Welcome to the very last blog. I can’t believe that we fly home tomorrow. While we’re both looking forward to seeing our friends and family and having the luxuries of not living out of a suitcase or wearing the same clothes every day, we’re quite sad that our trip has come to an end. It certainly hasn’t felt like we’ve been away for five months, but when we think back to places we went to towards the start of the trip like San Diego and the Grand Canyon, it feels like it was a very long time ago. It was only fitting that we ended our trip with a second visit to Chicago, Craig’s favourite city in America. But before that… We had a lovely drive down from San Francisco to LA. We spent the first ... read more

San Francisco…what a beautiful city! Everywhere you look you can see something iconic and so obviously San Franciscan, like the Golden Gate bridge, Alcatraz out in the bay, the steeply-hilled streets, the apartments with big bay windows and fire escapes and cable cars. It’s all so cool! We had a late start on our first day in San Fran due to having to wait for our suitcases to arrive via courier. They arrived at about 11am, and then we walked down to the pier where we would catch a ferry across to Alcatraz. The walk involved climbing many of San Francisco’s infamous hills - my GOD, some of them were SO steep! It was very tiring! We walked past the “world’s most crookedest road” in Lombard Street and got some good photos. It was really cool ... read more

Forks, Washington

Yesterday we drove to Forks, Washington. Forks is the setting of the Twilight novels. For those who have no idea what I’m talking about, the Twilight novels are kind of like Harry Potter for teenage girls and women (just for girls, not women - Craig). It’s a love story between a teenage girl and a vampire. The books have been made into movies, and it was the sets of such movies that I visited in Vancouver. I also tried to spot some Twilight stars in Baton Rouge (to no avail), Louisiana, for those who remember. Now none of the movies were filmed here, but the author of the novels (Stephenie Meyer) visited this town and used the various shops and locations in her books. So you can really imagine that you’re in the middle of the ... read more

Well, Whistler certainly puts our measly snowfields to shame, as I knew it would. It was huge, and then there was Blackcomb mountain as well which was almost as big. And there was so much snow. It was interesting to see that it was a different type of snow to our snow back home - it was so powdery! We had four nights and three days in Whistler. We arrived on Thursday night, and Craig’s cousin Ash arrived on Friday morning to snowboard with us. He has been travelling around since October, and flew into Seattle from the Middle East. It was so lovely to spend some time with him, and I think he really enjoyed being around friends after travelling by himself for so long. (It was awesome to see Ash, really enjoyed the time ... read more

Craig and I have had a great couple of days in Seattle. The city has a really good feel to it, and the people are friendly. Unfortunately we don’t have many stories or photos to show for our time here. So this will probably be a short blog. On our first day in Seattle, we started out with an Underground tour. We didn’t know too much about what we’d be seeing going into the tour, and we were fascinated to learn about the history of Seattle. When the city was growing during the gold rush years, the settlers needed more land that just wasn’t there due to the sea water from the bay and nearby high cliffs. So they used sawdust from a nearby mill to build new land - not the best material to use! ... read more

Alaska has been incredible. I’m so glad that we spent the money to get up here. We’ll definitely have to come back again at some stage in our lives. And in summer next time, to get some completely different views and to see some bears! While we had a great time in Anchorage, unfortunately there wasn’t a lot to do there. We’d anticipated doing some dog-sledding and snowmobiling, but whilst the weather was freezing there wasn’t enough snow to do those things yet. D’oh! (We did get to go dog-sledding in Fairbanks, which I’ll chat about later) The first day that we were in Anchorage, we just had a walk around and checked out the downtown area. There wasn’t a lot going on, so we just wandered in and out of shops. They had quite a ... read more

Craig and I had a feeling that we were going to enjoy Vancouver prior to arriving, and we weren’t wrong. We’ve had a great time. The people have been lovely, and the views of the mountains from the city are breathtaking. It’s been unseasonably cold while we’ve been here - lucky us! The maximum temperatures have been ranging from -5 degrees to about 2 degrees. Good training for Alaska, hey? It’s been snowing a bit too, which Craig has been very excited about! We’re currently on a Greyhound bus bound for Seattle, where we’ll board a flight to Anchorage. Hopefully our day of travelling today will be less painful than our trip to Vancouver! Our flight from Salt Lake City to Denver was delayed, which meant we missed our connecting flight to Seattle and had to ... read more

Hey everyone. I am writing this while waiting at the airport at Salt Lake City. We’re about to catch a flight to Seattle, unfortunately connecting through Denver. We only have a 40 minute layover in Denver so hopefully the first flight isn’t late! From Seattle we jump on a bus to Vancouver. We’re not flying directly to Vancouver because it’s very expensive with international taxes and such. So unfortunately it’s going to be a very long day of travelling! The train from Denver to Salt Lake City was amazing. It runs along the Colorado River through the Rocky Mountains and the scenery is just stunning. Every second that you look out of the window, there’s another postcard picture to take. Our sleeper car was fantastic, it’s so nice having privacy and having a bed to relax ... read more

November 12th 2010

Greetings from Texas, the 14th US state (2 Canadian provinces on top) that we have visited on our travels. Weve had a couple of flying stops in Texas, Houston and then Dallas. Were now en route to Denver, Colorado, for our first taste of some really cold weather - the weather there is currently fluctuating between -1 degree and 6 degrees today, with snow forecast for tomorrow & Sunday. Houston was a lovely, clean, seemingly safe city. Unfortunately there wasnt a whole lot to do there, and we couldnt believe how dead the city was when we were wandering around. The hotel there was extremely interesting. It was a little 23-suite hotel that had a great room with comfy beds, but rude and unhelpful owners. There was only one employee who seemed willing to help us, ... read more

What a time we’ve had in New Orleans! New Orleans is definitely in my top 5 of favourite places that we’ve visited. The city has this incredible life and spirit that I haven’t felt in any other place we’ve visited here. The people are so friendly. All this in spite of the awful things that they’ve been through. It’s an amazing place. The French Quarter is a beautiful spot to wander around. There are lovely old apartments that seem so typical of New Orleans, there are musicians and brass bands on every corner playing some of that old-time jazz, street performers everywhere and artists displaying their work (usually with Louisiana themes). One time when we walked through the French Quarter, there were two high school brass bands of at least 30 members each, duelling with each ... read more
