Weve made it out of Cancun for good this time. Currently it is raining. Like raining raining. Constantly. It started in the night and has been going all day so far thus we have resorted to being stuck indoors. We had plans to go for a horse ride today in the hills but thats been swamped. (Written after the fact: In total it rained for about 18 hours and went into the second night. The temparature dropped immensely taking us from mid 20s down to putting on pants and a jumper) Whilst on Holbox we made a list of all the items Jane needed in order to carry on. On recommendation from the staff at our resort we went back to Cancun on the basis that this would be the best place to obtain these items. ... read more

Thought I had better take a break from the sun and update you all a little. This is quite a large Mayan town up in the mountains. It's beautiful but with us staying pretty much right in the town centre it's extremely busy. On the very top of the hill there is a church, This is the focal point for the whole town. Today is one of the Church's major festivals. The last few days we have seen loads of people coming from other local towns offering gifts for the festival. Hundreds upon hundreds of people carrying torches up the mountain towards the church. People setting off fireworks in their hands (really!). Lots of trucks full of people beeping their horns and flashing their lights. Pretty amazing stuff to watch. Unfortunately the local people here do ... read more

Mexico Adventure September 2011 to July 2012 An introduction of the beginning: We ask ourselves how we spent so much time here in Mexico, considering we had only 1 month of pre-arranged commitment in Chiapas de Corzo which is in the state of Chiapas. Prior to leaving Australia we decided to do a TEFL course so we had something else to fall back on whilst travelling the world, so this in mind lead us to Mexico for the month of September it was bums up & heads down learning how to teach English, and hopefully receive a certificate that is world-wide recognized. This we passed!! Thanks to Joanna @ Dunham Institute in Chiapas de Corzo… A must watch video: Los Parachicos in Chiapa de Corzo (Chiapas, Mexico) - YouTube url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nj38... read more

We had a difficult time procuring a ride to Ocosingo; it took a while but finally in the late afternoon a sedan-type car with two friendly looking Mexican men pulled up and said they were going as far as 20KM before Ocosingo. We had been trying for an hour and grabbed the opportunity to get closer to our goal for the night. The men dropped us off in a Podunk town exactly two hours after we had started. We were 20KM from Ocosingo, just as they had said. With our next ride we reached the big town of Ocosingo. The driver of this small car was a young college kid from Tuxtla heading back home alone. He was yet another nice, if quiet, young man. We only had to walk a few blocks from the highway ... read more

Sunday 30/09/12 – We woke up really early in preparation for a long day of riding, packed up all our gear and tried to start the bikes. My bike started fine, but Kenz’s just kept clicking at us rather than starting. Unfortunately all the bike shops, mechanics and most other stores are shut on Sundays so we just had to unpack the bike, sit down and work it out for ourselves. The clicking noise was coming from either the starter motor or the relay, meaning the most likely problems were a flat battery, bad wiring/earth/terminals, jammed starter motor or a dodgy starter relay which are a common problem on the KLRs. I have been too unorganised to buy a multimeter so we just had to trial and error until we found a solution. We eventually worked ... read more

A short (ish) story - but not a short blog - on the Kindness of Strangers….part two… Las Guacamayas to Palenque, Mexico $1US = approximately 13 Mexican Pesos The alarm on my watch went off at 6:30 but the rooster outside my open window went off at 3, 4, 5, and 6 o’clock, and who only knows when else. This, of course, made for a fitful night’s sleep. We were waiting at the “bus stand" at the crossroads outside the village of Las Guacamayas, willing to take public transport if something came along, but preferring to hitch a ride with a passing car or truck. It was nearly 8:30 when a truck finally appeared. A people-mover-stand up-in-the-back kind of truck bound for Pico de Oro pulled up and stopped for all three of us ... read more

A short (ish) story - but not a short blog post - on the Kindness of Strangers….part one…Comitan to Las Guacamayas, Mexico $1US = approximately 13 Mexican Pesos The day finally arrived when it was time to leave for our trip around bandit country. My new friend Iliana and I decided to hitch as much as possible and stay with locals as often as we could to really get a feel for how people live in that isolated, non-touristy part of Mexico. We had no real itinerary but knew there were a couple places of interest to see along the way, including some highly rated parks and archeological sites. We caught a bus from the center of Comitan to the far edge where we began to hitch hike. Within a few minutes a bright red VW ... read more

US$1 = approx 13 Mexican Pesos August 27, 2012 Today is my birthday, and once again, I am alone. At least that’s the way the day began. I started exploring the streets of Comitan, a city in the Mexican state of Chiapas, having just arrived the evening before and eager to familiarize myself with a new area of the country. I soon found myself heading uphill on the edge of town to get a vista of the city, eventually making it up and over to the carretera, a main road leading out of town, before walking down into some unexplored residential neighborhoods, terminating near the zócalo, in the center of town. Passing by a building with an open front door and a large map of Chiapas hanging on the interior wall, I couldn’t help but go ... read more
