Distance driven today: 336 miles / 541 km Cumulative distance driven: 4,452 miles / 7,165 km Today’s trip: Douglas, Arizona to Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico International border crossings: 1 Cultural attack on the senses since border crossing: lots Throughout the years, I have been privileged to travel to lots of places around the world, and subsequently, to cross quite a few borders. Border crossing is a rather interesting activity in my opinion, and the things you get to observe during a crossing can tell a lot about a country, its culture, its ethos, and generally about the similarities and differences between rules and laws on either side of the border line. I have often times been fascinated by the fact that, cultures, ethics, governing systems, and generally lifestyles, can be so different, on either side of a ... read more

A magnificent train ride up the canyon to 8081 feet. Coming from the North seems strange to be that high cooler temps ( 0) at night and no snow. The track is so steep you go no more than 30 km per hr back and forth by switch back. An incredible view thousands of feet down equal to the view of Wells Gray Park BC with different vegetation. Tarumaya Indians populate the area still living in caves. They have small communities spread over miles living very rustic. The government has built bording schools to educate the children. Many still do not go. The women dress in bright traditional clothing the men even though Indians dress in western attire, They love their music and are happy self supporting and very kind to all of us.... read more

Chihuahua had some of the most beautiful natural landscapes and a delicious cuisine. And such a rich history dating as far back as to the Spanish Intervention. We were able to see some of Chihuahua canyons and forest and caves. We were able to visit one of Chihuahua most popular caves, Nombre de Dios as well and try some of the local and traditinal cuisines. Caldo de Oso, fish soup and much more. It was different, but by far some of the best food yet. We also got the opportunity to try some outdoor activities in Chihuahua. Like exploring and discovering some of landscape. Chihuahua had so much beautiful landscape, we were surrounded by cliffs, caves, trees, plants, bodies of water and insects as well.... read more

Und dabei ... read more

Zuerst Einreise ... read more

June 4th, 2012 4AM and Fran, Maurice and Linda are up and off to the airport for their trip to Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre), in the State of Chihuahua, in the north of Mexico. Linda and Fran spoke often of doing this tour and finally, it was happening. When we stepped off the plane and onto the tarmac in Chihuahua, we were immediately struck by intense heat. Though only 8AM, it must have been over 30 degrees Celsius. We were greeted by our tour operator and driven to the the City Express Hotel some 30 minutes away. Chihuahua, the largest state in all of Mexico, has a very diverse landscape including a large desert, many different mountain ranges, very arable farm land and also significant ranching country. The state borders the US states of New ... read more

Having been accepted onto a Master’s programme beginning in September, I thought it wise to quit the English teaching/messing around and return to the UK and find some engineering work for the summer. Teaching is enjoyable, particularly the lifestyle that goes with it, but I earn much more as an engineer and soon I would have to pay for the Master’s and, more significantly, have enough money to live in the UK for a year without working. And it is far from being a cheap place to live. As you may be able to guess from the pictures, this plan didn’t exactly work out as I was offered a job at a Mexican gold mine. At first I was unsure, Chihuahua State not being the most secure part of the world. In fact, Northern Mexico holds ... read more

My mum always set great store by the entry to a house. A proper entry was vital. It needed to be welcoming and give a good impression but without necessarily letting someone you didn't know straight into your living space. Some countries could take a lesson from my mum. We crossed three borders in the last week, all different. With the UK we were leaving and, apart from the loss of our spending in their country, they didn't really seem too bothered by the fact. On entry to the UK, on the Eurostar from France some months ago, we were interviewed, skilfully but gently, by an immigration officer who established who we were, what we had been doing, intended to do and for how long. For the USA we arrived after a long flight, longer because ... read more
