June 3, Thursday Bloomfield P.E.I. ... south of Tignish Took a walk in soggy grass along the cliff of Waterford Campground. Waited till almost eleven and then I escaped the place. Highway 14 runs along the coast and I was heading towards West Cape and the Cedar Dunes Provincial Park. My first stop was Pleasant View Road. Driving down the rutted red road a stop was able to be made. This was going to be my first walk along a shore in P.E.I. I was all excited hoping to find some flotsam treasure. Some rocks, a piece of a wooden lobster trap and some driftwood was all I could scavenge. And so the day continued. I pulled into harbours and access roads to the waterline. In one place while I was walking along the bottom of ... read more

June 2 Thursday, between O'Leary and Waterford The day began well with two soft boiled eggs and good conversation with the other guests staying at the Willowgreen B&B. The couple from Germany who were on a two week trip to P.E.I. showed me their ‘Pink Dream’ room. The last thing to bring to the van was the cooler. Imagine my astonishment when the whirring of the little fan was inaudible. The cigarette lighter socket was dead. The radio was also not letting itself be heard. All the plugs were checked. All the wires were inspected. With trepidation I returned to the Canadian Tire Store. Perhaps the mechanic has inadvertently dislocated a wire when he took the steering apart. The garage manager instructed the mechanic on duty to check the fuses. A number 20 was needed to ... read more

June 1 Wednesday Having slept in the basement maroon room in a B&B that has every surface wallpapered, I awoke to a breakfast that was pure carbo with an added, over the top, sugar fix of unnatural syrup. The day was beginning … highly charged. Organized myself. Gathered everything that could be washed and set of to find the Sun&Suds. Two hours and ten dollars later everything that needed washing including the bed sheets were folded and put away in the van. At 13:00 the van was at Canadian Tire. It would take four hours to replace the rack and pinion steering mechanism. It was Campdays at Tim Horton’s. I sat with a woman who was visiting her daughter at the hospital. Keeping my eye open for a seat in a corner, I ate a crispy ... read more

May 31 Tuesday On the last day of May I drove out of Nova Scotia via the Confederation Bridge. I went first to the Masstown Market for breakfast and blogging time. Cheese on an English muffin with sausage and cheese plus coffee cost $6 …cheaper than Macs and just as good if not moresucculent. By the time I was finished publishing the place was filling up fast. Some people were having chowder for brunch. Highway 4 heads towards Amherst and then The Bridge. The getting was good until the van began making load grinding noises at every turn. Stopping at a gas station and asking for directions to the closest mechanic the van headed for Oxford. I was just a little more than worried and anxious. Finally found the garage. With great expectations I tried the ... read more

NOTE: Due to some poor Internet Connections today Wed. May 18th is the first time I have been able to connect with Travelblog.org. Day 6 - Tuesday, May 10, 2016 - Charlottetown, PEI - Weather forecast: partly cloudy - temperature: 8°C/46°F - actual: temperature 10°C/50°F - in the morning wind 30 knots - 7 Beaufort Over the night the ship passed through the Northumberland Straits between New Brunswick and PEI. Earlier last evening the Captain informed us that he had the option of going either that route or around the north side of the island. The determining factor was if there was to be any fog in the strait near the Confederation Bridge. The ship could not use that route if the visibility was less than 1 kilometer. Since there was no expectation of fog we ... read more

Day 5 - Monday, May 9, 2016 - At Sea - Weather forecast: rain - temperature: 6°C/43°F - actual: temperature 2°C/36°F - in the morning we had snow showers -wind 40 knots - 8 Beaufort The clocks moved forward overnight one hour which when you have a sea day doesn’t really impact your routine too much. The weather was the major topic of the day with the heavy cold winds and the appearance of snow this morning. Some of our fellow passengers from regions further south were not accustomed to seeing snow. The Captain during one of his presentations today welcomed us to the Antarctic. He had recently been commanding a vessel that had operated in that region over our winter - their summer period. Sea days = a great many activities, if you want to ... read more

Prince Edward Island (PEI) is famous for four things; potatoes, lobsters, golf courses, and Anne of Green Gables. Five things, if you include a giant bridge, but that is federal, and shared between two provinces. PEI is also Canada's smallest province - nowhere on the island did we find dramatic landscapes, vast tracts of wilderness or spectacular wildlife - but that's what gives PEI its magic... It's a quiet little island with a gentle land that's easy on the eyes and quite soothing, and quite different from the rest of the country. We spent a week at a nice B&B in the small town of Summerside. Aaron and Sarah were our wonderful hosts, and we were fed tasty and nutritious, breakfasts every morning with many homemade goodies. Summerside is fairly centrally located on the island, and ... read more

Welcome to the potato capitol of Canada! It was really weird seeing all the red soil and sand. Driving across confederation bridge to get into PEI was an experience on itself...but not looking forward to paying about $50.00 to go back on it and get to New Brunswick. The first day we visited the local Community Living then toured around looking at all the natural beauty of PEI. The second day it was spent at Anne of Green Gables. We toured the house that inspired the novel and walked the Lover's Lane trail and the Haunted Woods trail. It was one of Tabi's dreams to come here and it came true. Interesting fact there are no bears, deer or moose on the Island. An interesting guy from Parks Canada told us a bunch of interesting facts ... read more

On our way out of Halifax we drove through a rain storm. Halifax was getting 50mm+ of rain that day. We took a wrong turn, but eventually figured out our way. It was really a neat experience crossing the Confederation Bridge just marvelling how it was built and how long it stretched. Enjoy the pictures of our journey here.... read more

North America » Canada » Prince Edward Island » Charlottetown September 27th 2015

Geo: 46.2365, -63.1282Day 6Following breakfast (lobster benedict), Patrick and I took a stroll around Charlottetown and attended Mass at St. Dunstan's, a lovely Gothic basilica built in 1907.This afternoon we headed to Prince Edward Island National Park located on the north shore of PEI, along the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. It's the third most visited park in Canada, after Banff and Jasper. There are beautiful dunes and soft-to-the-touch, small-grained sand. We stopped at a lobster dock, where Allison spent time teaching us about lobsters and lobster fishing. Among her facts:1. Lobsters shed their shells (molt) in order to grow.2. Lobsters were once considered a poor man's seafood. 3. Fishermen throw back lobsters that are too small or too big or breeding.4. Lobsters can dine on other lobsters, which is why their claws have bands i... read more
