The ruins at Palenque were very cool. Situated deep in the jungle, we had to fight off all sorts of crazy animals just to get into the place.... howler monkeys, giant iguanas and lots of unknown jungle beasties that scared the heebie-jeebies out of Kev. Bless him. The following day was also great - we visited three different waterfalls. The first, Misol Ha (featured in the movie Predator apparently) was huge and we discovered a hidden cave behind the waterfall which we adventured into. Inside there was another secret waterfall and lots of friendly bats. We sung the Indiana Jones theme tune when running across the rickety foot bridge in Agua Clara. Imagine the River Murray, surrounded by Jungle and banana trees but perhaps not quite so mighty. It was supposed to be a beautiful turquoise ... read more

Alright guys, apologies for being 4 weeks behind.... having way too much fun... This is what happened, since we last wrote... (we travelled from Mazunte - San Cristobal.. read on for more details) San Cristobal is a beautiful highland town with cobbled streets, markets and surrounded by nearby indigenous villages. There is hence a larger indigenous presence in the town as many come in to ply their trade. These people are very proud of their background, culture and religion and still wear their colourful traditional garb that are unique to their village - it's pretty special to see. We were fortunate to be able to visit a couple of these villages - on horseback! Our horses were carefully picked by the owner to match our personality and character; Alex´s horse was a beautiful mare with with ... read more

This part of the trip started in worst possible way, as we got to the airport in Mexico City on april 13th, with our tickets to San Cristobal booked on the internet. The clerk who spoke some english just shook her head, and said we was there on the wrong date. I had booked the tickets for the 16th instead, and not really checked it closely enough, aswell as we had done some changes on where and for how long etc before we left home. Hopefully we could be rebooked, but she wasn't very hopeful, as this day is one of the busiest days of travel, the last day before the easter celebrations. She told us to be back in 45 minutes to see if there was some spare seats. She wrote our names on the ... read more

We left Palenque on Saturday morning, the 16th, and caught the bus to take us on to San Cristobal. It again was a beautiful hot day, and the journey took around 5 hours. We checked in to the hotel, San Martin, which was close to the main square. The town is a pleasant place, there are many small streets, all cobbled, which many local run shops. The first thing to notice here is that almost every drives an old Volkswagen Beetle, I have seen a few around Central America, but they are here in abundance, and are very cool ( wouldn't mind getting one myself when I get home!! ). I did the usual orientation walk around town and got my bearings, got some food, then went out with my friends around the bars in the ... read more

The bus journey from Merida to Palenque was long. We set off at 8.30am, and arrived in Palenque at 6pm. We then got a taxi from the bus station to our lodgings, the Don Mucho cabins. The site is made up of cabins which is pretty much in the jungle. Its a really cool place, and the cabins are extremely comfortable. We checked in, and then had a meal in the restaurant, where there was a live band, and flame throwers for entertainment, and was very good. We sat and chatted to the other travellers that were there ( which there were many, its a popular place for travellers ), had a few beers and then to bed. The next day ( Friday 7th April ) there was an option to visit another local Mayan ruin, ... read more

For the second phase our trip with Tucan, we acquired a number of new people in Cancun (to replenish our total tour group to 17 people, after the 12 who had left us in Cancun). We then spent 12 days travelling down from Cancun, ending up back in Antigua, Guatemala (via central Mexico) - we arrived in Antigua just 3 weeks after we had initially left (although feels like we have been away for 3 months already!) The main activities on this 2nd phase of out trip have been... - vistiting the Mayan ruins at Chitchen Itza (Mexico). These ruins were much smaller than Tikal, but include some grand buildings - eg. the largest ball-court discovered to date (where captains of each team competed to win the 'honour' of being beheaded in sacrifice to the gods ... read more

It was sad to say good by to Puerto Escondido and if you ask Mel, she would have changed the ticket and stayed another week or two..... Just because we got eat fresh fish every day, swim at the best beaches we have ever seen, there was pure white sand and turquois water that seemed to be just the right temperture to cool you off. Talk about being unrealistic! Well it was a "quick" 12 hour bus ride through the night to get to San Cristibal Del Casas, a town up at about 2000m in the Southen Mexican highlands. the claim to fame was the town was a colonial gem and there were a few activities in the area.We travelled with Yvonne, a German girl (surfer) we had met on the beach in Escondido. We had ... read more
