Can't believe where the time has gone. Seems like only yesterday that we were excited about cruising the Inside Passage and now it's over. Mel and I spent the whole time eating, brinking and being merry. The staff were great and the scenery absolutely stunning. Words can't describe how beautiful it is....neither will the photos do it justice but they'll try. Can't seem to view phots to download any. New camera so perhaps I'm not doing something right. Will get back to this soon.... read more

At school. We are welcomed so warmly that we feel like royalty. Everyone is so helpful and keen to talk, check out what we have been up to, or plan to do etc. The school day starts at 9am with bell and welcome message, which included any announcements, happenings, a cheerful hello and any reminders from Lisa or others needing to convey messages to the whole school. The pledge is recited. This week the Kindergarten class led this out… very cool. I then get to read the lunch menu, just so everyone can enjoy the accent. Lots of fun! It makes me think of reinventing our Radio Show. We wander through all the classrooms saying hello. Lisa has a great sense of humor and has made use of my pink strip as much as possible. Lots ... read more

The next couple of days in downtown Anchorage are pretty cruizie for me. Maree will write about school things later. I got the girls up on Wednesday morning after our late evening and we made the grade six breakfast. I made a date with Nurse Debbie who started to work pulling out the prickles/thornes I had colleted the previous day. I hadn't actually got stuck by the porcupine or by the quills in Kaiser but I had been in shorts and thongs when pushing bushes aside especially when coming back up the embankment. We had been going for a while when this lady/teacher came into talk to us both and suddenly she goes all woozy and collapses with our help into a chair. She is near to unconsciousness, can't feel her hands and has great ... read more

Untitled Mother's day is kinda special here in the good old US of A. So our host Lisa had stayed up late into the night preparing breakfast for her Mom who came with dad, little sister, Kellie, her husband and baby. Big tuck in Then with Lisa's two boys as well we all headed out of town to a horse show which is her Mom's favourite thing to do on Mother's day. The horse and riders were all magnificantly groomed - the girls were particularly impressed with the tightness of the jodpurs of one gentleman rider. We did not stay long as our hosts considered it too cold and windy. We then went to various observation spots to take in the great views, a Muskox farm and to finish the day we stopped at a bottle ... read more

Thursday may 10 Some people have asked us why we landed in Fairbanks as our first Alaskan stop off. To Territorians it’s a bit like going first to Katherine before Darwin. Our answer is that we wanted to get over any jet lag especially before Maree worked at the school. Really the jet lag has not been any problem. And secondly we wanted to sample/experience “Real Alaska” and it’s people before coming to the big smoke. Today we broaden our horizons. After picking up a hire car our first adventure is the change in road rules. Then it’s off to Chena Hot Springs. With ice capped mountains all around we strip off to bathers and descend into steaming hot water. It is really uncomfortably hot at first and there is a strong sulphur aroma, very ... read more

What a beautiful day! Danielle and the girls went to Earthquake Park, which commemorates the earthquake of March 27, 1964. There was a large sculpture that displayed what happened to the earth in the Anchorage area. Of course, Gabbi and Jacqui climbed all over it! Danielle, Gabbi and Jacqui picked me up from work and we went to the most climbed peak in Alaska, Flattop Mountain. The 3 mile round trip took us past lots of blueberry bushes. The picking was a little slim since it is late in the season and the trail is so well used… The sky was so clear that we had amazing views of Denali (160 miles to the north), Anchorage, Cook Inlet (with Turnagain Arm and Knik Arm) and the Chugach Mountains. We finished the day with a stop at ... read more

Ok, let's start with saying that I made it to Alaska. In our last installment, I had to get off the plane in Seattle, grab my parka, go back through security and catch my flight. So this is how it went down: By the time I actually got off the airplane and into the terminal I had 16 minutes to my next flight. I was at Gate D16 and needed to be at C18. To make this more visual, think of a "U" Shape. I was at the top right of the U and had to get to the top left, which was probably pretty close to 1 mile. No moving walkways or anything to help me out. When I got off the plane I grabbed the first customer service agent and asked if I would ... read more

Reading the Water. First I think we need to discus fish behavior. I'm writing this while waiting for the ice to go out. When the water goes out reading the water is more about reading the bottom. If you look for sand patches along the shore you'll find large fish in spawning colors. Mudler minnows are fly this time of year. As the year moves on the trout will look for water about 60 degrees. As the water temperature rises the fish will move deeper but when they go too deep the oxygen decreases so the fish will only go so deep. In most of Alaska's lakes the limit is about fifteen feet. In shallow water you have bugs, leaches, freshwater shrimp, minnows, and all food. The larger fish become pray for eagles, loons, and other ... read more

I discovered lake Lucille last summer. I have caught more fish over 20 inches long than you would believe. I found the fish in this lake because we were going to set of fireworks for the fourth. In Alaska it's not dark until about 2 am. I decided to fish while we wait. I caught a couple of fish about 18 inches long. Then I saw about ten inches of the side of a fish above the water as it rolled over my floating line. This fish has been my favorite lake ever since.... read more

Here are some shots of the Iditarod Race this morning. Today's start is merely ceremonial and is done downtown. As a matter of fact it hasn't snowed here in a while so they had to bring in snow to cover the streets for the ceremonial start. The re-start (actual race start) takes place tomorrow just outside of town but today's what gets people excited. I've put in a trail map so you can how far they have to go...tough breed. I've also included a low-res video (click on filmstrip on the left 'Racing Underway") of a musher starting off for Nome. All of the mushers and their sled dogs come down here. The whole thing takes a couple of hours so we got some pictures around town. It's only -3 today so we were outside for ... read more
