If you've ever traveled abroad then you know one of the easiest ways to identify a Canadian is to look for the Canadian flag sewn on their backpack. Sure, at first glance Canada may seem to resemble the country it shares a common border with, but don't be mistaken. This country is quick to distinguish itself from its American neighbor and you might even say Canada is a little friendlier, a little more laid back and, of course, a lot colder. For starters, this cosmopolitan country has two official languages, French and English. And then there's the province of Quebec, considered to be unique in culture with cities like Montreal and Quebec City that boast a rare European old world meets modern metropolis fusion that's unseen anywhere else in North America. Canada also has a reputation for being a tolerant and even peaceful society - except when it comes to hockey! The country is known for its gay-friendly immigration laws and legalization of same-sex marriage. And as a highly developed nation rich in natural resources, Canadians enjoy a comfortable lifestyle where the country is generous in providing its citizens with social services, most notably, universal healthcare.

Canada has an abundance of lakes so getting around the country is likely to include a ferry trip at some point. Otherwise, traveling by car can offer a spectacular opportunity to experience Canada's natural beauty. Various scenic drives cut through Canada's wilderness and allow the nature loving traveler to stop along the way to hike, camp, fish and spot wildlife - even Moose or Grizzly. If you still want to stay active but don't wish to take your chances with the wildlife, then cycling one of Montreal's many bike paths is another great option. British Columbia also has stunning national parks and exciting cities. If you head to Vancouver, keep your eyes open for celebrities. Behind LA and New York City, Vancouver is third in entertainment TV and film production. The city is also host to the 2010 winter Olympic games.

Highlights

 • Yukon Take the Yukon wildlife scenic route and explore rivers, trails, wildlife and more. The highway connects the US to Alaska via Canada.
 • Vancouver , British Columbia Home of the 2010 winter Olympics, visit Grouse Mountain, just 15 minutes outside of Vancouver. The mountain has year-round activities including skiing, ice skating, paragliding and mountain ziplines.
 • Niagara Falls; Ontario See the Great Lakes and the majestic Niagara Falls
 • Quebec Culturally and architecturally rich Francophone province in Canada

It was fun, cozy and easy going. Good times. Well, what else? Went [View Full Entry]

Bonjour! It’s a hot and muggy afternoon in Florida, with the thermometer registering 97F, and I am shopping for a wool coat and long boots. The insanity is justified, however. I’m travelling to Montreal in a couple of days, and it’s minus 1 to 6 degrees Celsius (31F)! Changing from flip-flops and orange-blue summery outfit (the Gators’ homecoming explains the choice of colors) to somber and heavy clothing, I headed to the airport under one of those stormy Floridian afternoons. Charged $25 per checked bag, I am reminded that we are still in recession mode. On t [View Full Entry]

One of the most startling things moving to Canada from Europe, is the much maligned vacation allowance. In order to maximise the opportunity to see Canada, we decided to set of for a rather long road trip to Montreal for Thanksgiving. All of our Canadian colleagues have no issue driving long distances and see this as part of the norm- which is hugely different from my usual plans; as I would rather take a short plane trip easyjet style. Anyway, after work on the Friday, we filled up the Jeep, set the GPS and set of for Montreal. As we knew [View Full Entry]

Greetings from sunny Petawawa Thank you so much for taking the time to check in on my travel blog. I hope to update this regularly while I am on holiday in Argentina to keep you up to date with our adventures. Today I shall continue with preliminary packing and planning. Packing light with an infant is a new challenge in my life. I may have to say no to the hair dryer and the flat iron. How will I manage? Preparing for this trip is an exciting time. I have taken Malaya out of province and to New York for a [View Full Entry]

Today has had its share of ups and downs shall we say. It started off with a suprisingly bright start and the sun even rose and shone through the gap between the horizin and the clouds for a few minuites. After that the clouds started looming ominously and it was time to get things underway. Along the way, in preparation for rain, I have bought some white bin bags to aid in the waterproofness of my panniers. And so they were put over the top to make my bike look great! It was then that I realised my tyre had gone [View Full Entry]

Test of Endurance North America » Canada » Ontario
When I agreed to take the two and a half hour flight northwest from Toronto to Winnipeg to meet Ro and then the 5 hour bus ride further north again, I didn’t quite connect that with the reality of having to get back to Toronto. Overland. Circumstance and some planning meant that we split that return journey into 3 parts. But we’d done the shorter legs and were now left with the mammoth 26 hour trip from Thunder Bay to Collingwood, Ontario to meet our next host. Over the course of the last couple of journeys on the Greyhoun [View Full Entry]

Day 27  North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver
Today I awoke, as I expected I would, to the pitter patter of rain drops on my tent and with 100km to the ferry to go there was little time for sitting around so I was up and off by 8.45 and the rain had even stopped. Bonus. My first 10km today was all uphill. No-one had told me that the highway climbs from sea level up to 350m on Vancouver Island, wow that’s a way to wake up. Being used to hills by now though it was a case of shift into a low gear and let the legs work. [View Full Entry]

The first winter storm.
The first winter storm.
The snow blew and the wind howled for five days, changing the landscape to a white, snowy world.
Hey guys! I thought I would try and update the blog fairly frequently, as there are many bears around, and I am sure you would all like to see some of the action? Winter has arrived... We had our first winter storm, and the land and lakes are now frozen in time. There is actually sea-ice forming around the shoreline, something we don't normally see until very late October or early November! I have my fingers crossed for an early freeze up, it would hopefully do wonders to our bears! During the last few days we have had a couple of [View Full Entry]

Hi guys. I just wanted to share some pictures of abandoned buildings. Throughout the summer George and I have been exploring some of the uglier parts of Churchill too! During the 50s and 60s Churchill had an American navy base and the population bustled with over 5500 (today it's 850). Most of the buildings were destroyed, as the Americans didn't want to leave a functioning base, just in case the Russians decided to come over. A few building were used for a few more years before they were deserted and left for the elements to take their toll. Every town has [View Full Entry]

My trip to nigara falls wasn't the most normal but it sure was alot of fun. The first thing we did when we got there was walk up and down the main strip of nigara. The main strip of the town looks like an amunsemnet park. Next we walked down the street and went into the guniess world records. Nothing really that interesting in there. After that we made our way down to the falls where we meet up with the rest of the school since we took a car with our teacher ot get there. So after we met up [View Full Entry]
