A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Hi all This is my last blog for this trip - apart from when I get home and put a few photos on . Tomorrow evening I fly back home from Toronto and will be back at Gatwick on Tuesday morning. These last few days have been a nice easy time - no big drives or spectacular scenes - but some lovely local walks in Conservation areas - one was by Lake Ontario to savour the last colours of fall. Also I met up with an old friend and work colleague, Elisabeth, from when I worked in the Psychiatric Hospital here [View Full Entry]

Today started out great, with the sun shining brightly, a gentle breeze, and 10 degrees today. Wow, such wonderful weather!! We left with our first desination being old Québec, La Basilique-Cathèdral Notre-Dame de Québec. This church was absolutely amazing. I loved the architecture, the paintings, the glass, the statues, it was all amazing. Unlike some of the other Churches we have been too we were allowed to take pictures, just no flashes and while the tourists were allowed inside there was a section that was closed off, being utilized as prayer space for the congregation. The Church even [View Full Entry]

There is something very cool sounding about the name Saskatchewan. This is one of the low profile provinces - sparsely populated, known for its extensive flat prairies on which vast quantities of wheat are grown, a growing oil and gas industry, and increasing mineral extraction, particularly uranium. The province even has a city called Uranium City. On Canadian Thanksgiving, we jumped on the Greyhound from Edmonton to Saskatoon. Ah Saskatoon, the city of bridges and the Paris of the Prairies (as they call it). It is a beautiful small city of around 200,000 people situated around the So [View Full Entry]

Day Nine...

North America » Canada » Quebec » Montréal
Bonjour ... Today, the plan was to get up at 8:30 and be gone around 9:30 this morning. Well, if you've been reading this blog do you think that's what happened??? We checked out at around 10:55 because I was thinking we had to be gone by 11, however, it was actually noon! Our first stop was to be the Oratory of St. Joseph. Again, if you have been following this blog, you'll have seen a picture of a model of the Oratory in day seven or eight, I forget. Well that didn't turn out so well. We followed the directions [View Full Entry]

On my autumn journey to Vancouver Island, I first explored the historic city of Victoria, British Columbia's provincial capitol, standing like a slightly wilted eccentric English Dowager on an inlet of the Georgia Strait, her tiara symbolized by the majestic Empress Hotel overlooking the Inner Harbour. Directly across from the hotel lies the Provincial Legislature building, another gem of architecture of which Victoria is justly proud. I started my exploration in the adjoining community of Esquimalt, the p [View Full Entry]

I'll be living out of this thing!
The preparations are ongoing, day by day I'm getting more organized. YES! MORE organized, MORE prepared, MORE frightened, MORE excited. Is this going to be awesome or what? Today, I ordered my hobo-locker (Alone, I will gives Hobo's a good name. This will no longer be a derogatory term!). Yep, a brand spankin 35 liter Gregory backpack. This is an excited day! I went to downtown Grande Prairie to a outdoors store called Valhalla Pure. In here, i browsed the various packs on the wall, mostly getting an idea of sizes. I tried on a much larger Gregory pack then [View Full Entry]
