On the 26th of July we are heading north with a group of 13 like minded adventurers brought together through Rosco Pennell who runs 'Rosco's Rocky Road Adventures'. For Trevor and I, our trip is in three stages: Stage 1: Meet the rest of our group in Vancouver and collect our bikes. Once they have cleared customs we will ride north to Prudhoe Bay and loop back to Vancouver. Stage 2: From Vancouver we break away from our group and drop down into Washington State and head east towards New York, then up into Canada to visit Niagara Falls. From here we plan to head south down the east coast prior to crossing the border into Mexico. Stage 3: Meet up with four of our group and travel south; Mexico to Puerto Ushuaia taking in Guatemala, ... read more

Wake up in Deadhorse and pack bags for departure. Breakfast in the kitchen and meant to leave at 0800. Slight delay with iced up van so leave at 0840 - temp 29 F.... Pack into the van for the trip south on the Dalton highway. Regular stops for viewing wildlife - Alaskan snow geese, ptarmigan (national bird of Alaska - looks like a chicken - Snow White in winter but changes colour in summer to brown - we saw both versions), caribou, musk ox and other birds. We followed the trans Alaskan pipe line (way too much pipe line - 800 miles). Finally stopped for lunch at an old construction camp site. Snow capped mountains all around. Again the stories that Pat and driver Mike could tell us were fantastic real life stories of what they ... read more

0500 and we are up. Check out and leave 2 big bags at hotel. Taxi waiting and away we go to airport for the Arctic Ocean adventure tour (3 days with flight up and drive back) -told by front desk she had been waiting for 15 mins-didn't want to be late for our pickup.... The taxi lady loved a chat. Tipped her $5 so she was happy. Sitting inside the tour office at the airport and she re-appears with a can of Bug Off - nice. Go through our pre flight details. Bags a bit heavier than 15 pounds but no comment. 5 of us on this tour with about 15 overall on different tours that day. All bar 3 from Oz - 1 USA and 2 kiwis. Hmmmmm. Our trip has us, 2 ladies and ... read more

Dawn broke on a beautiful day after we were already awake. Once again 6:30 was sleeping in. We took our time getting cleaned up and packed. After loading the car we sat down to a nice breakfast. We snatched several oranges to take to our hosts in Wiseman. When you travel to the arctic circle from Florida you really should come bearing oranges. Sure they probably came from Argentina or some other South American country but it is the thought that counts. Heck it’s oranges in the Arctic Circle. We also scored these really great travel mugs. We saw several guests with them so Dan asked about them. He was told they are for the long term stay guests but she gave us a pair all the same for inquiring. They say “Farthest North Hampton Inn ... read more

Visited the Prudhoe Bay oilfields at the Arctic coast. After a nice walk on the "beach" and a dip in the Arctic Ocean (Beaufort Sea), we stayed overnight in Deadhorse at the oilfield's seismic workers' camp, then drove 2 days back down to Fairbanks along the Dalton Highway (800 km of dirt and gravel - nice!). By the way, plumbing facilities are scarce north of Fairbanks!... read more

To start the journey proper we headed north for 886 miles to get to the Arctic Ocean at Prudhoe Bay - a 3 day journey; Anchorage to Fairbanks, Fairbanks to Coldfoot Camp, Coldfoot to Deadhorse. Our first exciting moment happened in the car park before we had even left. Edwin took the bike off the centre stand and it immediately toppled over on top of Kevin, the group leader, taking Edwin with it so he was lying on top of the bike with his feet waving in the air unable to get up - I dont have any photographic evidence as I was too busy laughing. Still at least it meant the group set off with a smile on their faces. We travelled the first 100 miles as a group then after coffee set off at ... read more

Over the last couple days, Derek and I made it to Deadhorse and back to Fairbanks. On Monday we drive to Coldfoot. Tuesday we drive to Deadhorse, took the tour of the oil fields and to the Arctic Ocean, and drove back to Coldfoot. We didn't get back to Coldfoot until 1am. Long day, but I think we did it the right way. We left all of our stuff in Coldfood the day we went to Deadhorse, and rode without being loaded down which was nice. Parts of the drive up the Dalton highway are just beautiful. Atigun Pass is one of the highlights. Steep drop off one side of the road, and the scenery is great! Parts of the road have a solution spread out that helps keep dust down. When they put it down ... read more

We have ridden around 1,000 miles north from Anchorage to Deadhorse, Alaska, chiefly to go for a skinny dip in the Arctic Ocean. Deadhorse is the most northerly settlement of Alaska reachable by land transport. The 400 mile dirt road that runs up here only exists to service the huge Prudhoe Bay oil exploration area, and the pipeline that runs south to Valdez. On the way, we crossed into the Arctic Circle, ie into latitudes where the sun doesn't set during the summer time. We are staying in what is basically a portakabin in a giant oil terminal at the end of the world, but it's very hospitable indeed. Hairy oil workers are asking us about the bikes and the trip, and are impressed by the scale of our ride. Glad I've had my haircut, though. ... read more

Finished a couple of days ago. Feels good. Got into Deadhorse, Alaska on 26 July just before lunchtime. You can't ride or drive any further north than Deadhorse. Access to the Arctic Ocean is restricted to private commercial tours which cost 38USD to go and look at an unappealing bit of water with oilfield debris floating around in it. After over 18 months on the road I have nowhere left to push. Last few weeks of riding have had amazing weather and long long days of Arctic summer sunshine. Camped every night until Deadhorse before checking into the Prudhoe Bay Hotel. Hopefully photos will give you some idea of fantastic scenery. Purple Fireweed in bloom around Finger Mountain was particularly spectacular. Travel writers go to great lengths to describe how ugly Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay is. This is ... read more
