Once back in Mexico City we got caught up on general housekeeping and prepared for company from Canada. Annette and Lionel arrived at 1 AM on Sunday morning, February 12th with big smiles and a backpack each. A short cab ride to the apartment and lots of visiting took place before we settled for the night. Maurice and I took the couches while our guests took our bedroom. Early next morning we were up and off to church a few blocks away. Even though the service was in Spanish we attempted to follow along and have our Spanish lesson for the day. Geo: 16.85, -93.1333Donderdag 9 februariWe zijn bijna aan het einde van onze rondreis. Vandaag nog een uitstap naar de Sumidero Canyon en dan een lange bustrip helemaal terug naar Tulum.Samen met een duo (broer en zus) uit Mexico-city rijden we om 9u naar het vertrekpunt van de boten in Chiapa de Corzo. Daar vertrekken we voor een twee uur durende boottocht door de Canyon. Er schijnt een mooi zonnetje en 23 graden, een heel verschil met de regen en 14 graden van gisteren. De gis toont ons onderweg inhammetjes in de canyon, bijzondere rotsformaties en de fauna. Vele grote vogels en onderweg zijn we ook gestopt om krokodillen te spotten. We hebben er drie gezien. Day 36: Everything is going great. Its 9:48 am. It is a cold misty morning. The sun has not made its way out yet. It truly is beautiful here. I already went to the Mercado. I bought a beautiful tenderloin, beets, chard, huge sweet blackberries, carrots, peas and mandarins all for about 200 pesos. Try buying all these items at Whole foods. I just made breakfast for my guests. I made blackberry pancakes with ham, coffee and fresh pineapple juice. Last week I decided that I would rent two of my six bedrooms. I put up a sign and I already have two guests. They are a very nice older couple from Russia visiting for a month. It gives me something else to do. There are many options for a traveler here in San Cristobal. The pricy hotels are certainly an option if you want to lay out the cash. I went to one of the local hostels to look at options. a private room with a private bath for 450 pesos per night. Other options they offered ranged from 98 peso per nigh per person in a shared dormroom accomodation. I reccomend that you come stay a a hostel or hotel for one night then look for less expensive lodgings. I have seen furninshed private rooms with all the amenities right here in centro for much less. It's now coming up to a week since I left England for Mexico it but feels like I've been travelling for months already. The first week has required some adjustment and lot of trial and error but I slowly feel like I'm getting there and have even found myself making some half decent attempts at Spanish. After writing the first blog post on the morning of my flight I left for Heathrow and said goodbye to my family and Cat, who joined me at the airport. I hadn't slept much the night before so crashed out on the plane and then had the pleasure of five hours in Miami (three of which were spent queuing for immigration!).
