If you've ever traveled abroad then you know one of the easiest ways to identify a Canadian is to look for the Canadian flag sewn on their backpack. Sure, at first glance Canada may seem to resemble the country it shares a common border with, but don't be mistaken. This country is quick to distinguish itself from its American neighbor and you might even say Canada is a little friendlier, a little more laid back and, of course, a lot colder. For starters, this cosmopolitan country has two official languages, French and English. And then there's the province of Quebec, considered to be unique in culture with cities like Montreal and Quebec City that boast a rare European old world meets modern metropolis fusion that's unseen anywhere else in North America. Canada also has a reputation for being a tolerant and even peaceful society - except when it comes to hockey! The country is known for its gay-friendly immigration laws and legalization of same-sex marriage. And as a highly developed nation rich in natural resources, Canadians enjoy a comfortable lifestyle where the country is generous in providing its citizens with social services, most notably, universal healthcare.

Canada has an abundance of lakes so getting around the country is likely to include a ferry trip at some point. Otherwise, traveling by car can offer a spectacular opportunity to experience Canada's natural beauty. Various scenic drives cut through Canada's wilderness and allow the nature loving traveler to stop along the way to hike, camp, fish and spot wildlife - even Moose or Grizzly. If you still want to stay active but don't wish to take your chances with the wildlife, then cycling one of Montreal's many bike paths is another great option. British Columbia also has stunning national parks and exciting cities. If you head to Vancouver, keep your eyes open for celebrities. Behind LA and New York City, Vancouver is third in entertainment TV and film production. The city is also host to the 2010 winter Olympic games.

Highlights

 • Yukon Take the Yukon wildlife scenic route and explore rivers, trails, wildlife and more. The highway connects the US to Alaska via Canada.
 • Vancouver , British Columbia Home of the 2010 winter Olympics, visit Grouse Mountain, just 15 minutes outside of Vancouver. The mountain has year-round activities including skiing, ice skating, paragliding and mountain ziplines.
 • Niagara Falls; Ontario See the Great Lakes and the majestic Niagara Falls
 • Quebec Culturally and architecturally rich Francophone province in Canada

The roaring water streaming down the river, it falls off what seems to be a 1,000 foot drop. It almost seems as though time stops when the water is free falling into the niagra river. Then it suddenly crashes to the water bellow creating a thundering echo and sending mist all over the surrounding area. It is one of the seven wonders of the world, it truely is spectacular. I am talking about the NIAGRA FALLS... incase you were having a bit of trouble figuring out what i was talking about. Last week my Natural Disasters class went to see the [View Full Entry]

Sitting on the Edge
My trek to Niagara falls started off with a very early mourning having to be at school for 7:50 am which is normally when I get up to get ready for school. Once arriving at school a few minutes late I met up with Sam, Andrew S and Cam because we were chosen to drive up in Ms Brown’s car. Driving up was a long ride because off all the traffic and having to sit next to Sam. I was a little bit scared for the first half an hour while driving up with the teacher because I thought it was [View Full Entry]

On October 7th 2009, Birchmount's Travel&tourism and Natural Disasters class decided to go to the beautiful Niagara Falls for a class trip. We all loaded the bus at 8am sharp, and got on the road. It was a long 2 hour drive, but most of us got some sleep. As we arrived, the weather was horrible. It was cold and very rainy, so we couldn't go on the maid of the mist as planned. We all went into a building with gift shops and decided to go see a movie. Niagara's Fury was a 4D movie that brought you inside the [View Full Entry]

The bus out of Grandview was much fuller than the one we got on the way out there - the perils of travelling straight after Thanksgiving I guess. So Ro and I sat cramped for 5 and a half hours with our hand luggage on the floor under our feet. I’m not entirely sure why the “express” service between Grandview and Winnipeg took longer than our slow service on the way north, but I am learning not to question the Greyhound way... At least the sun was shining and we could stare out of the window at the endless prairie skies, [View Full Entry]

Jessica's Trip to Niagara Falls From Toronto we got on a bus to Niagara Falls. The bus ride was a lot of fun. On our way their we stopped for some breakfast at Tim Horton's. I got a BLT, and it was amazing. When we arrived in Niagara Falls the first thing we went to was ' The Maid of the Mist' beneath the falls. After travelling through the falls we went through all the hauted houses and mazes that were there, which were really fun. I got lost. After the mazes and haunted houses we went out for lunch at [View Full Entry]

I'm writing this on a train ride to Florence from Rome where we've just had a beautiful vacation for the weekend that I'll write about...after this. We visited Canada for a quick 10 days but well worth it considering the visit to family and friends in the beautiful Vancouver summer. We started out after a relatively painfree flight by going home and having a great night of sushi and gyoza, fulfilling the tradition to have sushi as soon as we get home. It was nice because we got to eat at home and go to bed straight away afterwards which was [View Full Entry]

Having contacted loads of outfitters and tour operators about a canoe trip in the Algonquin Provincial Park, and being told that the season was over, I found a wilderness outfitter who was prepared to set me up with a voyage along the Mattawa River, following the route used by the French Voyageurs, and the native Indians before them. Two nights and three days on my own, paddling my way down the river, and camping on the way. I spent the preceding (rainy) night in a town called North Bay, in the Voyager Inn, which I thought appropriate. I [View Full Entry]

At 8am on October the 7th we departed from school onto a two hour and a half trip to Niagara Falls.I hadn't been on a field trip with school in a long time so I couldn't wait to get out there with my class mates and make the best of of this soggy day. When my teacher ,Ms.Brown told us that we were going to get a few hours to enjoy the activities I got even more excited because i never experienced that side of Niagara falls. After what seemed like a lifetime we finally arrived.I couldn't wait to go onto [View Full Entry]
