When I left Africa to move back to the US and “settle down” my biggest fear was that I would lose the adventure and my life would somehow become routine. Thanks to God that has not happened, not even close! I am so blessed to have an exciting job that keeps me out in the field learning new things and feeling like I am really meeting people and making a difference. It may be a partial desk job but the excitement I get from visiting sites more than makes up for the 8-4 computer time I put in during normal weeks. Most days I thank God for my job but when it gets really fun like yesterday when I was clutching my “sic sac” while flying through whiteout conditions to reach the remote island of St. ... read more

Welcome to the Last Frontier. That phrase used to crack me up when I lived here in 2008 but now it makes me smile. I moved to Alaska in June and spent a month here before I left to drive back down to Washington with my sister. I love Alaska, there is just something about it here that fits. Now I just need to get a job and I will be sorted! It did take me a while to get used to the continual daylight. I didn’t think it would bother me but on the gray days when there is no sun to see moving across the sky it just seems like the same gray from 3 am to 12am. Between the hours of 12am to 3am it just gets kinda dusky. I did have ... read more

Back in the USA I am back in America for the first time in about a year and a half. It was a rough flight back, I don’t believe anyone should have to be on a flight for 16 hours straight, and that was just one of my three flights! However I made it back and stayed at my parent’s house for 2 months finishing up my thesis before moving up to Alaska. It was good to be back and also very strange to be back. I had to readjust my driving a bit. I guess I got quite aggressive driving in Africa as well as accustomed to shifting with my left hand. It was great to be home and see my friends but I did spend most of my days chained to my computer working ... read more

Last Sunday was a special day for my church here in Durban. After the service Hope Church had a ministry fair to introduce more information on all of our ministries and to hopefully get more people involved. Before my research I served on the Hope Kids ministry and on the day of the Ministry Fair I went early to help them out since the person who runs that ministry is one of my close friends. I took photos of both the set up in the morning and the fair after church. I wanted to post these photos to my blog because it is hard to put into words how much this church and my Hope Church family means to me. I love them dearly and am so blessed to be able to have them in ... read more

When I used to think about a Masters degree and what that would be like to complete, I usually thought about classrooms and papers. I did not think I would be driving on 4X4 roads out into the sugar cane fields and hiking through the mud to find the women I intended to interview. Yet this is exactly what I did, and to be honest it was one of the greatest adventures I have been on yet. I think I understand how excited the early explorers must have been to find places that nobody else has yet seen. Now I’m not saying nobody has been to these places I went, but the fact is while other Masters students are in libraries trying to find research that does not yet exist on these woman, I was out ... read more

Here in South Africa 2010 does not actually mean the year we are currently in, 2010 actually means World Cup soccer madness. Living in South Africa all we have heard about for the past year is 2010, who will be playing, how do we get tickets, are we ready for 2010? Now I like soccer, while I was living in Spain we watched Barcelona or Real Madrid most days of the week, but I don’t LOVE soccer. Here in South Africa people LOVE soccer. This World Cup has great significance for Africans since it is the first time it has been played on African soil. South Africa has the chance to host this huge event and show the world what an African country is capable of. This seems to be the promotional idea, but the truth ... read more
