This will have been the quickest visit of Tijuana! We will cross Tijuana Sunday morning while the drug lords and their family are at church praying for their sins. We had a great day yesterday in San Diego with Helene (poor Alan had to work...) We enjoyed a bike ride, picked up the "apparently required insurance certificates for Mexico", enough pesos to get us to "La Paz" so we can cross to the mainland (Mazatlan) with the 12 hour ferry. But one step at a time. It will take us 4 days to get there! Yesterday, we met Bob (not our Bob, but Bob, a San Diego born gentleman, at this glorious Irish bar in San Diego so we could send us off the proper way to Mexico. Connecting is what matters... and we had fun ... read more

Welcome to Tijuana, Tequila, Sexo, Marijuana.

Saturday January 10th, 2009 to Thursday 22nd January,2009 “What the hell are you going there for ?”, “You must be mad”, “Be very careful”, just three of the things that were said to me when I spoke of my intention to journey one hundred and thirty miles to the south to spend a Saturday night in the border crossing town of Tijuana, Mexico. With 858 deaths by the bullet in 2008 and seven on the Wednesday prior to my departure the people who made those remarks probably had a valid point but I answered the first question with the perfectly truthful retort of “for a bit of an adventure” thinking the chances of me becoming just another numberical statistic at the hands of the Arellano family run Tijuana Cartel to be pretty remote. The TJ Cartel, ... read more

Mexico - if only for one day. Tijuana is a typical border town that thrives on offering anything imaginable that is either not quite acceptable or down right illegal on the US side of the line. The only qualifiaction required - cash! The formalities were quite straightforward - just walk through the gate. We parked the car in one of the large parking lots just by the border and strolled on through. A combination of seedy bars, over enthusiastic vendors and ladies keen to meet a gringo attract the underage drinkers from California and those just looking another passport stamp.... read more

So here we are, we can officially boast that we have ridden our bicycles from Canada to MEXICO!!!!! I really can't believe it. People have been asking us a lot of questions about the trip, so consider this our FAQ blog, now that we have 92 days of cycling under our belt to talk about. We've even divided it into handy easy-to-read sections for simple navigation, because let's be honest here - you're probably not going to read the whole thing. It's long. And, if you are going to read the whole thing, flattered as we are, shouldn't you stop procrastinating and start studying? I hear it's finals time... ;-) Here's the breakdown: Section 1 : The NUMBERS Section 2 : The hogs Section 3: The On-the-Road experience Section 4: Observations from the Road Section 5: ... read more

Mexico, Tijuana, 04-10 2002. Not my first time in this sleazy and tawdry border town that attracts hordes of americanos on any given day either on a shopping spree or else for cheap booze, s*x and gambling. Whatever is illicit in the USA flourishes here, you just need a full wallet. Though Tijuana is the gateway to Baja California, most visitors never get beyond this sin city which main streets are broad and full with one-day visitors, curio shops and souvenir sellers. You can even get your photo taken in the presence of a burro painted like a zebra from Africa. Rumour has it there is a huge population of locals camping outside the city in a massive tent city waiting for a chance to hop across the border illegally hoping for a better life, a ... read more

As we were so close to the Mexican border, we decided on taking a day trip to Tijuana. Wanting to make a day of it, we got ourselves out of bed at 8am and drove the 15 miles south to the border. The rules of of hire car stated that we must not cross into Mexico, so we parked at a motel close to the border and casually walked across. We walked through 2 turnstiles and were in Mexico without even seeing an immigration officer. Surprised at how easy it had been, we headed directly to the information centre. After retrieving a map and getting some tips we walked the short journey into central Tijuana. On the way, we were joined by an older American who asked to walk with us as "it was safer". This ... read more

Another early start for me again, Can't sleep for some reason up an hour and a half before everyone else. Thank god for the laptop! After breakfast we decided we would head across the border to Tijuana, Mexico and then come back and spend the afternoon/evening at Seaworld. We drove the 20 minutes to the border and parked up then began to walk across before changing our minds and jumping on a shuttle bus. We got off and strolled through a mini shopping centre, then 'OMG' got hassled big time, Particularly Nige and my mum - Cos of her grey hair I think, Well they kept going on about it anyway, trying to sell her silver jewellery cos it matched her hair! Then one guy said to Nige "Let me sell you something you don't need" ... read more

Next stop Mexico! Now the plan was to stay here for a few nights but on good advice from other travelers we decided to just make it a day trip! So glad we did, not a place I would be too interested in visiting, a couple of hours was more than enough! We went to Tijuana to the shopping district; Tack City! All the owners stand outside trying to coax you in,not very pleasant at all, especially if you stick out like a sore thumb which we did! Our tour guide Dave gave us a heads up on some of the shops worth going into. My favourite shop had to be of course the liquor store where we sampled around 6 different tiquiela's!!! There was also some sort of car exhibition thing on, some of the ... read more
