Within 15 seconds of arriving in Playa del Carmen I was offered drugs on the street, over the years this has happened many times but I have never taken up the offer. Ok, once, many years ago at the Notting Hill carnival, but that was a special occasion and the dealer accidentally dropped another bag which I ‘accidentally’ covered with my foot, in a flash he had merged into the crowd and his inflated price became a bargain! those were the days ….. Anyway, back to Playa Del Carmen… We had 4 days here and I was offered drugs constantly, people would use an excuse of selling something to me, like a hat or a tattoo, then when in close, reel off a list of drugs that would make a chemist proud, Playa del Carmen is ... read more

Monday 7.6.2010 day 236 Woken up by our personal Concierge Today we were woken by the phone ringing at 8:40 it was our personal Concierge just wanting to know if we needed any help. We told him that we were trying to organize a trip to Belize so he looked into it and then came to our room in 20 mims with all the info. Although it was helpful we could have found the info ourselves and could have done with a bit more of a sleep in. On Monday 1 February I flew from Habana to Cancun in Mexico, being the nearest point on mainland Central America. Cancun really isn't my sort of place so I got straight out of there to Playa Del Carmen, which is a smaller resort town about an hour away. Playa is more chilled out than Cancun but still extremely touristy and pretty expensive. It is in fact pretty much the opposite end of the spectrum from Habana: very commercial, full of western goods and shops, everybody speaks english, and full of mainly American and Canadian tourists. Having said that, it was great to be able to use the high speed cheap internet and go shopping for all the things I was lacking in Cuba. I met up with German David and two other backpackers, Francois and Hagit, ... read more

However, I've never been committed to it... emotionally, it was a goal that I had sitting in front of me and it was like I was looking at it earnestly wondering if this is something I *really* want to ... read more
