If you've ever traveled abroad then you know one of the easiest ways to identify a Canadian is to look for the Canadian flag sewn on their backpack. Sure, at first glance Canada may seem to resemble the country it shares a common border with, but don't be mistaken. This country is quick to distinguish itself from its American neighbor and you might even say Canada is a little friendlier, a little more laid back and, of course, a lot colder. For starters, this cosmopolitan country has two official languages, French and English. And then there's the province of Quebec, considered to be unique in culture with cities like Montreal and Quebec City that boast a rare European old world meets modern metropolis fusion that's unseen anywhere else in North America. Canada also has a reputation for being a tolerant and even peaceful society - except when it comes to hockey! The country is known for its gay-friendly immigration laws and legalization of same-sex marriage. And as a highly developed nation rich in natural resources, Canadians enjoy a comfortable lifestyle where the country is generous in providing its citizens with social services, most notably, universal healthcare.

Canada has an abundance of lakes so getting around the country is likely to include a ferry trip at some point. Otherwise, traveling by car can offer a spectacular opportunity to experience Canada's natural beauty. Various scenic drives cut through Canada's wilderness and allow the nature loving traveler to stop along the way to hike, camp, fish and spot wildlife - even Moose or Grizzly. If you still want to stay active but don't wish to take your chances with the wildlife, then cycling one of Montreal's many bike paths is another great option. British Columbia also has stunning national parks and exciting cities. If you head to Vancouver, keep your eyes open for celebrities. Behind LA and New York City, Vancouver is third in entertainment TV and film production. The city is also host to the 2010 winter Olympic games.

Highlights

 • Yukon Take the Yukon wildlife scenic route and explore rivers, trails, wildlife and more. The highway connects the US to Alaska via Canada.
 • Vancouver , British Columbia Home of the 2010 winter Olympics, visit Grouse Mountain, just 15 minutes outside of Vancouver. The mountain has year-round activities including skiing, ice skating, paragliding and mountain ziplines.
 • Niagara Falls; Ontario See the Great Lakes and the majestic Niagara Falls
 • Quebec Culturally and architecturally rich Francophone province in Canada

Day 131 North America » Canada » Ontario » Niagara Falls
Feeling a little worse for wear we managed to get up in time for the wonderful pancakes that the hostel made for breakfast! They were actually ok surprisingly! After packing up and loading the car we hit the road and headed down towards Niagara falls. When we eventually arrived we stayed on the Canadian side as the views looked better. The falls were pretty spectacular but different to what we imagined. The city of Niagrara falls is built around the falls themselves, i thought that they would be outside the city but the falls actually divide the USA and Canada, pretty [View Full Entry]

Cath and I are mostly moved in now to our new place. It's been a bit stressful moving in and then moving out plus planning a wedding. We are pretty much set for Saturday departure. Cath organized all our food for the Dhaulagiri Trek. Janet (my sister) and Cory just had their second baby - Ewan on Oct 6th. We are very happy to see the baby before leaving. We are headed down to the Whip Restaurant tonight to say bye to everyone, then only one more sleep until departure for Beijing on Saturday at 1pm! [View Full Entry]

Icefields Parkway and Columbia Icefields Friday Sept 18: The Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) runs north from Lake Louise to Jasper, and it's all within the territory of Banff National Park and Jasper National Park. It's a spectauclar drive! (230km/144mi.) Although I rode along part of it in 1970 with my 3 friends, Ellen, Marty and Kitty, just after we left college, I had no memory of its grandeur. I can only think it must have been a rainy, cloudy day so we couldn't see it, because it seems it would be impossible to forget this road otherwise. And I do recall [View Full Entry]

The first of many inexpensive and awesome gigs that we are going to over the next few months, and hopefully the entire duration we are living in North America. Gigs are sooo insanely cheap here- Aimee Mann was only $35 incl fees and taxes, and most of the others are $25 or under. It feels great to go to music gigs again, to enjoy music with great crowds and atmospheres in pretty decent venues too. Thanks Chloe for coming with us! [View Full Entry]

ARB & DWS 2009 Canadian Adventure (number 3) Hello all from DWS. It is some days since our travel blog number 2 was published when we were still on the Sunshine coast, and with only two days remaining this will be our final edition for this trip. We were sad to leave the Sunshine Coast which had been reduced from 10 to 5 days for our 5 day exchange on Pender Island. It started with a ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo, where Noelle ( our home exchange host in Victoria) met us in pouring rain. Then a long drive down [View Full Entry]

Bon apetite to 2 ladies of Leisure
A visitor on Pender Island

The leaf colors in Algonquin Provincial Park were really amazing. Neither of us had seen such a variety of brilliant reds and oranges and purples and yellows. They were luscious and delectable and delicious - a feast for the eyes. We spent two days of “Ohhh’s” and “Ahhh’s.” We hope you appreciate the view from Booth Rock (first 2 photos). It was an hour and a half hike, a good bit of it uphill and a portion boggy and slippery; it ended with 167 high steps to the top of the rock. It was one of the 5 hikes listed as [View Full Entry]
