We spent two nights at a hotel which is basically in the jungle. The room is a wooden hut and I have had the pleasure of finding a huge spider and mouse in my room, not nice. Although the spider bugged me more than the mouse did. One of the highlights of sleeping in a wooden hut is seeing and hearing monkeys outside my room. The monkeys make a loud jaguar sound which is to do with their territory. After an 8 hour bus journey from Merida to Palenque the day before and a restless night sleep with the monkeys and creepy crawlies, we had to get up early to see the Mayan ruins of Palenque. It was great to be able to walk up and down the ruins as you’re not allowed to do this ... read more

Palenque is such a very small city. The most interesting stuff is everything around this city. The best option is to get to Vilahermosa, Tabasco airport (It is very closed to Palenque, around 2 hours and a half). I stayed in a very cute hostel (and very cheap as well). It is really worth it, the name is Yaxkin Hostel. Once I arrived to Palenque, I paid for my two trips (there are lots of travel agencies in te city or even in the hotel, they offered daily tours). My fisrt tour was Bonampak and Yaxchillan. For doing this, I really have to be awake since 5:00 am, the trip starts at 6:00 am. Bonampak and Yaxchillan are a little bit far from Palenque (around 3 hours). I really loved this trip; it is being in ... read more

I fell in love with this place. In fact, if in a moment in my life I decide to quit to everythimg, I would choose San Cristobal to spend at least 3 moths. This is a multicultural city: indigenous, mexicans, american, european. Everybody is here. You can find from the cheapest places to eat, to the most expensive. What to do: To get lost in all those small streets, going from store to store, restaurants, museums, or only spending time in downtown listening to the Marimba music. Marimba is an special and typical music in Chiapas. Around San Cristóbal, you cand find Zincantan and San Juan Chamula. Very small indiginous communities, with particular religious traditions: kind of mix between catholicism and maya. Quite interesting. (It is forbidden to take pictures inside theses churches)... read more

Ola! Mexico Part 1 Somehow felt like this was the day our trip really began, California being a good entree for what lay ahead. Travelling cheap also means some personal sacrifice, up at 4.15 to go to Mexico via the local (trolley)train to the border town of San Ysidro, from there just walked across the border to Tijuana ( border control more interested in Mexicans going in to the US, not us going out)then taxi to airport. A long way to our first destination, about 5 hours flying time and 4 hours at Mexico City airport, Aeromexico were just fine. Finally arrived in Chiapas de Corzo, which is a small town near to Tuxtla Gutierrez, and the first (Chiapas state) city founded by the Spanish in 1528. Collapsed into our concrete base bed for a long ... read more

THURSDAY (1-24-13): We are up pretty early so we can walk to the central area for breakfast. We go to a place I had walked by several times. We both have eggs Mexican style - yummy. We buy another pound of coffee and return to the room for our adventure to the villages Zinacantan & San Juan Chamula. Both of these places have large indigenous populations and are relatively secluded from outdoor life. We first went to a very small village called Zinacantán the village is supported by growing flowers. You enter and can’t help but feel that you have stepped back in time. After going to the church, we had the opportunity to speak with some women who sold beautiful handwoven pieces. They showed us how a backstrap loom works, and then Teresa and I ... read more

THURSDAY (1-24-13) Ok, so here is the story, last night we decided to change of our plans. We have decided to head somewhere that is out of the mountains and closer to the coast. We loved San Cristobal, but the city sits at 6,000 feet. That translates to warm days and chilly nights. After several chilly nights (low 50s or high 40s) we decided it was time to adjust our plans. So we are not going south to Comitan. I got out the book, did some reading and figured out how to get us to the coast. So the question became, is it the northwest coast or the southern part of the coast? After some discussion, we picked Puerto Arista, this location is just about 125 miles north of Tapachula and the Guatemalan border, which is ... read more

SATURDAY (1-19-13): We arrived in to Tuxtla on time (8:00 pm) and the airport was almost empty. The 50 people on our plane were the only people in immigration. 30 minutes after arrival we had hit the ATM machine, had a pocket full of pesos and were in our taxi on our way to Chiap de Corzo. On the way, our driver told me that the city was a little bit crazy so he may not be able to get into the central area and we may have to walk a bit. I was less than excited about this idea given that it was dark, the city will be full of people partying and we have all of our stuff! When we arrive he was right, the road into the downtown area is closed and a ... read more

San Cristobal De La Casas (Mon to Thur.) San Cristobal de las Casas is one of Mexico’s oldest post-colonial cities, located 37 miles east of the state capital, Tuxtla Gutierrez, in the heart of the Chiapas highlands. Established as a settlement in 1528, this city continues to be home to an ethnically diverse population, whose cultures and arts have been preserved. The city’s main appeal lies in its diverse architecture and plazas.

We departed Palenque at the very civilised hour of 9am, embarking on a 5 hour bus trip to reach our next destination, San Christobal de las Cases. The scenary on the way was incredible, we were high up in the mountains so it was foggy with lush forest and small villages and settlements dotted around. Lots of animals too and Mexican cowboys! It looked pretty cold outside and our arrival in San Christobal confirmed this. We are told this was an unseasonable cold snap but it was colder than we liked - we even stopped and purchased hats and scarves from a street stall. We imagine they made a killing as they refused to negotiate price - why would they... buy it or go cold. Hmmm ... tough decision. The cold snap disapeared the next day ... read more
