HE SAID... Today we were travelling southwest from Palenque to San Cristobal de las Casas. We woke early, as we had a 7:20am bus to San Cristobal. Depending on the activity of the Zapatistas, the trip was going to take between six to nine hours. We were more than happy to contribute to the movement’s support for indigenous Mexicans, but the decision was out of our hands. The bus company makes a daily decision on the safest route from Palenque to San Cristobal. We checked out of Hotel Xibalba, walked to the nearby bus station, had a quick coffee, loaded our packs into the baggage compartment and settled in our comfy seats. We were once again travelling on a luxurious ADO bus, this time with complimentary ear plugs for the movies (a welcome change from the ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling southwest from Merida to Palenque. We woke early, as we had an eight hour bus trip ahead, and we needed to leave for the bus station at 8am. We headed down to the hotel breakfast area around 7am and had coffee, watermelon, toast and pastries. We checked out of Hotel Reforma at 8am, jumped into a taxi and headed to Merida’s bus station. We checked in our bags, boarded the luxury bus (i.e. recliner seats, leg room and toilets) at 8:30am and settled in for the long day of travel ahead. We were leaving the Yucatan Peninsula and heading into the region of Chiapas. We drove along the Gulf of Mexico for a while, and then headed back inland. The landscape was predominantly rural forest, with numerous burn-offs coming right ... read more

Today was another long 9 hr day with a relatively short 220 km trip to Palenque firstly stopping at the normally shimmering blue pools and waterfalls of Agua Azul. Slow trip due to more winding roads dropping nearly 2000 mtrs from misty mountain forests through rain forests almost to sea level all the while negotiating over 600 speed bumps along the way to slow cars as they pass through small indigenous communities. All the way the temperature was increasing as we descended. These villages are very poor & not well looked after by either the state or federal government's & survive on growing their own corn, beans & raising chickens. Education is only to primary level. Agua Azul waterfalls are know for their turquoise colour which comes from the limestone-rich content of the water however recent ... read more

This morning was the most facinating part of the trip so far when we visited the communities of San Juan Chamula and San Lorenzo Zinacantan in the highlands of Chiapas, near San Cristobal. While both are Maya descendants they have very different mystic traditions and are immediately identifiable by the colour and style of their traditional clothing. Chamulans wear black & white while Zinacantans wear multi-coloured dress with intricate flower motifs. Zinacantans work as a collective selling arts & crafts, fruit & vegetables for 10% with the rest goes into a pool with the seller also getting a share of the pool whereas Chamulans don't share. The churches & customs are another point of difference but unfortunately no photos allowed. While the outsides are the same Spanish style construction & the inside include alters & statue's ... read more

Today was a very long 14 hr day with a nightmare 2.30 am wakeup call for a 3am start to a 720 km drive to San Cristobal de las Casas. A number of us had difficulty sleeping due to firework explosions every half hour or so up to midnight for some festival. The mood did not improve over the first 5 hrs to our breakfast stop. The no doubt beautiful mountain climb through the Sierra Matlan range was a gut wrenching experience with constantly winding switchbacks & turns. After breakfast we rejoined the main highway & left the corkscrew behind & soon passed a narrow istmas with a 260 km gap between the Atlantic & the Pacific oceans & home to over 900 wind turbines due to the constantly blowing winds. The early start was to ... read more

South of the Border It was a hard couple of days ring in the heat after leaving String in Fort Pierce to get the repair sorted on his BMW as it turned out to be a faulty fuel pump, but the guys at Treasure Coast Motorcycles fitted a get you to Texas pump off a Buick car. I was chased out of Florida by a huge thunderstorm that forced me to put on my wet riding gear for the second time since I left home. It was all over in ten minutes and I had to take it off again. The run down to Curtis and Janet's was a uneventful apart from dodging all the bloody trucks going or coming from Mexico. I arrived at Curtis and Janet's to find Trevor and Kim already settled in. ... read more

Well, being up around 0500hrs has gotten unfortunately common. Today we were looking to head back into Mexico from Flores, Guatemala. Being up this early allowed us to catch up with Jon, a dutch guy doing a border run to reset his visa. We tagged along on his coat tails since it sounded like he'd done this before. We wanted originally to cross at near Bethel and do a river border crossing, but Jon was crossing at El Ceibo so we went along with it. During the long bus ride we learned Jon had opened a surf school on the pacific coast of Guatemala and it had only been open three weeks. It was cool hearing about all the stuff he had to go through to get it going. Anyways, we were able to take a ... read more
