A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. English Bay
View from beach along Point Grey Road.
Beautiful English Bay Granted the Travelling Canucks are not beach babes, but we love sitting like blobs on a log at the beach, walking or cycling along the seawall, or just driving by the beach to enjoy the scenery! You might find us at the beach watching the sunset, beachcombing for shells or shutterbugging, you just won't find us in bathing suits! With approximately 18 km/11 miles of beaches surrounding Vancouver's English Bay to explore, there are miles of sand to make sandcastles and lots of vantage points to watch windsurfers, kiteboarders and sailors catchin [View Full Entry]

Day 127 North America » Canada » Quebec
We headed off in the morning for Quebec city, only a 7 hour drive. We stopped at a couple of places along the way for fuel and managed to find a dollar store where we purchased some food to cook on our Walmart stove when we eventually got to a campsite. We got on the road again and stopped just outside Quebec in a place called Montgomy. We checked in to a campsite where the guy just said pay in the morning. It was getting dark and the tent area was on its own peninsula. The clouds were pretty grey and [View Full Entry]

Having arrived from Stockholm on Friday evening I thought I had plenty of time to organise myself for my long-awaited holiday. Not so. I turned up at the Heythorp Street Hotel late on Friday evening, where Sarah had very kindly agreed to put me up at short notice. We spent several hours gossiping before I headed to my own spare room for a kip - a strange feeling but a very comfy bed Saturday was spent rather pleasantly with brunch on the South Bank with Emma, Rosie, Steve, Nat and several thousand children, followed by a desperately needed pampering at the [View Full Entry]

Our last day with mom & dad in Georgetown.
Toronto to Vancouver So after many months of waiting, finally Penny’s permanent residency visa showed up. That meant that we could now head to Vancouver. We said goodbye to my parents, and jumped in Beast for the highway to catch up with some college friends of mine in Northern Ontario on the way out of Ontario. We stopped in to visit Julie, and her husband Dave and kids. It was great to catch up, and to make things even better Julie supplied us with a big bag of home made cookies…they were awesome! Then we went to Christine and Steve’s friends [View Full Entry]

The Prodigal Son Returns... Well, it was a bit of a round about trip but I finally made it home last night about 7:00pm - 26 hours late and none too soon to start work Saturday morning. I will catch up on sleep for a few days and then will do most of my responses to emails, etc, after that (I have over 500 emails to wade through...). It has been a pleasure to travel with you all! :-) Todd [View Full Entry]

Bear sighting and more!!! We are in Edmonton! It has been a long day. We weren't even on the road an hour this morning and we saw a black bear on the side of the road! No kidding!!! We turned around to take a picture and he ran into the woods. He was a good size bear! Jamie was disapointed that he couldn't put an arrow in him but whatever!!! I only took a couple of pictures today because there wasn't really anything exciting to see. As far as scenery goes, it was beautiful, but boring!!!! We also saw a Moose [View Full Entry]
