If you've ever traveled abroad then you know one of the easiest ways to identify a Canadian is to look for the Canadian flag sewn on their backpack. Sure, at first glance Canada may seem to resemble the country it shares a common border with, but don't be mistaken. This country is quick to distinguish itself from its American neighbor and you might even say Canada is a little friendlier, a little more laid back and, of course, a lot colder. For starters, this cosmopolitan country has two official languages, French and English. And then there's the province of Quebec, considered to be unique in culture with cities like Montreal and Quebec City that boast a rare European old world meets modern metropolis fusion that's unseen anywhere else in North America. Canada also has a reputation for being a tolerant and even peaceful society - except when it comes to hockey! The country is known for its gay-friendly immigration laws and legalization of same-sex marriage. And as a highly developed nation rich in natural resources, Canadians enjoy a comfortable lifestyle where the country is generous in providing its citizens with social services, most notably, universal healthcare.

Canada has an abundance of lakes so getting around the country is likely to include a ferry trip at some point. Otherwise, traveling by car can offer a spectacular opportunity to experience Canada's natural beauty. Various scenic drives cut through Canada's wilderness and allow the nature loving traveler to stop along the way to hike, camp, fish and spot wildlife - even Moose or Grizzly. If you still want to stay active but don't wish to take your chances with the wildlife, then cycling one of Montreal's many bike paths is another great option. British Columbia also has stunning national parks and exciting cities. If you head to Vancouver, keep your eyes open for celebrities. Behind LA and New York City, Vancouver is third in entertainment TV and film production. The city is also host to the 2010 winter Olympic games.

Highlights

 • Yukon Take the Yukon wildlife scenic route and explore rivers, trails, wildlife and more. The highway connects the US to Alaska via Canada.
 • Vancouver , British Columbia Home of the 2010 winter Olympics, visit Grouse Mountain, just 15 minutes outside of Vancouver. The mountain has year-round activities including skiing, ice skating, paragliding and mountain ziplines.
 • Niagara Falls; Ontario See the Great Lakes and the majestic Niagara Falls
 • Quebec Culturally and architecturally rich Francophone province in Canada

A guy who was staying at the hostel gave me a lift to Edmonton, which is the capital of Alberta. I spent the weekend here, went to the cinema a couple of times, and attended a concert by virtuoso classical guitarist Remi Boucher, which was pretty amazing. But was aware that I could go to the cinema at home, and wasn't really justifying the trip. This sense of becoming slightly directionless and 'losing my way' became more pronounced as I ventured further east into the prairies. I spent a day in Saskatoon, mostly in an art gallery/museum, since it was free. [View Full Entry]

We celebrated our first Canadian holiday this weekend, by giving thanks...for good food and good company! None of the locals can give me a reason for why the holiday is celebrated a month before the American Thanksgiving, and many of the locals thought it was a worldwide tradition! Clearly there are many misunderstandings about the holiday... So, looking up trusty Wikipedia, this is the reason we are supposed to give thanks this weekend.... "Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day (Canadian French: Jour de lAction de grâce), occurring on the second Monday in October, is an annual Canadian holiday [View Full Entry]

It felt a bit strange taking myself off the blackberry server at work today. Feeling a bit free I'd say. No work for 2 1/2 months :) Here's a picture of Cath trying to fit everything in her new backpack. Take out the hairdriers! :) Blog entry by Dean. [View Full Entry]

Im leaving tomorrow for a trip around the world, i have no definite plans other than i land in new delhi on october 13th 4 am and i have one year to get to australia before my work visa expires. The length of my trip through asia pretty much depends on when i run out of money, right now i have just over $12,000 thats I've saved from working the last year. Most of my money is in bank accounts that I'll access through debit cards, i have $500 in US travelers cheques, and $400 in american cash. For anyone thinking [View Full Entry]

We had been looking forward to this for a long time - a true holiday, not the crazy kind we had become used to where you stay in a different city every night. (I guess we have Dahlia to thank for that change in approach!). We had booked tickets with Anth’s frequent flyer points nearly a year ago, but had actually wanted to come since we first visited Canada in 2005. We loved it back then in Spring, but everywhere we went people told us ‘you should have been here in the Fall’. So we came in the Fall, to the [View Full Entry]

The Canadians are amazing in their efforts to reduce garbage. At each provincial campground where we stayed, they had bins for glass, plastic, aluminum, compost (including most paper and cardboard, even dairy and meat), and whatever was left -- the garbage. Needless to say, there wasn't much garbage after all the other receptacles were used. Note photo. I'm also sending some photos of a couple of animals we've seen, some tableaus from the Algonquin Museum, and our other two travel companions, Becky and Jasmine. They're just wonderful travelers and fun to have around, except around 5:00 AM [View Full Entry]

In the remote interior of British Columbia, halfway between Williams Lake and the fishing village of Bella Coola, lies the small community of Kleena Kleene. In the heart of Tsilhqot'in territory and criss-crossed by the Klinaklini and McClinchy Rivers, it is snuggled between Ts'ylo-s Park and Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, offering many beautiful photographic opportunities. The Chilcotin (Tsilhqot'in) is an expansive region renowned for its varied topography, abundant wildlife and spectacular landscapes - from rolling fields to snowtopped mountain peaks, and grasslands to rainforests. Have you planned your stay in Kleena Kleene to explore our fabulous surroundings? There are many hikes and sights in the area. Good fishing is from June 1 through mid September. The Klinaklini River offers good fishing, and nearby One Eye Lake and Big Stick Lake are both good for fishing, boating, canoeing, and even good swimming! Plan to visit Perkins Peak. Wildflowers there are spectacular around the second week of July. Views at the top are excellent! Devote at least 4 hours to this drive/hike. The Klinaklini Falls are just 7 km off hwy 20 a relatively easy hike, but [View Full Entry]
