North America » Mexico » Chiapas » Agua Azul March 3rd 2015

After much deliberation we decided to head to popular Agua Azul as a day trip on our own from Palenque. We caught the colectivo on 5a. Poniente Sur (Prof. Ydalio Huerta) for MXN35 (the better colectivo was MXN40). It took about an hour to get to the stop for the falls, then hopped a taxi for MXN20 down the road to the falls. During the taxi ride there were two toll booths where it cost MXN15 and MXN40 respectively to continue. These were manned by the local/indigenous population who the government had historically tried to kick off the land. It seems like they would have had ties to the Zapatistas, a militaristic group set to defend the indigenous populations rights and way of life. The falls themselves were beautiful with 4 different places to go swimming. ... read more

Got into Palenque this morning at 0630hrs after the over night bus. We only got woken up once by some military personnel checking passports; they didn't want us so we got through fine. We had the breakfast we bought for the bus ride and headed to our hostel, just a short walk. We spent a little time there locking up our things and researching. We decided to take the colectivo to the ruins right around 8. It wasn't hard to find the colectivos to the 'ruinas' on 3a Poniente Norte (Allende) just north of Central Poniente (Benito Juárez). For MXN20 they would get us the 7 kms to the ruins. It cost MXN30.50 to enter the national park, and an additional MXN64 to get into the ruinas themselves. There were yet again guides, but as always ... read more

Superervaring! We returned to San Cristobal on a night bus from Oaxaca. We checked back into the same hostel we previously stayed at and as our room was ready we could shower and have a sleep. We had a pretty quiet day which included going back to visit the young boys for a street food lunch of tacos and exploring the market. The next day we had organised a bike tour to the Sumidero Canyon. We cycled out of San Cristóbal and then uphill for 5km followed by a short downhill before continuing to climb for another 4km. Once we reached the top it was downhill for the next 60km. We made a stop for Grenadia (a fruit similar to passion fruit but sweeter) as they are grown in the area we were cycling through. Just before ... read more

We had a long trip from Antigua to San Cristóbal de las Casas in the Chiapas region of Mexico. We were picked up in Antigua about 4:45am and finally arrived around 6pm after having to change shuttle twice and cross the border into Mexico. San Cristóbal was a really nice city but a little colder than we were used to as it is at 2,000m above sea level. We had two days in San Cristóbal which Gary spent resting, but as it was a little difficult to provide him with delivery he managed to venture out for food. Twice we visited a local street food stand for tacos, quesadillas, and huaraches, the food was great and the guys cooking and serving it were incredibly young. The server and drinks guy was just 14 years of age ... read more

Palenque town is compact with lots of places to stay and eat and easy minibus access to Palenque ruins. Not much else around aside from crafts as far as I could tell. Spent 3 nights, 2 would have been better but I was frazzled after 2 all day journeys in 3 days, first from Lanquín to Sayaxché then Sayaxché to Palenque. After Palenque I hit the Caribbean Coast at Playa del Carmen and the nearby ruins at Tulum which were not impressive and today the ruins at Ek' Balam near Valladolid which were very cool and not mobbed like Tulum most likely owing to the fact that's it's a bit of a production to get there but well worth it. US$ ≈ 13 Mexican pesos (M$) Accommodation and food Arriving late after the interminably ... read more

North America » Mexico » Chiapas » Palenque March 30th 2014

Hola. After a 9 hour bus trip from Merida, we decided to skip Campeche, we arrived in Palenque. It was quite different to all the othe town. Firstly we had gotten used to grid fashioned streets which just had numbers as names so it was very easy to get around. Palenque is very small but hilly and tge streets have names like 2a Novembre and it is next to another 2a. It is a bit confusing at first but we finally found our Posada. Next morning we headed to where the collectivos gather, have I mentioned how awesome collectivos are? We got in one and headed over to the Palenque ruins. Although we got there early it was already pretty hot and really humid. The ruins cover a massive area but they have only uncovered from ... read more

North America » Mexico » Chiapas » Chamula February 22nd 2014

Dzisiaj wybrałem się do miasteczek San Juan de Chamula i Zinacantan. San Juan de Chamula to miejsce niezwykle oryginalne. To miejsce ciekawych praktyk religijnych. Społeczność wywalczy... read more

Wczoraj rano (po nocnej podróży autobusem) dotarłem do San Cristobal de las Casas. Podróż z Oaxaca byla koszmarna. Po raz pierwszy od wielu, wielu lat miałem chorobę lokomocyjną :-) I to jeszcze jaką! Masakra! Samo San Cristobal de las Casas ... read more

This is just a quick post with pictures from Mexico. Most are from Tonala, the city we stayed in the night before we went to the beach. I can't remember the name of the beach we were at (I'm sorry!), but it was near Boca del Cielo. The beach was just gorgeous and we were practically the only people on it! ALSO - I'm not sure how to take my pictures from InstaGram and upload them to the blog, but if you really want to see the picture of the lizard poop on the soap (and plenty of other good ones from daily life down here!) the link to my InstaGram is here: http://instagram.com/nikicuster# Besos amigos!!! xxoo... read more
