Our route is the scenic Taylor Highway with a stop at Chicken for coffee and fresh baked treats. That afternoon at the American Summit we enjoyed a boxed lunch and then continued to Eagle, Alaska's first city now a village of about two hundred. At four we boarded the Yukon Queen ll for a narrated 102-mile cruise up the Yukon River (highway of the North) to Dawson City, Yukon Territory. Published: June 1st 2007North America » United States » Alaska » EagleI typically get Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s off from my park duties. This past week, I was feeling the need to travel and explore. Initially my thoughts were to head South. However the weather was not being very cooperative, so I decided to head North instead. After studying the map, I chose the Taylor Hwy (SR 5) as my path of travel. Off I went, East through Tok then up 5 towards Chicken, AK. It was a nice drive through some mountainous terrain, along the way I pulled off the road and made a tasty sandwich for lunch, while Otis got to run free and explore a bit. The small town of Chicken sits near the Canadian border and has a permanent population of 9. During the summer this increases to over 50. Many tourists stop to experience the uniqueness of this tiny place. There is a saloon the size of a small bedroom and on either side of this are a restaurant and a gift shop. The woman that owns the place has been here for 15 years. A little further down is what seems a new enterprise that offers gifts, showers, RV hook-up, gold jewellery made by the proprietress, WiFi, and small snacks. No act of kindness,no matter how small is ever wasted. Alsop The lion & the mouse August 1, 2005,Monday. We left Fairbanks and stopped at the North Pole for breakfast. One guess how this town makes it money…..Yes, everything is done around the Christmas theme. I my opinion “overkill” and touristy, but Mr. Bob enjoyed himself. The drive on the Road to the End of the World, did indeed seem like the End of the World was our destination as we bounced along on a dirt road. Chicken was our first stop, population 40 or so. Once this was a thriving mining town not so now. This “town” does not have electricity, and is completely run by a generator. The miners wanted to name this tent city Ptarmigan, a chicken-like critter seen everywhere, but alas ... read more
