We took a bus all the way down from Denali to Seward. It was a full day on the bus with some scenic stops. Smokey the Bear is still an icon up here. He’s a little worn out from all the tourist photos (I got mine!) but he’s as cute as ever. We were glad to board the boat and have a nice meal. Yes of course I opted for crab legs. Our waiter came around taking desert orders, but what I really wanted was more crab legs. Riding in a bus sure builds up an appetite. I guess it’s all the lack of exercise and stale air. Anyway, my extra legs were brought with much fan fare, not just by our waiter, but also by the dining manager. I’m now the crab lady. I’m not ... read more

Seward, Alaska, 27 juin.

Thursday June 9th Drove a block to the harbor to board our boat that was piloted by a woman Captain. The tour guide was a National Park Ranger, who is a year round resident of Seward and, therefore, was quite knowledgeable of the area’s history and of the animals and wildlife of the Park. They handed us a very nice brochure and it listed the kinds of birds and animals we were likely to see. We had a GREAT time and saw this list of wild life: • Black Bear—saw 5 of them on the hills as we boated by---one was crossing a snow patch and Valerie got a good picture of him. • Mountain goat---saw and mother and her kid way up high on the rocky cliffs. • Dall’s porpoise---a whole bunch of them played ... read more

June 6th Ekdutna Lake Campground mileage at 9377 48 degrees at 10:10 and mostly cloudy Drove down to the boat ramp area to look at the lake. The campground, lake, and road are in a deep, narrow, mountain pass formed by a glacier and the river out of the lake. At the boat ramp area we noticed again, what we have seen by all other Alaskan boat ramps, a stand full of children’s life jackets under a sign that says, “kids don’t float.” Drove back to the freeway south out of Anchorage and went just a few miles before it abruptly went into a narrow two lane road and back into the typical forest environment. If you have been following our trip on a map you can see that we are heading toward the Kenai Peninsula. ... read more

Well, we managed to fit everything into our bags… that’s quite the impressive feat if you can visualize how much crap both me and Mom bought. (Not to mention 3L of alcohol… not exactly flexible with our packing there). We got off the ship quite early – at 7:30am – to make our transfer from Seward up to Anchorage, Alaska. We had booked the transfer/tour with Alaska Cruise Transfers… yeahhhhhh, our driver was awesome, but the set-up at the cruise terminal was a complete and utter joke. Without being funny. In their instructions, they stress that you cannot leave the terminal area because they will walk around with a sign for where to go. At 8am we had to be in the terminal with our bags, for departure at 8:30am. Funny, at 8:15am there was still ... read more

AUGUST 27, FRIDAY WEDNESDAY … the princess worked her magic again by creating a cloudless california day in the boreal rainforests of coastal alaska … after breakfast and showers we decided to go back down to the spit and to video the spit from one end to the other for you … we didn’t stop along the way… we were so proud of our selves … from there we drove back back up to the little rivers that run into the cook inlet … we went down to the beach once and saw a huge front end loader drive into the surf with a boat trailer and load the boat and pull the boated trailer back to shore out of the surf … he also launched a couple of boats the same way … these are ... read more

I’m writing this blog very aware that it could read like some proverbial “Christmas letter” full of bragging and pretty boring and unmemorable. Dear Friend and Reader please use your Christmas etiquette and pretend. Yesterday, we left our beautiful campsite in Homer and started every so slowly back to Seward. A new friend we met in Homer stated it was hard for her to adjust to big city life (like Homer!) since all her life, time was tied to the tides. The village she grew up in had 12 inhabitants and she was home schooled until she went to the university. We don’t wear watches and our time is tied to when we get hungry. This makes moving slowly and taking lots of pictures easy. It also confuses us when we need to hurry and get ... read more

Shelby finally went to the emergency room and the doctor prescribed some antibiotics and wanted him to stay in the area for a couple of days. He and Leta wanted us to go ahead with our plans of going to Seward today, so we pulled out early for Stoney Creek RV Park just a couple of miles north of town. After getting set up we walked down to the creek, and had a couple of eagles fly around the campground. of course we left the camera in the RV. Decided to eat out tonight, and the campground suggested Thorn's Bar and Grill for the best fried halibut in the area. Turns out they were right and we all had a very nice meal. We had all the makings for smores except dry wood. It was ... read more

SATURDAY, AUGUST 21ST When my brother called and proposed this trip, he told me it was going to be the adventure of my lifetime. Well, since I feel like I’m on a new untried path, I jumped on the offer. Each day I have new and untried adventures here in Alaska, i.e. Saturday we were taking a walk around a lake and Dick reached down and picked up “something”. “Bear scat” he said. A few steps later he bent down, picked up “something” and said, “Moose scat”. Scat is obviously a technical term for “something” and I’m not into something that adventuresome. I knew I was afraid of bears but moose looked sweet and warm fuzzy until I read a poster giving the warning moose signs. It appears moose are not the brightest animal on the ... read more
