A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. St. John’s port was canceled due to severe weather. Lunch with Judy & Diana in the dining room. Great hamburgers. Went and saw “The Proposal” again - it is a great movie with Sandra Bullock and very funny. Be sure and see it. [View Full Entry]

Day 123 North America » Canada » Nova Scotia » Halifax
We got on the road at a good time and headed for Halifax. When we arrive we picked up Megan from her college and she took us on the grand tour of Halifax! We went to the harbour and then sat in a coffee shop before heading to Megan's brothers place where we had dinner. Megan has learn't to cook and made muscles, we couldn't believe that she could do that as the last cooking experience that i had with Megan almost ended up with a house fire! [View Full Entry]

We are finally heading into the mountains and cannot wait. We’ve spent 2 days in Calgary and the city is rather sprawled out and although it is the 3rd biggest city in Canada there doesn’t seem to be a lot of people around. The hostel is on the outskirts of the CBD and just around the corner from the car rental place, an added bonus. The people of Calgary seem to be an eclectic lot with varying appearances. We met a really helpful guy in a camping store that got us sort of ready for our Incan Trail and advising us [View Full Entry]

Day 128 North America » Canada » Quebec » Montréal
After waking up and packing up to go we hit Quebec city. We only had a few hours there and wondered into the old town inside the walls. It was a stunning place with some great views of the bay and ships. It seemed really strange being in Canada but the city was like anywhere in France. Then we headed into the farmers market and grabbed some much needed brekkie after last night's disaster meal! After strolling the streets we jumped back in the car and headed down the road for the 3 hour drive to Montreal. Arriving in Montreal you [View Full Entry]

day 129 North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto
After a good nights sleep we headed for Toronto where we were picking up our friend elliott for a week on the road in norman (our car). We got into the city around 3.30 and had to be at the airport for 5 so went to find a place to stay. We found a hostel right in the centre, about a 5 minute walk away from the airport. Then went off to pick up Elliott. We collected him and squeezed him and his stuff into the sideways seats in the back and went back to the hostel. After checking in we [View Full Entry]

Well we’ve made it. Its 5.20am on a Sunday morning, there is no public transport running, haven’t slept for 24hrs and taxi’s are as scarce as hens teeth. When we finally get a taxi we arrive into our hostel via the seedy morning streets of Downtown Vancouver and I could be mistaken that I am back in Amsterdam. We are staying on the outskirts of Gastown. One of the oldest areas of Downtown Vancouver and being on the edge of Gastown means we are on the edge of the seedy side as well. Two blocks to our right we are told [View Full Entry]

Not content with a 17 hour marathon journey yesterday, and clearly missing Winnipeg airport already, Chris, Ro and I headed back there shortly before 9am on Tuesday in search of a Greyhound. A very friendly and helpful man behind the counter relieved Ro and myself of $52 apiece, in exchange for a 5 hour road trip to Grandview, Manitoba. Five hours sounds like a long time, but when you have years of catching up to do, the time passes very quickly! Undoubtedly we entertained/irritated the entire bus for most of the journey with our various stories. But we were happy and [View Full Entry]

On my way to Tofino I offered a ride to a native American man called Sayachapis (Matthew Williams by his colonial given name). This ride was the beginning of a unique encounter and an unforgettable travel experience. During the drive, Sayachapis offered me to stay on his own little island near Tofino, called Indian island. I finally ended up staying for two days on Indian Island, enjoying the most beautiful nature and listening to Sayachapis stories of cougars and bears by candlelight, not always being able to distinguish between fiction and reality. Two days without electricity and running wa [View Full Entry]
