Hello All, I have some beautiful pictures to share from saturday and sunday. Saturday, Envia took a group from ICO (Instituto Cultural Oaxaca) to a couple of pueblos to talk with the women to whom the school has given loans that are funded by the tour fees and donations. One city, Teotitlan de Valle, is known for its beautiful weaving of tapete (small wool carpets), bags and other woven items. We visited 3 different businesses there. The other city that we visited was a very complicated indian name that starts with a "T". There were 3 businesses also, one group of women sold fish, one group sowed very beautiful full aprons and the 3rd group had a small business that sold items of need and a few other things. It was wonderful to see how the ... read more

Hello everyone, The night before last I forgot to recharge my computer so I was not able to get on the website in order to post any entries. I think it requires a lot of energy to maintain the website. It is saturday night and I have just finished resting from a long trip with Envia to two of the surrounding pueblos. That is a whole new story with new pictures but I am going to put this entry in since I haven't been on my computer since thursday. This is the end of the week so I will start next week with pictures from the tour today.... read more

Hello everyone, I made it to the end of the week and I am ready for "descansar" (to rest). I am going to the market down the block from here to buy more fruits and vegetable. I will try to shop lighter today since I have to carry the bags home. I hope to have some pictures of the market to post shortly. I made it to the market and I am now settled back home and ready to enter photos of the market. I hope you enjoy. The rain is beginning so I did make it home in time to miss it.... read more

Hello Everyone, There was a lot of excitement here in Oaxaca today. There was a 7.8 earthquake between here (Oaxaca) and Acapulco. It occurred on the border of the state of Oaxaca and the state of Guerrero (Acapulco is located there). That location is pretty close to where we are. We had just taken pictures of our class and sat down for our communication class. I felt somthing moving but did not pay it any attention, then an office staff person came out and announced that there was an earthquake. We took our places under the door lentils and waited. Everything was shaking and those of us from outside of the country were frightened. One person from Australia and one person from England had never been in an earthquake, so they were quite shaken. There were three ... read more

Well, my feet may never be the same...I've counted about five blisters...but we had a fantastic time on the hikes. I do now know that my comfortable walking shoes are not good for hiking.... We left very early on Staurday morning, taking a taxi to the second class bus station, headed for Cuajimoloyas, and the start of the first day's hike. We arrived at 9:00, filled out a form, met our guide and chatted a bit with an English and a Dutch girl who were doing the same hike. Cuajimoloyas is at 10,000 feet (Oaxaca is already at 5000 feet) and is a pretty little village on ridge. Our first guide was only 15 and very shy, so we didn't get much information unless we asked. None of the guides speak English... The first third of ... read more

Well, I have a little time before my weaving workshop so I am going to try to add another blog entry. My first day of class was interesting. I was sent to the wrong room. They were much further ahead than the other class. The maestra gave me the choice to stay or to go to the correct room. By the time that first break started I knew that I needed to be in the other class. I am more comfortable in the correct class. I am adding more photos. Yesterday I think the system was slow and reluctant to take all of the photos that I wanted to send, so I am going to try again today. I got the names of "las aguas" in communication class today from a guy from England. There are ... read more

I arrived safely in Oaxaca Wednesday night. I have a great room at La Posada de Los Angeles with two large beds, a bathroom and cooking facilities. I spent Thursday getting everthing arranged in my room, which I hope to occupy for the next 2 1/2 months. (It seems that there was a mixup at check-in and I got a super-sized room. So far no one has asked me to move). I also went to El Instituto Cultural Oaxaca to discuss what classes I would take and the possibility of traveling to the coast to visit the towns with the Afro-Meztizos who are the descendants of the African slaves who were influenced by the spanish/indian culture.I also discussed visiting a traditional medicine clinic. On Friday I went to the bank to withdraw pesos to pay my ... read more

Thursday The real danger in Mexico during this trip is...........my teeth! The abcess seems to be going away, but last night I was eating almonds and half of one of my teeth on the other side broke off! Now I can't really chew well on either side....it might be baby food for awhile...or just Negra Modelo beers.... Yesterday we walked to the zocalo after my Spanish class, and found hordes of protesters there. The march covered three kilometers of roads! I found out that it was another teacher strike, to protest the disappearance of a teacher a few months ago and the new national yearly teacher exams. While people seem to be somewhat sympathetic, they are also exasperated by the time the kids don't have class (3 days this week) and the loss of income when ... read more
