A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Grouse Mountain is the location of a very popular hiking trail known as the Grouse Grind. It is an extremely steep and mountainous trail that climbs 853 m (2,799 ft) over a distance of 2.9 km (2 mi), with an average grade of 30 degrees. The trail, nicknamed "Mother Nature's Stairmaster", is notoriously gruelling due to its steepness and mountainous terrain. Hikers, who often time themselves on the trail, reach the top in approximately 90 minutes on average, although some who are very fit can finish in 45 minutes. This time we made it in 60 minutes! (Little better than average...but [View Full Entry]

Let the countdown begin. been out shopping preping camera and hiking gear. I seem to be an impulse traveler as I got home from a job I hate sat down and purchased tickets to Australia without consulting my girlfriend. lol. but hey! its the time of a life time so how can you be mad for that. sitting doing research on locations and parks to visit, deciding on weather to buy a car or 4x4... the 4x4 seems very practical to my style of travel... which is anywhere the wind shall take me. Why Australia? its natural untouched beauty, its [View Full Entry]

Well, I'll admit this up front. This will probably be my first and only post on this blog, barring any other Natural Disasters lessons that require the use of this and what-not. The main reason why is because of the fact that I don't travel very much . Well, anyways... Our trip to Niagara Falls started when we got on the bus at about 8:00 AM. When we finally got there at about 10:00 AM, we went to the Maid of the Mist Ticket Booth, as you can see from my image to the left of me. Sadly however, our planned [View Full Entry]

On October 7th 2009, our, Birchmount Park CI natural disasters class along with a travel and tourism class was lucky enough to go down and see Niagara Falls for the day. It was a very long bus ride for the amount of leg room you were given, but in the end it was all worth it. When we first got to the falls, we were all fascinated just taking in what was there in front of our eyes(one of the seven great wonders of the world). It was very fun watching the falls, other than the fact you got a little [View Full Entry]

Hey guys. The highlight of the week this week was during a trip to the dump!!! It's not uncommon to see a big, dirty polar bear rummaging through the food scraps at the town dump, but I was super excited to see a wolverine! He (or she) was all straggly, gnarly and grumpy looking, and although the backdrop of plastic garbage bags and piles of Pampers wasn't visually inspiring, it was a very powerful experience! My first ever wolverine. So cool! Buggy 17 got into a wee bit of trouble out on the tidal flats near Polar Bear Point. The driver [View Full Entry]

Another travel blog, for those still reading After spending a month in sunny England i was very ready to be leaving to another country. OK, so its not that I dislike England. I loved been there with all my friends and such. But the weather depressed me.....and the thought of going to Canada was an exciting one. I was a bit nervous about the Canadian border, after hearing a couple of stories of people been turned away or crazy questioning. I dunno why I was nervous I was perfectly legal, but i guess I wanted to be in Canada so much, [View Full Entry]

To being our trip, we all met up at the school at 8 so we could get on the road as soon as possible. When we first got to Niagara Falls, one of the seven wonders of the world, the first thing we had on our list was go on the Maid of Mist. Unfortunatly since it was a crummy day out, and there was a bad storm the night before , the docks were flooded! Might have been a good thing since it was freezing outside. As we looked for somthing to do Niagara Falls-related, we waited at a Tim [View Full Entry]

During her trip, Ro is spending a week at each farm she visits, and about a month in each province. We figured that we could just about fit 2 provinces and 3 farms into my trip, Poplar Glen being the first farm, in Manitoba (Ontario will be next). I guess I was a little apprehensive about this whole WWOOFing thing - you turn up at a lonely bus stop, are picked up by a total stranger and taken to their farm, whereupon you live in their house and eat their food for a week. But I have to say, it’s amazing [View Full Entry]
