I am now in Oaxaca again, this time for 6 months. I am doing a home stay this time in order to speak more Spanish. We speak Spanish over breakfast in the morning and during the day when we encounter one another. The owners of the home believe in healthy living so they fix very healthy breakfasts. The lady of the house goes out for runs early in the morning before leaving for her work as a teacher. The husband who is a retired architect takes care of the activities of the "Casa Particular".
I will be spending 5 months studying at the Instituto Cultura Oaxaca and volunteering at La Clinica del Pueblo in San Martin de Mexicapam, an area of the city of Oaxaca. I will be working in the laboratory, arriving at 7 am to draw the outpatients that arrive early and later to perform the tests and to put results in the computer until 3 pm when I will leave. I will be taking private lessons for 2 hours per day on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays in the school and I will work in the clinic on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Much to my surprise I was asked by the director of the clinic to serve as an interpreter between a new chemist volunteer who does not speak any Spanish and the laboratory crew that does not speak any English...how amazing for me since I will be taking the second part of my Spanish interpreting exam when I return...what great practice. Also there is another lady here in the home that has asked me to help to tutor her in Spanish grammar and semantics. It appears that I will be able to put my classroom learning in practice while practicing for my exam.
I am going to share many photos of my six month journey here in Oaxaca in hopes that you can enjoy the journey vicariously. :)
