KarenMark

Hi, I'm Mark. An Ozzie currently living in England with my English girlfriend Karen. We met whilst she was on a working holiday in Perth and have been together ever since. We both have done some independent travelling in the past but this is our first trip together. Hopefully the first of many.

We arrived in Mexico City, tired and confused at 6 AM. Our first impressions were a bit on the sinister side; people wearing face masks to combat the pollution and the necessity to catch a "secure" taxi after a recent spate of violent attacks and robberies. The hotel didn't help to dispel our fears having a certain "Shining" feel about it! After a quick sleep we ventured out to explore and realised (by daylight) it was just like any other big city in the world. We walked up to the main plaza (huge pavement, giant Mexican flag), saw the cathedral (big and wonky due to it sinking back into the marshland like the rest of Mexico City), visited the wondorous house of tiles (large house with tiles on it) and the theatre (only saw the foyer- ... read more

Puerto Escondido to Oaxaca

The bus ride to Puerto Escondido was a marathon 14 hour overnighter. We were entertained on the way however, with a variety of Spanish films, a 3am breakfast stop and 3 Ricky Martin albums! We'd been looking forward to some time on the coast and we weren't disapointed. There are plenty of seperate beaches here and we managed to visit a different one every day. Zicatela beach is the main surf break and too rough for swimming, but others are calmer and good for snorkelling. The only irritation was being continually hassled by touts to go on a snorkelling trip with sea turtles. Whilst we were initially tempted, the practice of lassooing and riding the turtles to entertain the tourists put us off. We ventured out 50km further west along the coast to the beach town ... read more

This entry was written sitting on the beach sipping on a coconut! The route towards the Mexican border involved a stop over in the Guatemalan city of Quetzaltenango, or better known by its Mayan name of Xela. The place has a nice main plaza but other than that it seems your normal Guatemalan city. In all our time in Guatemala we hadn´t really had any genuine "chicken bus" experiences, so we decided to bite the bullet and catch a series of them to the border. "Chicken buses" are old American school buses jazzed up with a "pimp my ride" style paint job and a variety of fairy lights and religious disco stickers. They are, however, most famous for the amount of people, livestock and giant bundles of corn you can pack onto one bus. The first ... read more

We arrived in Antigua after dark, having caught a direct shuttle bus from Copan. The main plaza was lit with fairy lights and you could just see the outlines of the 3 volcanos looming over the city. In the light of day we were able to fully appreciate why travellers come here and bypass Guatemala City. Despite the hoards of people passing through, Antigua seems to have retained it's own cultural identity - cobblestoned streets, brightly coloured biuldings and colonial churches in various states of ruin and repair. We spents a couple of days exploring the city, wandering the streets, museums and churches. Karen's favourite museum (in truth the only one we actually went into) was one displaying the different textiles made by local indignous groups in the area. Immediately after we stumbled across an earthquake ... read more

We crossed the border into Guatemala without incident and were faced with our first collectivo ride to the village of El Remate on Lake Peten Itza. Collectivos are cheap alternatives to buses used by the locals, basically a mini van crammed full of at least 20 people or more where often the doors are left open for maximum capacity. The lake was stunningly surrounded by jungle covered mountains with white horses grazing by the lake's edge giving the place a magical feel. Accomodation is dotted around the lake with the place we had decided to stay being a 2km walk with backpacks in the midday sun. The walk was well worth it though, with the hostel providing one of the nicest dormitories you would ever want to see. Attic style thatched cabanas with a large hole ... read more

The journey to Rio Dulce was quite entertaining. The kamikazi driver had a 'no fear' approach to driving, overtaking on tight bends and racing along bumpy mountain roads. The pit stop halfway for a toilet break allowed Karen to see the locals in all their glory. Rather naively looking for the 'ladies', she walked into the communal bathrooms to find an aging cowboy, pants round ankles. With toilet doors apparently being a luxury, he maintained the friendly Guatemalan approach giving a warm 'Hola' and a cheeky smile! Upon getting off the bus in Rio Dulce we were besieged by touts offering river trips and places to stay. We decided on one that was a short boat ride into the mangrove swamps at the side of the river. In a stroke of genius we had already had ... read more

Belize city turned out to be a bit of a hell hole, and 1 night there was more than enough. It's dirty, smelly, falling apart and there is someone waiting to hustle you on every corner. The following morning we packed up and set off early for San Ignacio via Belize Zoo. Upon entering the zoo Karen was 'stoked' to discover Steve Irwin and Dolly Parton were previous visitors. We got pretty snap happy and were tempted to pretend we had taken the photos on a jungle trek as the animals were easy to view in their natural surroundings. We collected our bags from the nice lady in the gift shop and continued on our way to San Ignacio. The town turned out to be a nice surprise and we have stayed longer than expected. The ... read more

Throwing caution to the wind, we decided to cross the border into Belize and make it into Orange Walk in one go. After arriving in Chetumal, on the Mexican side of the border, trying to get a connecting bus to Belize was like an episode of "Its's a Knockout" but the obstacles weren't wearing inflaitable suits making them much harder to spot. Our first opponent was a sketchy information woman who muttered something about a bus leaving from the market place. The second opponent came in the form of a smooth talking money changer who managed to rip off a few people but we thankfully managed to side step him. For opponent 3, see opponent 2 but now in the guise of a shady bus conductor, who was willing to take ticket money from gringos without ... read more

Must apologise for the delay. We are now in Belize but will write this entry about our last few days in Mexico. We left Playa Del Carmen on Sunday morning dosed up on Diacalm heading for Vallodalid. We arrived 3 and a half hours later to a torrential downpour that even had the locals hiding. After trekking through the labaryinth of side streets we arrived at the hostel we'd been planning to stay at, only to discover it was closed. Soaked to the bone, and beyond caring, we set up camp in the hotel next door. The next morning we managed to track down the elusive hostel owner - Antonio Negro Aguillar, an ex-baseball star from the 50's and 60's who now runs a sports shop and the cheapest hostel in town, with a sideline in ... read more

Hola from Mexico. After the 2 week epic entry from Jamaica, we are trying to keep these diary entries like our bowel movements - frequent!! We have been in Mexico for 3 days in probably the most touristy region in the country. We flew into Cancun airport, but because of recent hurricaine damage there, decided to head south to Playa del Carmen. 10 years ago it was a little fishing village but now is fast becoming an extension of Cancun. Sprawling resorts and back to back souvenier shops selling sombreros and maracas. Without having left the airport we somehow found ourselves unknowingly embroiled in a timeshare hustle, not realising what we´d got ourselves into until the following day. Our accommodation for the first night proved equally as sketchy. Tired from all the travelling we found a ... read more
