An earlyish start in Santa Fe included enjoying a continental breakfast (bagels and coffee) at the Silver Saddle Motel. We then took a sidetrip up to a jewelry designers studio in the hills surriunding the city. She specialised in turning tiny model people and animals into various pieces. Ellie is now the proud owner of some earings bearing swimmers being chased by a shark! In a garage on the outskirts of Santa Fe we found a "gas" station (petrol station) which amongst it's selection of groceries had hard cider (normal cider really, but americans seem to think cider is apple juice, if you want alcoholic cider you have to look for the hard stuff) as well as locally brewed Santa Fe pale ale. Then followed several hours of driving through hills, mountains and desert, through Albequerque, ... read more

After our big day yesterday we started a bit later this morning not venturing down to breakfast until 9.00am. Once we did head off it was east into town to photograph the giant muffler-man cowboy at John's Used Cars at the corner of Coal and 5th Streets!! As we left Gallup we zigzagged to the north and south of Interstate 40 as we made our way through Defiance and Manuelito where the road climbs and clings to the sheer side of Devil's Cliff. As we rounded the cliff where boulders balanced precariously above us (with just a mesh fence to hold back any potential rockslide) we were treated to a grand panorama towards Arizona that took in Route 66, the railroad and the dry bed of the Rio Puerco squeezed between the rugged mesas. After the ... read more

Pulled out of Williams headed east to just east of Holbrook at Sun Valley. Snow is everywhere still. Called Kylie, the granddaughter; to wish her a happy birthday. Stopped by Meteor Crater, temp is 59 degrees and sunny at the Crater. The Crater is 3/4 mile across and 700 ft deep. Big enough that 24 football games could be held in the bottom and 2 million spectators could still fit in the Crater. Continued to the Root (their spelling not mine) 66 RV Park - Yuck!! Not very good for big rigs, the front end of the rig is out in the road. They only had like 2 or 3 full hookups and we could fit in none of them. We have water and electricity. Just a place to spend the night at $16.30 a night. ... read more

Geo: 34.9017, -110.16You may notice my blogs are somewhat late, this is mainly due to poor Internet connections and priority on planning the next days activities, however I will try to catch up.This morning we leave Santa Fe and head towards the Ancient Acoma Pueblo known as Sky City. We bypass Albuquerque and the Rio Grand and exit towards the Sky City mesa, its a beautiful drive with rock formations and great scenery. We catch a shuttle and drive to the top of a huge rock formation lined with adobe houses, said to be the oldest continually inhabited city in the USA. This mesa-top village has no power or water and this is how the inhabitants want it to stay. The only sign of modern conveniences are lots of porta loo's perched on the edge of ... read more

July 13, 2010 Left Albuq. At about 8:30 this morning . Stopped at Rio Puerco Bridge which was on original 66. We crossed Pueblo Land where we encountered Owl Rock and Dead Man’s Curve. Then on to Budville which has the Budville Trading Post and the Villa de Cubera Trading Post where Hemmingway wrote part of “The Old Man and the Sea”. San Fidel had St. Joseph’s Chapel. As we crossed the Acoma Reservation we were not allowed to take pictures, so nothing to report. We were also told “DO NOT TRESPASS” Grants, NM has a lot of old Neon and Prewett is pretty much just a sign and the building that is home to the Swap Meet 66. Then 66 began to parallel a long row of pink-tinged cliffs and hills on the way to ... read more
