The border town of Tijuana could not be more different from the US, however, this place is not typical of any mexican town as it is so close to the US. Americans come here to buy cheap medicine and cheap beer and this is reflected in the number of pharmacies and bars. We visited with a hostel organised shopping trip because prices there are so low compared with the US and the place is famous for silver. The thing that hits you most is the poverty here, its a stark contrast to the USA with people everywhere all trying to sell you something or other. Children in particular no more than 5 years old will follow you down the street trying to sell you something and they don't give up easily! You also have to feel ... read more

Don't go! Don't go! Its dangerous. Dodgy, dirty. Scream the locals from Mexico and California alike. Armed with little more than a passport and a mere trickel of money we ventured over. Curious, intrigued, yet the entire time cautious of the many scams we had heard horror stories about many times over. Treading further past the boarder, our guards were at the ready, cat like reflexes ready to dodge the flow of bullets and knives surely coming our way. Despeart locals trying to steal their way through life. Still further we walked, no, no taxis they're run by the mafia (supposedly) they'll take you for a ride for sure. Plus downtown's only a ten minute walk away... Minutes pass, ten in fact, after we start to realise nobody here is threatening, not on the main streets ... read more

Plagued by a potent combination of insomnia and restlessness, I left my house at 4:50 in the morning, got a quarter-full tank of gas, and headed south. Destination: Tijuana. Why? No real reason other than to see it, I guess. But isn't that the reason we travel anyway? I've lived a stone's throw away from Mexico for most of my life, but never really took the opportunity to make the jump, save for a brief trip with my dad about 10 years ago. Granted, Tijuana may not be the Lonely Planet destination of the year, but I figured it was worth experiencing. Plus, my mind was working on a severe lack of sleep, so it seemed like a good idea. Heading south on the 805, I was met with the bright lights of the city looming ... read more

As we are only a stones throw away from the border it seemed churlish not to go across it. Not that we really found ourselves in Mexico. Tijuana is more like a gigantic discount pharmacy for Californians. The pharmacies even have touts out on the streets trying to entice customers in, you can buy just about anything except codeine or amphetamine based medications (although round the back streets........), Viagra and Cialis seem to be big sellers along with antibiotics and anti-herpes medication. Probably so you can get your moneys worth with cheap hookers and then hope you can clean up the resulting mess. Strangely the Corona tasted somewhat better south of the border, maybe because it’s half the price. Easiest border crossing ever going south, different story heading north. Wonder if it will be any easier ... read more

Mexico was our beach holiday within a holiday. Despite all the hassle getting there (the scenery on the way was amazing though - see the last two photos), we had a great time experimenting with Mexican food, speaking the odd bit of Spanish and drinking tequila in various cocktail combinations.... read more

Mar 14 This morning it was so very hard to get up; that tile floor is doing a number on my back. Today we worked our asses off and were able to complete our glorious sidewalk. Go us! This was in between playing movie star as the kids wouldn’t stop asking for our autographs which I was more than willing to give. A few of my favourites were Matt signing “Matt is Hot” or my “Sometimes I like to sit and eat watermelons while pondering the meaning of the world surrounding us”. They’ll never know what we’re actually writing so why not have fun with it? We were almost finished when we were stopped shortly for a assembly with the kids. It was so cool as the different grades presented us with different cards they had ... read more

Mar 13 The group actually got some work done today; there were still the usual slackers but we still clocked in a semi-complete day. Hoorah. I got in some soccer playing with the chicos which turned into more of a swarm of little Mexican kids chasing a ball. I got a goal! Oh the pride. I got made fun of for having blue bear along with me. Everyone thought I brought him along for the kids. When the toy collecting went down today and I wouldn’t let people take him I realized the Jig was up. Now people keep hiding him on me, so I have to hide him in my sleeping bag so that he’ll be there for me when I got to bed and no-one will take him. Taegan and I had a nice ... read more

Mar 12 Today was a day of no work. Convenient that yesterday we couldn’t work at all because of the rain and today we weren’t working because of “other plans”. Why are we here again? Anyways, off to La Bufadora and Ensenada for a day of shopping and sightseeing. Oh, and no drinking; after last night I had to be sure no students were coming back to the bus drunk under my watchful, “responsible” eye. Last years group went to both of these places and so I didn’t have a lot to tick off my list to-do list today. The plan was to continue my search for a belt buckle as mine broke with all that 4 hours of hard work. Other than that I was just going to go with the flow. Upon arrival at ... read more

Mar 10 Well, the day started as I expected. The morning was pretty much a gong show; did I say something about 4 people working, the rest standing around? But I have to admit, once more tools arrived we were pretty hard at work. I was in charge of dumping heavy loads of dirt into a pile under the bleachers. It smelled, and I joked about how the assortment of smells was just me. Turns out, 4 hours later, that the kids like to go number 1 AND 2 back there. I think I still feel light headed. The group is a bunch of pansies and at first rain they packed it in… two hours early. We had some delicious lunch and were stared at by all the little Mexican school girls and then off to ... read more
