Although the weather has been fantastic for the whole time, it's been gone-severe clear and in the 70's, the nights have been pretty chilly. Sunday night the low was in the mid 30's. So I figured I would hang around until the temperature warmed up a bit. Easy to do when you're comfortable, drinking coffee and eating sausage rolls. Jim had a conference call for work, but he decided to ride with me for a ways when it was time to go. We rode back to the Rogers airport. As I was riding there, following Jim, I was thinking how great it would be to just keep on riding with him. It would be great to be able to just head west with no particular destination or time frame. Maybe we'll be able to do that ... read more

After we arrived at Jim's house and I said my hellos to his wife Sherry and my nephew, Josh, we headed into town to check out the fest. The main part of the rally is on Dickson Street. Fayetteville is a college town. This is the home of the University of Arkansas, the Razorbacks. Dickson Street has lots of bars. Just what every college town needs. The place was rocking and rolling with hundreds of motorcycles parked along the street and thousands of people walking around. A lot of the bars had bands playing and you could hear them as you walked along. We checked out a couple of the motorcycle vendors on the street, of which there were beaucoup. We then headed down to the beer tent where the main stage was located. There were ... read more

(My apologies to Jim H. I should have called you about ths trip a long time ago, but I wasn't too sure if I would go here until I got back from Europe and I thought that would have been too short of notice.) I knew that if I took all two lane roads on this leg to Fayetteville, Arkansas, it would take me forever to get there so I took Interstate 44 for about 175 miles to Springfield, Missouri. At least Interstate 44 is pretty scenic with hills and curves. After getting off the interstate I would have about 175 more miles of riding two-lane highways through the Ozarks. Once again the weather was wonderful and the riding was a lot of fun. As I was riding the curves and hills of the Ozarks, I ... read more

As I was laying out the route from Russellville AR to the Winn-Creek RV Park and Retreat in Winslow AR, I found there was no uncomplicated way to make the journey without backtracking to Fort Smith. Obviously, revisiting those visual stimuli was not my itinerary of choice. Since I would be pulling the Pilgrim, I wanted the route to be a reasonably direct path over fairly well marked, (hopefully) scenic roads. My concern was that a short segment of the route I wanted to take was shown as unimproved where it crossed the White Rock Wildlife Management Area. Chatting with a local who grew up in northwest Arkansas and still made trips there quite regularly, I found that my desired route was indeed gravel but was well-graded and easy to negotiate - unlike many of the ... read more

Fayetteville, home of the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, has become one of the top destinations for bikers, who rally at the Bikes, Blues and BBQ festival. The 2008 event attracted over 300,000 people and 100,000 bikes, and attendance has grown every year. This yearly celebration is fun for the bikers and the families watching from the sidewalks as the spectacle of thousands of chromed bikes with tons of attitude roll by! A great attraction for bikers to this festival is enjoying the spectacular fall color of the surrounding forests as they follow the many meandering highways of the Ozark Mountains. Since the event is usually held in September, the festival bikers are generally met with cooler autumn weather that makes for a great outdoor event. The headquarters for this jamboree is centered on Fayetteville’s Dickson Street. ... read more

The waters have started to flood under my feet, granting me the buoyancy to continue down stream on this adventure across America. I would like to recap those events which have created a beautiful picture for my memory: along with the deck building (cheers Jeff, Wendy, & family), Homers (the favorite local restaurant), watching Keith dance his rump-off to live gospel-folk-blues, chatting with crazies, chatting with friendlies, meeting people who play Irish Folk (cheers Scott), meeting those who volunteer for community gardens (cheers Damian), and others who have made this a place...a place I will call 'Home' To Gale, Keven, Brenda, Audra, Alex, Mike, Karen, Taylor, Sarah, Gloria, Wood, & Keith; Thank You from the bottom of my heart. Your presence will never be forgotten. I hope to meet you in my future life, perhaps I ... read more

The journey back to CIMBA was officially the worst time I have have ever had traveling. My flight was to leave NWA Regional Airport at 6am on Jan. 2, 2009. But before that: I had had a sore throat the for a few days and had now developed a cough with crud (yes, that's the technical term). As usual, Mom had asked me to go to the doctor the day before, but I didn't want to. But thinking that I didn't want to be responsible for spreading strep to all of Europe, maybe I should go to the doctor. I went to MediServe and saw the doctor. The doctor and I talked a lot of Italy and he told me he enjoyed having and "intelligent conversation for once." Thankfully, I didn't have strep, or was contagious, ... read more

This week has been a lot of studying mixed with cleaning and packing. The GMAT is this saturday and I would like to be out of the apartment in a week. A new skill I learned this week is to ship luggage. I sent a large 55lb piece of luggage out with LuggageFree. It was full of bedding and ski clothes. They will drop it off at my dorm. Let's just say I'm paying to not have to lug that thing around, in and out of taxis and gondolas, in a tiny hotel room and in tiny elevators... yikes. It was expensive, but worth it. The going-away/birthday party is planned and going to be totally fun. We're going to have cheese, wine, lemoncello, spaghetti, lasagna, cake, and ghelatto. We got my itinerary finalized and hotels booked. ... read more

This week has been a full week. I got 2 cavities filled, which of course is always fun. But, before I go away for a year, I'd like to make sure my teeth a healthy. I can check that off my list. My VISA came in the mail today. No not a credit card. My little piece of paper that says I'm allowed to be in Italy for the 330 days. Which is kinda neat. It's a sticker inside my passport and some paperwork. Also, talked to the insurance company about getting a year's worth of prescriptions. WE ALL KNOW THIS WAS FRUSTRATING! I was transferred 3 times and given only a fax number for the department the i needed to talk to, finally to be told they can only authorize me to take "3 months" ... read more

I have 5 weeks to go and the frustration with everthing and everyone has reached its peak. I have a massive to-do list and have purchased hundreds of dollars in things "i need" for the trip. Things live voltage adapters, financial calculator, easy-travel clothing, slash-proof purse, and so on. I'm going to break!!! (make sure it's not on you) And all the red tape from school is getting ridiculous!!!! It literally took Mom and I and entire day to get out my VISA application. 10 forms, 3 of which needed to be notarized, a picture, my original passport, and a pint of blood later, we finally got it sent off. Also, I got 2 vaccines last week, that was an ordeal in and of itself. I went down to Vian, Ok, in order to keep all ... read more
