At about 10:15 finally we took off after 45 minutes delay.. I was already feeling very sleepy. The Starbucks feeling had already started to wear off. Since I have nothing else to do for the next 3 hours, I have decided to learn some Spanish and read about Yucatan. I should get ready for Cancun. Once I land, I should go straight to the bus station. Catch the ADO bus to Cancun bus station and then the 2:00 clock ADO first class bus to Valladolid. We land at about 12:00 PM. The immigration was pretty much nothing. Customs? Well, while the US is trying to figure it out with dogs and people, the Mexicans has already the advanced high-tech systems in place. They have this, traffic light looking system in place.. Nachdem wir nach der anstrengenden Pyramidenbesichtigung uns nachmittags mit Hoehlenbaden in einer Cenote erholt haben, besichtigen wir noch ein bisschen Valladolid, wo es allerdings nicht viel mehr gibt als eine seltsame Wahlveranstaltung einer Lokalpartei auf dem Hauptmarktplatz. Wahlpropaganda auf mexikanisch ist schon etwas anders: es wir auf einer Buehne stundenlang gesungen (sehr schrecklich laut) und in Entenkostuemen verkleindet herumgesprungen. Die Leute (ob sie wohl zukuenftige Waehler sind?) sitzen vor der Buehne und einige hoeren gespannt dem Spektakel zu, waehrend die Kinder lieber herumrennen und schreien. Nun ja!? In cobá erwartet uns am naechsten Tag die Reste eines Hochwassers, das auch vom Wind des Huracáns ausgeloest wurde. Mit dem Flugzeug geht es von Guadalajara nach Cancún, um die Lage nach dem Orkan zu checken. Und natuerlich um moeglichst rasch in den Sueden zu kommen, von wo aus nun die Reise in Centralamerika startet. Cancún ist recht schockierend, zumindest wenn man auf der Suche nach schoenen Straenden und Natur pur ist. Es ist eine voellig neue Stadt (30Jahre) und mit haesslichen Haeusern, viel Verkehr und wenig Charme versehen. Ich weiss nicht, wie die Straende an der Zona Hotelera, einer 17km langen Hotelmeile, vor dem Orkan im November waren, jetzt sind sie mehr als haesslich. Die Hotels sind zerstoert und alles erscheint wie eine Riesenbaustelle. Der Sand wurde von Sturm wegtransportiert, so dass nun Steine ueberall hervortreten, an denen man sich beim Baden verletzten wuerde. Hi folks! The magic really does commence here it seems, and although these scanned-in photos may not represent the peak of modern-day photo technology, I hope they give you a sufficiently rounded impression of this 2-week long stay in Cancun, on the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. Since the hype surrounding holidays in Cancun had wormed its way into the darkest recesses of my mind, I somehow felt that Mexico merited a full-blown travel experience, and as the longest holiday in the context of the entire year, expectations were riding high.
