I'm leaving in a few hours. Once again, I've left packing for the last minute. Hopefully this travel blog - - which would have been a godsend when I was on the road in Southeast Asia for 16 months in 1999-2000 - - will help me capture my thoughts and let you know what's happening in the holy land while I'm there for two weeks. The truth is that I am nervous about heading to a "hotspot" - life has been treating me quite well of late, and I'd hate to suffer the fate of George Costanza (from Seinfeld), who after finally finding his calling as a hand model, injures himself by falling into a hot clothes iron. More when I arrive. I promise to keep this up as long as people are reading it.... read more

Wow, it's been a crazy day! It started off at 5:00 this morning, waking up with the love of my life next to me for the last time in two years because he leaves to serve a mission while I'm in Europe. We finished up my packing and loaded all my luggage in the car and he drove me to the airport. It was a very bittersweet goodbye. I was, of course, balling my eyes out, but it was still a beautiful goodbye. We hugged and kissed and cried together until I absolutely had to leave, then I went through the security line. He stood off to the side and watched me until I got through, then I went up an escalator and stood on and looked at my Nathan, my best friend and my love, ... read more

I've given up starting off by saying that this will be a quick post because it never ends up that way. It is late (1:11 am) and I'm blogging on the laptop in the hotel room since I'm sleepy but not *that* sleepy yet. I went out with Candy and her friend who also happens to be in Montreal tonight - we went to eat chicken sharwma (like a gyro, but Lebanese) based on another friend's (a local) recommendation - it tasted okay but the place was a hole in the wall and Candy felt a bug drop on her arm, it turns out there were lots of bugs hanging upside down on the ceiling, EW!!! We were at the intersection of rue Crescent and Maisonneuve (sp?) which is the area where all the tourists party. ... read more

Blogging on the train from Toronto to Montreal on Microsoft Word. We went with the comfort (nice way to say economy) class so there’s no wifi like the Via 1 class - see, I can go cheap when I have to! ;) It certainly feels like it, with all the jostling for seats and masses of bodies boarding the train - I thought train travel was supposed to be civilized! I had a run-in with a mother who tried to shove past me and a crowd of people to get double seats on the train for herself and her daughter which didn’t help. If she had asked I would have gladly moved aside since as she said, “mothers should be with their children”. Anyway, we went on the marathon Chinese tour yesterday, starting with the casino ... read more

I apologise, it's been a while since my last entry. Well, we're just about to leave Montreal soon, I will miss this city, I've really enjoyed my 2 months here. Shannon, Ben and I have done so much here and we've met some great new friends. And you wouldn't believe it - all the festivals are just about to start here now too for the summer so it's going to be a shame to miss out on that. Working here has been abit difficult for us. Although, I did get a little bit of work with a couple of moving companies which helped me get some more money. It was pretty good work, I did have my moments though, with the really heavy things like washing machines, fridges and huge TV's etc. My back didn't like ... read more

Time to go back to good old Canada.. We drove to Montreal, my 2nd visit there. Of course Mat wanted to see old Montreal and downtown too, two areas that I already visited, but they're nice enough too visit them twice, especially old Montreal. Besides that we've seen some things that were also new for me too.. We've seen Parc Mont Royal, which offers also an amazing view over the rest of the city, especially by night. Furthermore we've visited The Olympic Parc and the University of Montreal. Particularly the last one was nice to see.. Wow, I would have loved to study here, in the middle of an amazing city like Montreal, on such a nice campus.. We were lucky enough to be able to catch a glimpse of a graduation ceremony, American style, just ... read more

This is my first entry in this wonderful blog of mine which I will be updating a few times a week from now on. This will be my first long term backpacking trip and I am planning to cross the planet overland (I'll take flights only accross oceans) for 12 months or until money runs out. I like overland travel because it gives a better oportunity to go to places you wouldn't see if you just took the plane from capital to capital. My current itinerary is as follow: Canada 1 week, Hong Kong/Macau 1 week, Philippines 3 weeks, China 2 months, Nepal 3 weeks, India 3 months, Pakistan 1 month, Iran 2 weeks, Turkey 1 month, Lebanon/Israel 1 month, Eastern Europe 1 month, Western Europe 2 weeks. Even though it looks like I have planned ... read more
