Beer Can Lake: The lake temperature is 36 degrees. The sun is shinning. We started fishing with Mudler Minnows, a favorite fly of mine for this time of year. I was having trouble catching the fish. They were hitting frequently but not getting caught. I tried a smaller Mudler Minnow with no change. I didn't have a smaller Mudler Minnow so I used a Hare's Ear Nymph. I thought the color was a good match and the look was similar. I started catching fish at will. Float Experience ... read more

May 13 Today We spent the morning at the Rabbit Creek Rifle Range. On weekends they open the skeet range. We had been looking forward to this since learning it was available. Maria has zero experience with shotguns, and this is a good place to start. We chose the 20 gauge over-and-unders instead of the 12 gauge, out of consideration for our shoulders. The program calls for 25 shots and I don’t think I have ever fired a shotgun 25 times in one day. Six or eight shots on a dove hunt, or three or four shots on a quail hunt was about the max. The operating and safety briefing from the range employee were excellent. The shotguns had a little safety mechanism which automatically reset itself to safe with each opening of the breech. We ... read more

May 12 Today we decided to take our first mountain hike. For 10 days we have been watching the snow on the hills surrounding Anchorage and trying to guess when the trails up Flat Top Mountain would be clear of snow. Despite the temperatures daily in the mid-50’s, the snow not only seems slow to recede, but every couple of days there are snow storms over the peaks depositing a fresh layer. Gauging that it might be June before the snow is gone, and anxious to take our first hike with a little elevation change, we set out. At 7 p.m. This mid-afternoon departure leaves about four hours of useable daylight to make the climb up and back. There were half a dozen cars at the trailhead and about two feet of snow at the beginning ... read more

May 3 Maria and the .44 Magnum In previous years when Scott and I have hiked, camped or fished in brown bear country, we have been ill prepared to protect ourselves if a bear encounter, of which we have had several, turned nasty. In short, the bear would win and dine well. The first time I read about Timothy Treadwell and his continuing forays into the midst of grizzly congregations, I predicted that it would not be long before we read about his being killed and eaten. In Alaska, humans are near the top of the food chain, but by no means are we a match for a grizzly bear. On those previous trips, we carried bear spray, a large can of pepper spray, relying on that and luck. In preparation for this and future trips, ... read more

May 1 The picture you see here is NOT of the apartment we moved into yesterday. The apartment complex, found online and booked by phone, did not meet my expectations. It was obvious as soon as we began moving in. The idea had been to have a comfortable base prearranged for the month of May, and spend that month finding a place to live for June through September. A thorough study of the Sunday paper classifieds yesterday, a couple of phone calls today and one visit later, we moved out. Less than 20 hours were needed to go from the prospect of a month in a place we didn’t want to be to moving into a cabin on a creek at the edge of Anchorage. We are beyond happy. The picture you see here IS of ... read more

April 30 - Anchorage The year was 2000. Scott, Doug Roberts and I were driving south toward Anchorage from Glenallen. Doug and I had both bought digital cameras in the preceding year, and luckily only one of them had been stolen three weeks earlier when our vehicle was broken into at the Crescent Lake trailhead. This southward drive was the final day of our first Alaska trip, a one month long adventure. I was driving and Doug was calling out requests to stop for photo ops. Every mile. What might have been a two-hour drive was stretching to the point of making me wonder about making our flight that evening to the lower 48. The scenery on this drive is so grand that it is difficult to just drive through and enjoy it. One has to ... read more

As promised, I'll catch you all up on all the "old news" from the last six months. Most of which will, I sure, be a big bore; but I'll attach a bunch of fun pictures to make the browsing worth your time. Summer & Fall The rest of the summer after my mom visited consisted of lots of hiking, geocaching, and grilling out. There is nothing like Alaska in the summer. During this time, I completed some training and earned my "Expert Infantryman's Badge" I started my OCS packet in September after waiting the obligitory 6 months after arriving at your unit that is required by unofficial Army etiquitte. Right from the start, I hit road block after road block; but being the stubborn person that I am I trudged on. Special thanks to those of ... read more

The Aurora Borealis exploded in the skies over east Anchorage tonight, lighting up the skies over the Chugach Mountains in the most intense display I've beheld yet in my 7 months here in Alaska. I was going out to get some beer when I saw a flourescent green curtain flicker open in the sky, then another slowly burn into existence beside it. A girl walking by stopped in her tracks and gasped, turning to me, "Did you see it?" I changed directions and ran into the university lake park across the street, where there are no lights to absorb the green glow of the Auroras. When I reached the park I had to wait a couple of minutes before they became active again, but I was not disappointed. Literally like phosphorescent sea snakes did they slither ... read more

The flight into Anchorage was long, though not nearly as long as one of the girls I met here at the hostel that just flew in from Poland, but it was long enough to make the plane seem as though I was flying up in a single engine Cessna or something. I got into Anchorage a little after midnight. The hostel was closed (office hours here are from 7PM to 11PM) and so I ended up making my way over to the Motel 6 who then charged me enough for half a week's rent at the hostel, using half of my in hand cash. Stress but comfortable sleep came next as my stomach grumbled in fear that the rest of my cash will only suffice to keep it warm not fed. "We'll deal with that tomorrow ... read more
