4/14/2012 - 29 degrees with wind chill of 12 degrees. Later around 1pm wind chill was 18. Now at 3:30 the temp is 30 degrees. Well last night at around 12:30 or so it began to snow. The weathermen were right this time in predicting 1 to 5 inches. I woke Aleta up around 12:45am and all outside was white and really coming down. Jack/Barbara's water hose froze during the night. Since neither Jack/Barbara nor Aleta/myself were going anywhere today; Aleta cooked breakfast for all - - egg and sausage english muffins. We then just sat around, caught up on the blog, watched the snow. We attempted to go out for a walk in the snow, but was snowing to hard for Aleta and we came back in. At times it is really comes down. Planned ... read more

Even though the forecast had been for snow, I didnt expect to wakeup to 5 inches. It was also freezing. We madeour way to the train station at 8.30am to collect our tickets for the train we had booked to The Grand Canyon (to save Zoe from driving). The tickets cost $70 each. We boarded the train at 9.15am and set off at 9.30am for the teo hour, 15 minute journey through the snowy Arizona wilderness. Facts I learned from our Passenger Service Attendant (Kathy) on the train... - Williams is 6,700 feet above sea level and gets 85-145 inches of snow a year. - It is a 1950's town and is the starting point of the Grand Canyon Railway - It is on route 66 and is 65 miles from the Grand Canyon. - The ... read more

It was about an hour and a half's drive from Vegas to the Hoover Dam. The weather has changed here and it is really overcast and due to rain. A few facts. The Hoover Dam straddles the Nevadaa/Arizona border and is 762 ft high, although it didnt look that high from the bridge we viewed it from. It was impressive though and is set within Lake Mead National Park, which is beautiful. It is odd to be wearing coats, gloves and scarves such a short distance from Vegas, where we were hot in shorts and vest tops... After the Dam, we drove on through Arizona, (the landscape is now rocky) which made a change from flat, open desert. We made a stop in Kingman at a truckers diner for a coffee, to stretch out legs and ... read more

4/12/2012 - 60 degrees Left Vegas this morning enroute to Williams, AZ with a stop off at Hoover Dam. Hoover Dam was having some construction, but still got some good views. New bridge open which allows bypass of the high grade and curvy old road which was routed over Hoover Dam. You can still drive across Hoover Dam, but after reaching a view point high above, the old road is closed. Made it into Williams, AZ and had supper at Jack's of sausage & shrimp gumbo.... read more

This morning, we packed up and drove to Canyon Ranch to pick up Lori, our 4th Wanderlust Tour member, who is joining us for the rest of the trip. She is ready and fired up to continue the adventurous journey. We drove North of Phoenix, stopped in beautiful Sedona, walked around, took pictures, watched the sunset and had dinner. We continued to Flagstaff on Rte 89A, and it was a bit hairy driving through the mountain in the dark. At times, the speed limit was down to 15 mph. The next morning, we took the Grand Canyon Railway destined for the Southridge Grand Canyon. A 2 ¼ hours train ride with great entertainment on the way. What a SPECTACULAR view we indulged in. It’s one of the seven natural wonders of the world and a MUST ... read more

So after my bad nights Sleep in Rico I was not in the greatest of Moods this morning :( However the drive to Williams fixed that nicely. It was astonishing how quickly you go from amazing Green Lush of the Rockies into stark Desert of New Mexico and Arizona. When I stopped at 4 corners it was around 11:00 am. This is one of those places you have to stop at. Four US states come together here in one place. The only such instance in the US. The four states are Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. And then Just as suddenly I was back in Green Mountains. I got somewhat lost in Flagstaff, The damn GPS insisted I turn Right but they have redone the interchange and there was no way of going right. Flagstaff ... read more

Today we went to the Grand Canyon, south rim.. it was amazing. It was a little more commercialized then we expected, but all in all it was fantastic. The colors and majesty is awsome. We went in the morning, the weather kind of turned to cloudy so the colores were a little less vibrant. Then we drove back to Williams and had lunch and decided to drive to Sedona. We are soooo glad we did. It is beautiful there. On the way we took the scenic route and it was so worth it. We drove down this canyon that overshadowed Grand Canyon by alot. So much color and mystic.....we spent the afternoon looking at galleries, and just looking. Bought a few things and enjoyed the whole day. ... read more

Never did we think we would be sitting having lunch on the famous Route 66. Williams,AZ is a cool little town. It is called the Gateway to the Grand Canyon. We arrived early today, so it was nice to set up "home sweet home" and then go an explore. We went downton, which is all shops and historic buildings. Williams is the last town in America that got overshadowed by the Hwy I-40. We enjoyed just poking around the shops. It was nice to just enjoy the day, as we have been going everyday. Tomorrow we will get up early and head to the Canyon. We want to get there for the early morning shadows for pictures. Hope you are enjoying the daily entries and the pictures. Until next time.......... read more

Jumped on the bike and hit the road before 8am this morning. Didn't have to look too hard to find route 66 as we were already on it! Route 66 (or Steinbecks 'mother road') is a wonderfully historic road although only parts of it now actually exist. Most sections have been swallowed up by the interstate 40. And some parts just lead you to a dead end! This used to be America's main street, where people would travel from east to west in search of warmer climbs, hope and opportunity. The newer freeway, albeit much more practical has rung the death knell for the neon cafes, resturants, gift shops and motels that used to line this road. Even the gas stations rarely pump gas any more! A few of these have, however, survived, such as Roys ... read more

A little juggling of schedules today: we need to get our laundry done, could look around Williams, could do a wildlife park drive, and could return the Grand canyon so Joseph can get his badge. After a nice complimentary breakfast complete with waffle makers (Donkey's voice from 'Shrek' pops in "I'm makin' waffles!"), Ky goes to the laundromat while I post postcards in town with the boys. We have a look in a souvenir shop where Joseph and I find more geodes $6 each, and a small piece of petrified wood for $3 (Ky later says that's enough rocks!). Williams looks pretty awesome with all the murals and arty-crafty places so Ky stays back to look around town while I take the boys back to the Grand Canyon. We are aiming for an 11am Ranger talk ... read more
