We spent one full week at Signal Creek Campground near Ketchican. This is a US forest campground next to Ward Lake which costs $5 per night. It is located in the Tongass National Forest, nearly 17 million acres in size and the largest National Forest in the US; and is the largest temperate rainforest in the world. There is a 1.3 mile nature walk around the Lake, which Don was able to master towards the end of the week. Several times we tried to trout fish in the lake, but did not have any luck. We could see the beautiful fish, but they just didn't want to make it into our fry pan. Blackie and the Black Bear Adventure: In June, Alaska has 21 hours of daylight. So Don and I would wake up earlier than ... read more

This afternoon we drove our car and camper onto the M/V Columbia (Alaskan Marine Highway System). Alaska has more coastline than the rest of the US combined, and more than half of its coastal cities are unreachable by road. In 1960 (just one year after statehood), Alaska voters passed a bond issue to initiate a state-owned Marine Highway System that would connect these communities. The ship can carry 931 passengers and lots of vehicles. Amenities include a dining room, a snack bar, coctail longe, theater, and a small gift shop. Many pitched a tent using duck tape on the bridge and cabin decks. Some slept on the floor or on reclining chairs. Since the journey from Bellingham, WA to Ketchican takes 38 hours, we decided to pay extra for a private two-berth cabin complete with toilet, ... read more

Alright. Two part entry in this one: yesterday and today. Yesterday - Ketchikan I did very little today - Mom had more excitement. Why so little excitement for me? The frog legs got their revenge. I woke up around 5am feeling like crap – nauseous, bloated, etc. I went to the bathroom, nothing doin’ so I went back to try and fall asleep. Mom came back from breakfast, but then went to search for some Gravol or something. Unfortunately, in doing so we went to the Medical Clinic on the boat... *sigh* She came back with a strict order from the clinic: get yo' butt down here. Damn frog legs. Tidbit info for anyone going on a cruise: if you have any symptoms of the flu... you will be quarantined, even if you're totally fine. So, ... read more

Today was another cold and wet day in Alaska. But it was also my last day there so I braved the cold and headed out off the ship. I didn’t have any big plans for Ketchikan today, just wandering around. I headed down to Creek Street and roamed through the shops there. I walked to the far end of the street and discovered a path there called “Married Man’s Trail” - a reference to the fact that Creek Street was the home of Dolly’s and other brothels, so that trail had have been the way the men would sneak down to visit the ladies. From Creek Street, I wandered down some of the streets of town I hadn’t been down before. Tucked away down one, I discovered a little alley area where a wilderness group had ... read more

I love snorkeling and diving. I do it all the time when I’m working out of Southern ports. I am fascinated by the colour and life beneath the water’s surface. When we first started cruising to Alaska and I checked out the shore excursions on offer, I was surprised and excited to find out that snorkeling in Alaska was an option! I hate the cold and don’t do well with cold water, but I was willing to give it a go to be able to say I’d tried snorkeling in Alaska. It was high up on my wish list of things to do, but I couldn’t find a way to do it on my own so I had to rely on the shore ex department onboard to connect me. Guests are always first, so it just ... read more

In Ketchikan, right near where the ship docks, is the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. I’d read before that it is totally kitchy and tourist-tacky but great fun. Add in the fact that we could get treated with crew passes and my friends and I were sold. We’ve been packing our days with tours up until this point - in fact today I’d thought I was going to go on another tour but I didn’t get space at the last minute - so today we decided to go see the show. And it was goofy and it was kitchy and it was tourist-tacky but wow was it a fun show! Four guys competed in teams of two in various lumberjack events. One represented Team Canada (Dawson Creek) and one Team USA (Spruce Mills) and the audience was ... read more
