Rode from Kingman to Williams Arizona via route 66. Stopped for breakfast at one of the classic tourist route 66 joints. See photos. Uneventful journey over wide open plains. Passed a group of Eagle rider tours and felt pleased we hadn't gone down that road, a little too organised. Arrived early afternoon with the idea of getting a little more organised on the electronic front - no joy. Williams is too small a town with little to offer on that front. Topped up with a few provisions for our camping trip to the Grand Canyon tomorrow. We've booked for two nights there. Met up with a guy travelling from Vancouver, been on the road for 5 months. He had a load of leads, and he kindly copied all our photos and then emailed them to us ... read more

Today started a little later than previous days at 7.30am in a motel in Mexican Hat on the San Juan River. It lies just outside the Navajo Tribe reservation and is run by members of their tribe. After breakfast we set off for Monument Valley about half an hour away. On the approach to the valley we were momentarily struck by the familiarity of the landscape from its many appearafilms in several films. The long straight road into the monuments is the road Forrest Gump ended his run in the film and there is a sign post to mark this. We got to Monument Valley and went to the visitor centre where we observed some of the most stunning rock formations we have ever seen. We took photos at the view point and we went into ... read more

Last weekend, our neighbors had a visitor from New Zealand, so they wanted to take him on a camping trip up north. Since I'm hiking the Grand Canyon this weekend (oh how I can't wait to share the pics with you guys), we opted out of touring the Grand Canyon with them. Instead, Joe, Kaylene and I took a hike on Sycamore Falls trail in Williams. The state of Arizona never ceases to amaze me. Williams is near Flagstaff and only a two-hour drive from where I live, but it's a whole other world. It's cold at night and green and, well, awesomely beautiful. If I decided to stay in Arizona (after I do my international teaching stint), it will have to be somewhere up north. I love the desert too, but the heat is wearing ... read more

4/14/2012 - 29 degrees with wind chill of 12 degrees. Later around 1pm wind chill was 18. Now at 3:30 the temp is 30 degrees. Well last night at around 12:30 or so it began to snow. The weathermen were right this time in predicting 1 to 5 inches. I woke Aleta up around 12:45am and all outside was white and really coming down. Jack/Barbara's water hose froze during the night. Since neither Jack/Barbara nor Aleta/myself were going anywhere today; Aleta cooked breakfast for all - - egg and sausage english muffins. We then just sat around, caught up on the blog, watched the snow. We attempted to go out for a walk in the snow, but was snowing to hard for Aleta and we came back in. At times it is really comes down. Planned ... read more

Even though the forecast had been for snow, I didnt expect to wakeup to 5 inches. It was also freezing. We madeour way to the train station at 8.30am to collect our tickets for the train we had booked to The Grand Canyon (to save Zoe from driving). The tickets cost $70 each. We boarded the train at 9.15am and set off at 9.30am for the teo hour, 15 minute journey through the snowy Arizona wilderness. Facts I learned from our Passenger Service Attendant (Kathy) on the train... - Williams is 6,700 feet above sea level and gets 85-145 inches of snow a year. - It is a 1950's town and is the starting point of the Grand Canyon Railway - It is on route 66 and is 65 miles from the Grand Canyon. - The ... read more

It was about an hour and a half's drive from Vegas to the Hoover Dam. The weather has changed here and it is really overcast and due to rain. A few facts. The Hoover Dam straddles the Nevadaa/Arizona border and is 762 ft high, although it didnt look that high from the bridge we viewed it from. It was impressive though and is set within Lake Mead National Park, which is beautiful. It is odd to be wearing coats, gloves and scarves such a short distance from Vegas, where we were hot in shorts and vest tops... After the Dam, we drove on through Arizona, (the landscape is now rocky) which made a change from flat, open desert. We made a stop in Kingman at a truckers diner for a coffee, to stretch out legs and ... read more

4/12/2012 - 60 degrees Left Vegas this morning enroute to Williams, AZ with a stop off at Hoover Dam. Hoover Dam was having some construction, but still got some good views. New bridge open which allows bypass of the high grade and curvy old road which was routed over Hoover Dam. You can still drive across Hoover Dam, but after reaching a view point high above, the old road is closed. Made it into Williams, AZ and had supper at Jack's of sausage & shrimp gumbo.... read more

This morning, we packed up and drove to Canyon Ranch to pick up Lori, our 4th Wanderlust Tour member, who is joining us for the rest of the trip. She is ready and fired up to continue the adventurous journey. We drove North of Phoenix, stopped in beautiful Sedona, walked around, took pictures, watched the sunset and had dinner. We continued to Flagstaff on Rte 89A, and it was a bit hairy driving through the mountain in the dark. At times, the speed limit was down to 15 mph. The next morning, we took the Grand Canyon Railway destined for the Southridge Grand Canyon. A 2 ¼ hours train ride with great entertainment on the way. What a SPECTACULAR view we indulged in. It’s one of the seven natural wonders of the world and a MUST ... read more

So after my bad nights Sleep in Rico I was not in the greatest of Moods this morning :( However the drive to Williams fixed that nicely. It was astonishing how quickly you go from amazing Green Lush of the Rockies into stark Desert of New Mexico and Arizona. When I stopped at 4 corners it was around 11:00 am. This is one of those places you have to stop at. Four US states come together here in one place. The only such instance in the US. The four states are Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. And then Just as suddenly I was back in Green Mountains. I got somewhat lost in Flagstaff, The damn GPS insisted I turn Right but they have redone the interchange and there was no way of going right. Flagstaff ... read more
