Cruise West Alaska Tour - 24/07/08 to 16/08/08 On the flight from San Francisco to Ketchikan we changed flights, saw Vancouver Island and had a good view of the Rockies. Beth got good photos of the snow covered peaks, but we do not know what their names are or if Mt. St. Helen is one of them). Kechekan Our Westmark Cape Lodge room gave an excellent view of the harbour. We did not take any optional activities but took the cable car to go down to Creek Street. These shops, built along the Ketchikan Creek (in Australia we would call it a river), are the most photographed part of the town. One of them was the brothel run by Thelma Dolly Copeland. We visited a fish hatchery and bald eagle display. The Ketchikan Creek was shallow ... read more

Sunday August 17, 2008 We began the second part of our adventure in Seward Alaska. Early in the morning we said our goodbyes to family and the Volendam and enjoyed a cruise into the waters of the beautiful Kenai Fjords National Park. Wildlife was abundant we saw many different sea birds, puffins, sea lions, seals, sea otters and whales. Returning to Seward we boarded our motor coach for the 3-hour trip to Anchorage that took us through the Chugach National Forest and the shores of the Turnagain Arm. Sunday August 17 - Tuesday August 19 We spent two nights in Anchorage a modern city of 270,000. The Visitors Center is a traditional log cabin with a sod roof and beautiful flowers and hanging flowerpots. You can find everything in this city a Simons Mall, Nordstrom’s, museums, ... read more

Oh Alaska, although you are separated from the rest of your country by our dear Canada - there can be no mistake - this is America! The main difference for us between driving on the Yukon parts of the highway or the Alaskan parts were the bullet holes in all the road signs. Seriously sometimes you couldn't even read the signs because they were so full of bullet holes. And when we say all the road signs, I think it is safe to say, Every Single Sign. Wow. We arrived at Nancy's Cabin around 11am. She was waiting for us, along with the 6 or so Tibetan Mastiffs that live in her neighbour's yard. Beautiful, huge, scary dogs - apparently they were bread to be guard dogs of Tibetan villages and they were definitely defending Susan's ... read more

Friday August 15, Glacier Bay & Saturday August 16, College Fjord The last two days of our cruise north were spent appreciating the beauty of coastal of Alaska. Friday afternoon the sun finally returned after five days of rain and we could see the mountains in the light instead of the grey foggy haze that has followed us so far. The natural splendor that you see as you cruise this rugged terrain is so vast you are unable to capture it through the lens of a camera. A cruise ship is absolutely the ideal format to enjoy coastal Alaska. The first night of the cruise we were very fortunate to join the thermal suite, part of the spa, on the ship, it’s located forward on the Lido deck just below the bridge and provides incredible views. ... read more

Greetings from Fairbanks: With all that went wrong before, everything has gone right so far. We have had a day of history and walking around Fairbanks. Shirley is doing well with the arm and Mike and I almost got to play golf. The weather has been about 70, but about 7:30 each evening it has rained and the temps have fallen. The flight here went very well, except for the fact that we were on planes for 8 hours. We left home at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday and arrived here at 9 p.m. EST. (5 pm Alaskan time) So as I type it is 10 p.m. here and 2 a.m. at home. We leave for Denali Park in the morning and are hoping for a site of Mt. McKinley. The trip from here on should get ... read more

Following on from the Alaska Interior we can categorically state that the weather has got no better. It has been raining pretty much constantly since we got here. Valdez was enshrouded in clouds and therefore the spectacular scenery of snowcapped mountains was not seen. From here we took a ferry on the marine highway to Whittier which again was on a rainy day with no views. Bugger!!. We did however had one day of perfect weather when we took a fjord / glacier / whale watch in Seward. This was spectacular as we were in a small boat that could get close up the the wall of the North West Glacier. Hearing the crack of ice as it moves is great. We also saw ice falls into the surrounding sea. We had our first encounter with ... read more

In Search of the Midnight Sun - Chapter 6 The Kenai August 12, 2008 - Prince of Wales Sound We headed south out of Anchorage about 8 AM intending to drive to the Kenai River area. Larry usually checks the weather in the morning and he said it is supposed to be a nice day - somewhat overcast and about 60F but that the rest of the week said 60% chance of showers. So, as navigator, I knew Whittier was only 60 miles away and that’s where we planned to do a glacier cruise on our way back out of the penninsula. So we decided, let’s do the cruise today. It’s great to be versatile. I had a brochure in the truck (I have a mini library on the dash in front of me) and phoned ... read more
