No, not time for a George Orwellesque insightful assessment of first world living in a capitalistic material possession obsessed 21st century. We went to Legoland. California. As opposed to Legoland anywhere else in the world if there was any misunderstanding. An opportunity for children to play in a place they related to from their daily interaction with their everyday educational toys...might sell that to Lego! The children were harried and harassed, pushed and prodded, cajoled and cursed at to get them to the car by 0845 hours stat because by any of the dieties you elect as your personal preference, life style choice or faith inspired belief - Sandy was going to have us there for 0900 hrs, at the gate for 'opening time' all of which we had carefully planned through the magic of the ... read more

Saturday arrived and was day two for us here in Carlsbad. The plan was, weather permitting that we would go to the Safari Park which is near here and now one of the San Diego regions leading tourist attractions. Weather was permitting, in fact was superb, but we got all ready to head out, went to leave...and then realised we really didn't want to. Kids were more interested in swimming in the pool, Reubs wanted to play tennis here and they both just wanted to 'hang out' for the day. So we did just that with the exception of an outing later in the evening for several hours at the outlet mall to knock off the bulk of the clothes and shoes shopping we had planned. And that pretty much sums up Saturday... Sunday, we were ... read more

...if you got the title...'your old'. The 'hit' song 'LA International Airport' was first recorded in 1970 and shame on us, it actually went to No.1 in New Zealand. But first, woke up in Vancouver on Thursday to another beautiful BC day. Packed up and checked out and stored our bags downstairs at Time Squares Apartments and ordered a taxi for 12.45 for the trip to the airport. As to Times Squares Apartments, with the exception of the noisey air conditioning unit it was centrally located and very comfortable in a fairly active part of town a mere two blocks from Stanley Park. The staff are very friendly, but who isnt in Canada it seems, and very helpful. Located on Robson Street, this is very much an artery into the central city and easy to access. ... read more

Shitting our selves was a complete understatement as we picked up the hire car and successfully negotiated our way south on the Santa Ana Freeway South in peak hour traffic. I always get a sense of what is north and south whenever I am in a strange place and when I was navigating to the freeway entry it felt so wrong as it was going against what my sense of what south was. I kept thinking if we make one wrong turn or accidentally end up going on an off ramp then we are totally screwed as we were too tight to pay for a GPS. I only had a 20 year old basic old map of the entire cities showing only major highways, and google print outs of more detailed images of only the places ... read more

Being the parent of an eleven-year-old boy that loves LEGOs and a travel writer, it was inevitable that I was going to eventually end up in LEGOLAND. So in October since we were going to be in Southern California anyway, we hopped on a Grayline Bus Tour and headed south to Carlsbad from Anaheim. LEGOLAND in California is actually a 3-part theme park. They have the main park with the rides and LEGO activities; there is an aquarium and then also a water park. As we only had a limited amount of time, we spent our whole time in the main part of the park. I was warned beforehand by friends that had visited in the past that the park's rides were geared more to the 10 and under crowd. This is very much what we ... read more

We got good news a couple of weeks ago. We will be camp ground hosts in March and April 2010, at San Elijo State Beach about 40 miles north of San Diego and 15 miles south of Carlsbad. It is in the little community of Cardif By The Sea. About 6 months ago I decided to look for a camp ground host job for this winter. For those who don't know what a camp ground host is, the host is a volunteer who gets free camping with full hookups for a period and in return must work about 30 hours per week helping, collecting money and trash, checking out campers and many other not very strenuous activities. We will work 3 days a week and every other weekend. There are 4 campground hosts at this park, ... read more

We're leaving tonight! We are mostly packed, minus a few last minute things. It's hard to feel completely ready when you know that you might have missed something. Oh well! They have Targets in Australia, right? We'll post more when we get there!... read more

Now that Megan is off school, she has more time to worry about whether or not we are ready for this trip. We are currently formalizing plans, but not too many! We want some of it to be random. That's part of the fun of traveling. What to take? Three weeks is hard to plan for. Do we take three weeks of clothes, or maybe do laundry on the trip. Then again, doing laundry isn't exactly a vacation, is it? We may complain about dragging several suitcases around. Only 16 days left! ... read more

DAY 15 Friday, January 2, 2009 MISSION BEACH and LEGOLAND Bobafett didn’t find us out with the trash nor did we get ticketed or kicked out at 2am. Thank You, Dear Jesus, for keeping us safe! We took a leisurely morning stroll on the beach and combed for precious shells and rocks. Kai was quite a hunter - 306 pieces of treasure! And everyone loved chasing waves. We had a family pow-wow and voted to hit Legoland one more time with our free tickets. It was another fun day but chilly and very overcast. J. and Geoff took a cool robotics class and we got a picture on the Dragon roller coaster for Uncle Cliff. We toured a mini lego factory and raced fire engines and put out fires - J. and I came from behind ... read more
