We got up very early again at about 5.30am when I realised that we were right next to the coast. A pilot boat was guiding the ship to the Ketchikan pier. Ketchikan. Heather got up quickly and didn't see a little boat going past, she flashed at them as she was topless... Lol (like im ever gonna see them ) We got up immediatly and went out to take some pictures and manage a sunrise picture and video of the boat coming into. There were 2 coast guards boats following us with matchine guns... Two boats were already there and one was following behind us. There can be upto 7 cruise ships docking at one time. We then had some breakfast and made our way to the pier to meet up with the tour operators that ... read more

Pictures are not available, sorry. In all my years of travel around the world and living to study in the United States. The worst of the worst chinese food you can find is in Alaska Anchorage. Granted I did not try those at Seward at the Kenai Peninsula, but it could not be compared to those I have tried in Massachusetts, New York, Washington DC or San Fransisco. This restaurant is located at 810th East 6th street. Rice Bowl. However, if you come to Alaska, the best local food is the Silver King Salmon, which you can find almost anywhere and the Alaskan King Crab are the foods that you should look out for. More Blogs will be up by the end of the week, when I get the chance to transfer pictures from my camera ... read more

We woke up early again after a quiet night sailing the inside passage up to Ketchian the rest of the day we spent lounging around the ship. There was alot to see on the ship activities planned for all sorts, even there was a talk about the dolphins and whales we were likely to see on our trip. There was a lot of Bingo planned and we saw the older people queuing outside the theatre lol. The highlight of their day. Alison spent a few hours asleep, still jetlagged. See picure of her "asleep". We went went for lunch in the Palms Springs Restaurant on deck 11. There are different kinds of cuisine, in buffet style. There was Asian, Italian, Mexican, Hot Dogs, Burgers, Fries, Salads and loads more. Too much to choose from. In the ... read more

After our trip to Utah to see some of its national parks a few years ago, I asked my mom where else she wanted to go. She told me she'd like to see Denali. This year she turned 79, a good year to make the trek. We flew to Anchorage and spent the night there before catching the morning train to Denali. A great muskox, mounted but not behind glass, greeted us in the hotel lobby at Anchorage. His fur was coarse on the outer coat but deliciously soft underneath. I thought of qiviut and decided I wouldn't return to the "outside" without some for knitting. The Alaska Railroad has lovely scenery, passable food with a chef on board, and is a relaxing way to get used to the thrill of being up there. It is ... read more

I am find myself wanting to leave for Peru now. Perhaps I want to escape the frustration of life, of relationships (or lack there of) and disappointments that seem to occur in every day life. If I could leave today I would. If I could pack up everything in my 12x12 dry cabin, throw half of it away, give away a quarter, then keep the rest wishing I had the guts to throw that away too, I would. If I could buy my plane ticket for today instead of for five weeks from now when Fairbanks is cold and starting to grate on me even more than it already is, I would. If I could leave without putting myself through the pain of feeling like I don’t belong, that people are not what I thought they ... read more

My planned afternoon of repacking and organizing documents turned into a four hour motorcycle ride out to a place called Murphy Dome. The ride out to Murphy Dome doesn’t take four hours unless a person (or in our case, persons) drives from North Pole and back with frequent stops and off-roading. I imagined spending my time cleaning my little cabin, studying, and living in a quiet and simple manner for the last few weeks until I leave for Peru. However, thanks to adventurous friends, this was not the case, at least for the first two days. It all began when I was sitting on Jason’s only piece of furniture left in the living room, an ornamental carpet of red and black. He was trying to sell his house and had sold or given away most of ... read more

Boats and Bears After leaving Pat and Ian for their week of luxury on a cruise ship we went back to looking for the cheap places to sleep. One reason for being in Alaska was to get so see bears up-close. Having looked around for trips even before we left the UK we knew it could be as expensive as $700 per person for a day trip. Well we had heard of a cheap operator in Soldotna called Talon Air that didn’t go to the National Parks and was therefore tons cheaper. It turned out to be worth every single penny and hundreds more. We pulled up at the office of Talon Air was effectively just a small house by the lake with the float plane parked on the lake. We got in the float-plane quite ... read more

Back on the road after fun times in Denali. What to expect from Fairbanks! We were steeped in anticipation! It had been just a few months over a decade since my last visit to Fairbanks and my recollections of it were that it was somewhat anti-climactic. We arrived in the mid morning, and boy was I right. Basically Fairbanks is like Middletown in Alaska. The car was in need of an oil change, being a solid 4000 miles overdue, and there were a few food items we needed so we began our search for the local Wal-Mart. Every other town we have been to that has a Wally-World (including Anchorage) does not make it difficult to find. With no prior knowledge of a town, you can often drive through it and simply look for Wal-Mart and ... read more

Alaska -Sept 1-7, part 2 We were on the Holland America’s ship Westerdam from August 31 through Sept 7, 2008. The last day we received the ship’s log. We went a total of 2016 NM (nautical miles). Seattle to Glacier Bay National Park our average speed was 22.6 knots. From there to Juneau we went a piddling 11.7 knots. Looking at the weather reported in the log, “Overcast” for five days, “sunny” for one day, and “cloudy” for one day. Our trip was the last one of the season, and is cheaper because of the weather. During the summer you get a lot of sunny days. A few other facts: our diesel generators used 216 tons/day of fuel, the gas turbine used 90 tons/day. The ship does a lot of recycling, including cleaning gray water to ... read more

After sitting around the Croan’s house for most of the day feeling useless as they cleaned and packed their things for the new renters, I finally left on the ferry at 4:30. Unbeknownst to me, the Matanuska ferry was last of the season. The Alaska Marine Highway system usually bumps up their schedule for the summer due to the increase of travelers—mainly motor homes and campers. In the winter there are not too many visitors to Alaska, so the ferry rates are also cheaper, but the ferries also go less often. From Juneau to Haines I paid around thirty-five dollars for a four hour trip. My backpack was half-full of books and weighed close to sixty pounds. I staggered to the ticket counter and onto the Matanuska ferry like a mule about to die. Next plan, ... read more
