grand Canyon. Since then I haven't had the opportunity to go on any trips, at least not outside of my county. I have, however, had a very eventful month! Back in August I made several big changes to my life in California. Not all of these turned out to be good choices, but I have learned some important lessons. For starters, I learned that a job in the scuba department of a retail store, is still a job in a retail store. The hours are long, the work is boring, the customers are grumpy, and management treats you like a faceless number. After a few short weeks I felt like I had grasped the bulk of available knowledge and that my growth was at its peak. ... read more

As always, it has been too long. Which in this case is a good thing, as it means I've been busy! It has now been exactly three months since I arrived in California, so let me catch you up to speed... I moved in, furnished my room, had a job interview at SEA LIFE, joined a gym, landed a seasonal job at SEA LIFE, decided to learn Spanish, started working, started working out, started to hang out with people from work outside of work, got bumped up to a part-time (read: permanent) position at SEA LIFE, started running again, continued practicing my Spanish, planned lots of social gatherings with co-workers, and most recently, applied for and landed an educator position at SEA LIFE. Basically my days are spent alternating between work, exercise, beer, and sleep- and ... read more

We were all up by 7 am drinking lattes by the fireplace. Ken made oatmeal for everyone. We sat around discussing what to do today-another gorgeous day. I found a place to visit-The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch-(50 acres of color in bloom on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean. For over sixty years, the rolling hills of Carlsbad have been a spectacular and coordinated display of natural color and beauty. The nearly fifty acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers that make up The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are in a full bloom for approximately six to eight weeks each year - from early March through early May - literally bringing the famous fields back to life. This annual burst of color, which has become part of the area's local heritage, is also one of ... read more

Greetings from Carlsbad, California!! It's no longer a secret- my newest adventure is within the US (crazy, I know). I moved in with my friend from Rollins, Bri, and her fiancé Trevor. Oh, and their cat, Ted. I made the decision to move out here after I visited in November; not only is the weather generally some of the best in the country year round, but also living 2 blocks from the ocean provides plenty of opportunities from Marine Biology work. I already miss family and friends back home, but my gypsy soul needs a new horizon. I am toying with the idea of starting a "career", or at the very least gaining some useful experience to bulk up my resume. So let me back up and tell you about my epic journey through 18 states, ... read more

Doch heute morgen gab es wenigstens richtiges Geschirr ... read more
