It feels like Washington right now. Its both kind of nice and also chilly since I´ve already acclimated. The weather can change here as fast as it can change at home. The past few days haven´t been so bad, but its gone from almost 90° hot and sunny to heavy rain and dark clouds and/or thunder multiple times. I like it. My days have been very relaxed and lovely. If I don´t go to 8:30 yoga down the street, I can sleep in as late as I want! I miss making coffee and being at Enzos, but it sure has been a while since I´ve had this kind of schedule and Im loving it. I´ve communicated with different eco village and healthy communities with the focus being practice in yoga, meditation, natural diet, and service. Some ... read more

Hola! It's another hot one in Oaxaca. I start working in reception today. It's pretty low key and most of the guest speak English over Spanish so it shouldn't be too challenging. I'm getting coffee with a nice woman who was at the English speaking AA group that's just a few blocks away. She and everyone else there were very friendly and welcoming. It was actually an emotionally sensational experience for me that was unexpected. I didn't realize how connected it would make me feel to the community and to my group back home. As soon as we started saying the serenity prayer, I almost cried. Feeling so strongly connected to home when you are so far away, is a powerfully joyous feeling. Also, today I have 4 months totally sober! I'm very happy and proud ... read more

Well then. I have been snapchatting up a storm. Snapchatting is my substitute for interaction now haha. Not really, I've actually met some cool people at the hostel already. Most people you meet traveling are nice, which is good because the infantile stage of a big transition like this makes me sensitive and a bit weird. I find it hard to be confident while traveling sometimes. I feel very confident at home in my element, but going out and seeing many different kinds of people is very thrilling and a bit unsettling at times lol. Like I said, this is the beginning and hardest part. Uprooting and then putting yourself majorly out there is challenging. Especially because Orcas is so different and special. The character traits and behaviors that come as lovely, endearing child-like magical wonder, ... read more

Is een goeie manier ... read more

We arrived in Oaxaca on the night bus from San Cristobal, which was surprisingly comfortable and we had a reasonable amount of sleep. However, we didn't appreciate the police stop at about 6am when we all had to get off the bus and have our hand luggage searched. I'm not really sure what they were looking for as it was a rather pathetic search but maybe that was because I look so innocent. We had decided to visit Oaxaca to be there for Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). It is a holiday for remembering and honouring the dead and Mexico's most important holiday. It is a festive and joyous occasion where Mexicans invest lots of time and money in the celebrations. Oaxaca is well known for their celebrations which last several days. We ... read more

I woke up bright and early this morning to go to Monte Alban. This is one of the most important archeological findings in the entire world. Monte Alban sits on the very top of the mountains surrounding Oaxaca. The zapotecas were an indigenous people that built this city before the Spanish came. The zapotecas inhabited Monte Alban from 500BC to 800AC. Monte Alban is filled with temples and a view you only see in magazines. After Monte Alban we took a short trip to Cuilapan de Guerrero. This monastery was dedicated to an incredible man named Vicente Guerrero. He was the second president of Mexico and led a great movement to help the oppressed races of Mexico. After Cuilapan de Guerrero our coordinator Layla took us to get a traditional Oaxacan lunch. In Mexico lunch is ... read more

Hi, It has been more than a month since my last blog entry. Even the website has changed since then. Well, I drowned my camera with a bottle of water in my purse. I had to go to Sams Club to buy a new one. One good thing...it has a panoramic view (See the photos at the beginning of the blog - something new on the site). One bad thing...it does not have a museum setting. But the choices here are less, so I'm glad I was able to get a replacement camera. I will try to pick through an assortment of pictures. I hope that they bring a measure of pleasure. Please know that I put the pictures in a certain order but the website kind of jumbles them up. They are trying to get ... read more

Hello again. Condensed blog since I have to rewrite the one I wrote but lost. We arrived in Oaxaca at 8am after 14 hours through the mountains. Arriving it looked like another big city that we prob wouldnt like. We were wrong. Oaxaca which we were still having trouble pronouncing was laid back and like all places we have been to very family orientated. They also love their churches and they are on every corner. The next day we decided to get out of the city. There were heaps of places offering tours out to the Mezcal distillaries. Mezcal is kind of the brother of Tequila but from the Oaxaca area. Fun fact true Tequila bottles will never contain a worm, Mezcal will. We were told we could get a collectivo from out the front of ... read more

Hi everyone, I am still in awe of my good fortune in being here in Oaxaca and having all of the many wonderful experiences. There is truly no other place that I would rather be. I am now posting pictures of the clinic where I volunteer and the school where I study. You can then see why I considered myself fortunate. I wish you could all be here in person to experience Oaxaca.... read more

This is my second blog entry for this year. I have taken a lot of pictures so I am not sure where to begin but I will take a stab at it. I think I will begin with my second weekend here, 1/31 - 2/2. We went to the Guelaguetza show at the hotel Quinta Real. The hotel is an old ex-convent from the 17th century. The costume and dances are done by students at the Technological Institute. These are dances and costumes from the seven indigenous regions in the state of Oaxaca. The "real" Guelaguetza is held the last two Mondays of July but the Institute has begun having performances each Friday and you have the option of having an authentic Oaxacan dinner there at an additional cost. It is a truly wonderful experience. As ... read more
