“PUNGLE UP” Brazen Bill Brazelton was a fearsome looking devil, which stood in well for him as an Arizona stagecoach robber. On July 31, 1878 he decided to have a go at the Florence stage near Point of the Mountain outside of Tucson. He stopped the stage single-handed, ordered the driver to throw down the Wells Fargo box and mail bags, then ordered the passengers out and made them “pungle up” their billfolds and valuables. It was not a term commonly used around Tucson but those passengers quickly got his meaning and handed over booty amounting to $37. The newspaperman, John Clum, was a passenger on that stage and remarked that it wasn’t much of a take and that the robber would probably try again pretty soon. Sure enough, on August 14 ... read more

Hi all, Not too much to tell, but I do have a few pictures to show you. On Wednesday last, we went to the 'Desert Museum' in Tucson. There was a chill in the air and a very brisk (cold) breeze. We arrived early and there were only a few cars in the parking lot. We went in (and I guess) due to the lack of visitors at that time, we had a personal guide for about the first hour. We learned a lot. The animals are outdoors in their natural habitats and some were reluctant to come out in the cold. Hope you enjoy the pics! Merry Christmas! Tomorrow I will be baking pumpkin/spice muffins and making pasta salad for our neighbors Christmas Eve party....and Tuesday, we will have Christmas dinner in the clubhouse, it ... read more

Hi everyone, We have pretty much settled into our life here at the RV park. Fridays and Saturdays we are out 'yard saleing'. Sundays maybe a short drive. Mondays: coffee and donuts and a quick meeting at the clubhouse and laundry & housecleaning day. Tuesdays, Wed. & Thurs., drives around town and/or visits to a casino and/or a sight seeing trip. Today, they announced at the meeting, that they would be decorating Rudy (the RV park 'mascot'), a very LARGE wooden giraffe located in the common courtyard (pic enclosed). Anyway, when I walked by (with the laundry) they were decorating him....I looked out an hour later and they had removed all the decorations and were puting a sealer on the wood. Apparently, after they decorated they decided they needed to seal the cracks in the wood....so ... read more

We've been members of the local aviation museum for several years. One of the benefits of membership is the annual membership trip. Generally the trips have an aviation theme, but do include some activities for the non-aviation travelers. This year the trip was to the Tuscon AZ area, and after looking at the planned itinerary Connie decided to sit this one out. So in September she dropped Pat off at the airport and started on a driving trip to see the kids. Pat jumped on a Southwest flight with about 30 museum members and headed west. After an uneventful trip we got settled into our home for the week, the La Posada Lodge. While the rooms were decorated in early cowboy, they were big and comfortable. Since we came from the east, everybody was awake before ... read more

Hello all, We are settling into the rhythm of life in our RV park. I really like it here. It is fairly small as far as RV parks go but the space for our RV is double what you would normally get at most any other RV park. Plenty of room to spread out. It is really quiet and very low key. They do not have an activities 'director' and not a lot of scheduled activities. Monday morning is coffee & donuts & weekly update in the clubhouse at 9 am. Tuesday morning, if you wish, meet at the clubhouse for a hike through the desert. Wednesday a 'caravan' trip somewhere. Thursday & Friday, I don't even remember. Saturday night is a bonfire in the back of the clubhouse and Sunday is a 'free' day, which ... read more

Hi everyone.......hope you have all had a great summer season. Jim and I have decided to head west for our winter season. We love the Southwest (well, I love the Southwest - he 'likes' it, he is always telling me that only women 'love' stuff like that). We left CT on 11/26/12 (wanted to leave on the 25th, but the weather wasn't co-operating), and arrived to our first destination of Tucson, Az on 12/1. Our plans are to spend the month of December in Tucson, Az, the month of January in Quartzsite, Az, Februrary, well, we are not quite sure, but March, back to Tucson, Az. Somewhere in there, we hope to sqeeze in one or two daytrips into Mexico and 4-5 days to Las Vegas. To my Facebook friends: since you have 'followed' us along ... read more

JOHN PAGE John Hempstead Page landed in Arizona in the spring of 1857. He was among a party of Henry Crabb’s Filibusters. The filibusters were California gun thugs who were promised land in Mexico if they agreed to back Pesquiera’s bid for the governorship of Sonora. As it turned out Pesquiera rose to power without having need for his imported gunmen. When Crabb and his army arrived in Caborca to meet Pesquiera they were all murdered. It was good fortune for the group that John had joined that they were a couple of weeks behind those gala festivities. The Crabb Massacre stuck in their craw, and the surviving filibusters took pleasure, when drunk, in abusing and intimidating any Mexican they saw. One day in 1858 they rode through the Sonoita Valley spreading terror wherever Mexicans were ... read more

CAPTAIN SHERROD HUNTER Fort Sumter, an Army outpost in Charleston Bay, was fired upon with artillery and pounded into submission by patriots of the Confederacy just two months after the Army started the Cochise War in Arizona. The War of Northern Aggression was underway and every soldier was needed to fight it back east. The Army soon abandoned Arizona and left the citizens to fend for themselves against the rampaging Apaches. When the Army left it also had a major economic impact on the area. Many settlers made their living by supplying the needs of the Army. When the Army left some of the outstanding contracts had not been paid. They simply skipped out on their obligations. When the Civil War broke out Butterfield lost its subsidy, and the stage coach route ... read more

BIG SYCAMORE On February 10, 1871 Eskiminzin’s mixed band of Yavapai and Pinal Apaches perhaps 400 to 500 strong had grown weary of being chased by the soldiers during the Cochise War. At his direction a group of five old women, that were apparently considered to be dispensable, were sent as emissaries for peace to the soldier fort at Camp Grant near the confluence of Arivaipa Creek and the San Pedro River about 70 miles north of Tucson. The commanding officer, First Lieutenant Royal Whitman, offered them protection as prisoners of war, extended to them rations of beef and flour, and requested further instructions from General Stoneman’s headquarters at Drum Barracks in California. In the meantime the Apaches were set to work cutting and stacking hay and cutting and thrashin... read more
