So we left Mexico City by 1st class bus, the lounge was more like an airport than a bus station. Metal detectors check your luggage in and the board a bus for the 6 hour bus journey. I had been dreading this but it went very quick and was actually really comfy. We arrived in Oaxaca and after a short walk arrived at our new home Casa Angel. We have another private room which is new and very clean. The whole hostel is great. The staff are friendly and helpful. The hostel is very clean and they have a lovely free breakfast. Eggs cooked how you want, and very good price. Very near the main street. The first evening we had a quick wonder around the main street and headed to a pizza place, as we ... read more

Hello everyone, I am going to try something different. Since I have friends who do not speak or read English I am going to attempt to do the blog in both English and Spanish. I will probably be doing a lot less writing :-). Voy a trater de hacer algo diferente. Ya que tengo amigos quien no habla o lee English voy a trater de hacer el blog en ambos ingles y espanol. Probablemente voy a escribir menos. :-) I have been very busy here since I began school on the 25th of February. In the mornings I am going to school and in the afternoons on Mon., Wed. and Fri. I am volunteering in the laboratory at La Clinica del Pueblo in a part of Oaxaca called San Martin de Mexicapam and on Tues. and ... read more

Well our days of laying on the beach and drinking cocktails are over (well at least for a week). Flew to Oaxaca City from Peurto Escondido on a teeny weeny plane. Kind of like the Sounds Air ones at home. Arrived and it was pretty chilly. We are about 5000ft above sea level and first thing in the morning you feel it. And when the sun goes down at night! During the day though we are getting 32 degrees!!! I seem to have developed my sun allergy again. Seems every time I spend too much time in the sun I get what looks like sandfly bites over my arms and legs. Not sure what it is, but bloody annoying and super itchy!!! Finding not a lot of English spoken here so a bit of menu roulette ... read more

This will be my first blog entry for 2013. Already, I have done some very exciting things. I unpacked when I arrived Wednesday night. (This part was not so exciting.) Thursday morning I was tired so I slept in and made contact by e-mail with the school and the clinic. On Friday I went to the school to enroll in my classes. It was so good to see all of the staff and teachers. I decided to take a tour on Saturday with EnVia, the mico-economic organization associated with the school. We first went to a town that is new to their program. It was very isolated and very agricultural. The women there take out loans to set up businesses in order to supplement their husbands' incomes which are very low from their hard work of ... read more

So been in Oaxaca for a week now. The weather has been so much better than closer to Mexico City though its still a bit cold at night. So got here last Monday after a 4.5 hour bus ride from Puebla. Was a nice scenic trip through lots of valleys as we made our way 1000m closer to sea level...still 1500m above sea level though! In some of the valleys there were heaps of cacti taking up literally every part of earth, was a strange scene but pretty none the less. So got to the bus station and met my host mother, Sylvia, and drove back to where I would be staying. Turns out theirs another Australian staying there as well for two of the weeks I'm here which has been good, not so boring going ... read more

Last Night Sunday night, went for a walk down to one of the cash machines. The machine hummed for a few seconds, and then said transaction is compl ete.It gave me my card back, no cash, and charged me $7.47 for the transaction. I went back on Monday morning, spoke to the manager but he spoke no English. Oh well. Later that day they posted a credit to my account. I hired a driver this morning to take me to get a piece of glass cut, buy some paint brushes and 5 gallons of water. Feeling good, warm and no rain. I'm in town, on the edge of a 50,000 population metropolis. There are four towns, two touristy, one middle class, and an old colonial town a few blocks from the beach called La Crucecita, where ... read more

So here is my first blog about Mexico which does NOT contain my adventures in Mexico City! I finally managed to say goodbye to it and took a comfortable, albeit long, 6-hour bus journey to the incredible city of Oaxaca (pronounced wah-hah-kah), in the state of the same name. I arrived in the evening on the 17th November, and it did not take me long to fall in love with the place. A seemingly endless number of galleries, churches and random art exhibitions await in the city, each showing incredible works and/or architecture. However, while my first couple of mornings and afternoons were spent exploring the aforementioned cultural sights, my first couple of evenings were spent in front of the TV! I shall explain why before I am judged too harshly... The hostel which I was ... read more

After my little detour up to Tijuana, I managed to just make the ferry over to the mainland, meeting up with about eight other bikers who were slightly better organized than myself and had been waiting patiently to board the ferry for a couple hours. After straping the bike down, we headed up to the kitchen for some beers and dinner. One guy from Britain, Andy, had run into the same Tourist Visa as me, but had managed to bribe an official in Cabo with $50 rather than flying all the way back to Tijuana. He let me share his room though (I didn´t even have a seat cause I was so late for the ferry) for free, so we´re making the $500 back bit by bit. 18 hours later we arrived in Mazatlan, did a ... read more

Home Sweet Home! I love to travel but I alway's love coming home. We had a busy trip and a bad internet connection so waited to finish the blog. The trip in total was 9 days with two of them mostly travel so we really tried to cram a lot into our days without feeling like we were rushing through like crazy turists. For me it is as important when visiting a place to not only see the highlights of the area but to also get a sense of the city or area your visiting. Watching a city come awake and checking out places they are eating and just meeting people who live there. So whether your talking to a Taxi driver, waiter or someone at the hotel desk take a moment to just ask about ... read more

Day of the Dead After visiting markets and seeing all the preparations for Day of the Dead, I was ready to experience it for myself. The primary festivities kicked off on the night of October 31st, where thousands of people made their way to Xoxocotlan cemetery about five miles south of the Oaxaca city center. Day of the Dead takes place over two days. On November 1st it is said that the spirits of the children return until the evening of November 1, after which the spirits of the adults return until the afternoon of November 2nd. There are variances depending on location and many small towns celebrate after November 2nd. In the Catholic religion these two days coincide with All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2). Day of the ... read more
