Today's plan was to be a real tourist and see a few of the famous sights in Quebec City. One of them is the Ice Hotel. The Ice Hotel is located just north of Quebec City. Each winter they build a new hotel made of ice and snow, changing the layout, number of rooms and artwork in the ice and snow. Each spring the Ice Hotel melts and disappears. The cost of construction is about $3 million. It is approximately 35,000 sft. There are 36 suites and rooms in the hotel. The suites have different themes based on the artwork inside them. The artwork in the ice and in he snow walls is pretty amazing. I guess people actually stay here overnight, but there is no heat so I'm guessing they are pretty bundled up when ... read more

I arrived in Saint Raymond yesterday. The total trip was just about 1,000 miles from home. This is really pretty country here, very hilly and rural. And lots of snow! Originally I planned to ride from here to Riviere du Loup in the Gaspe Peninsula where the guided tour is going to start, but I stopped at this snowmobile dealer to pick up my 7 day Quebec trail permit ($180, ouch) and after going over the map with the guys at the dealership I found out that it would be about a 400+ km ride (around 250 miles). This, by myself, before starting a 1,200 mile tour on Sunday seemed like a bit much, so I've decided to drive the truck and trailer to Riviere du Loup. The people I've met so far have all been ... read more

Tomorrow I depart for my snowmobile tour of Quebec's Gaspe Peninsula. I'll be going on a professionally guided tour with a company called Bonvoyage Snow Adventures, run by Gary Pruitt. I will be trailering my sled trailer with the Old Burban 990 miles to Quebec City over the next 2 days. I will ride my sled alone from there to the town of Riviere du Loup in the Gaspe Peninsula south of the St. Lawrence Seaway. That will be our starting point for the tour. We will ride the perimeter of the peninsula north of Maine and New Brunswick. Riding approximately 1,200 miles in 6 days. This is my first ever visit to Quebec and I plan to see the old Quebec City before I start the riding. It looks like it will be a new ... read more

Our journey to Quebec City actually went off without a hitch, but I can’t remember the last time I felt so unsettled before a trip. We decided a couple of weeks ago to make this trip. Quebec City had been on my wish list for a long time and I decided if we came in winter we could see the famous ice hotel. To actually book the ice hotel is very expensive unless you get a last minute deal. So, I decided to take a chance on the last minute deal, but even though we planned to stay there during the week, it didn’t work out. That was roadblock #1. Then we had trouble booking a rental car, and we had trouble booking other hotels. When you hear that the “busy season” in QC is June ... read more

We flew into Montreal and took the train to Quebec City. It was a few days prior to Christmas and the area was blanketed with snow. We had planned on spending Christmas and New Years with family members, both from Quebec and the states, so we rented a large two bedroom apartment off of Rue Ste-Jean. Temperatures dropped and climbed, however they hovered at several degrees below zero Celsius and sometimes made it to the zero mark and above. Quebec City is a cold place in winter. At the end of December, family members left for the states so we moved to another smaller apartment with one bedroom. We watched as the weather played havoc with airline schedules in the northeast part of the U.S. It even snowed in parts of the southeast where it doesn't ... read more

If you come to my city, here's what you absolutely have to see. I'll guide you. As a french colony, catholic specially, we have many churches. I'll post some pictures, but of course, you have to see them by yourselves! But be aware : some are already demolished! So, if you're planning to come here, check first if your travel guide is not too old! As over 40% of us have scottish blood (not english!), we do have traces of that part of our history too. Like the English part as well. And, of course, being a major city of "the new world", we have Jews since the beginning of the colony too. They actually had to tag along with the Protestants because Catholics were French and the majority. So it's a little harder to find ... read more

In one short month, I will begin my three month journey around India. Excitement doesn't begin to cover the range of emotions I am experiencing at the moment in regards to this trip. There are so many fears, so many expectations and more hopes than I've ever dared have at any given moment, all bundled together in a nice little package by the door in the bedroom. It's full-blown winter in Quebec City - the wind bites the skin you are foolish enough to leave exposed, the snow blinds you with it's onslaught and impedes your every step with its ankle-deep mass of slushy muck. All in all, it's a mess. But it's a mess I will miss quite a lot I think. I laugh and tease my friends and co-workers about being in Goa in ... read more

We arrived in Quebec, after just over a three hour train journey, with changing scenery, but most of it was very flat, with the occasional mountain in the distance. There was only three carriages on the train which was quite a surprise, the journey was comfortable, the train had mains points and WiFi, quite fast too. We arrived at Quebec station, took the tourist pictures of the train, and headed to find our hotel, the main part of the station was very pretty and very french, quite impressive for a station. Our walk to the hotel was set for an hour by Google maps, so we knew we had quite some time, but we did not know we had to climb up a hill, the maps don't show hills, remember we have all our luggage too, ... read more

Well, it’s been an interesting couple of days in France. No, we have not skipped across the ocean to Europe - the primary language of Montreal and Quebec is French, and so we feel as though we’ve been in France. I particularly felt like I was in France while in Quebec, as the charming little cobblestoned streets reminded me a lot of France. Craig and I knew that people spoke French in Montreal and Quebec, but I don’t think we were expecting to have so much difficulty with the language barrier. We were expecting signs to be in both English and French. They rarely were, it was mostly all French. Thankfully most people spoke English, although when we arrived in Montreal and were picked up by a cab driver who couldn’t speak English, we did get ... read more
