Saturday, July 10th Toronto Blue Jays versus the Boston Red Sox. That's two of the heavyweights of the game we've seen now, both times against Canada's only representatives in the Major League. The Blue Jays are nothing special, but boast good records against the Yanks and Red Sox this year. Last night as we met Mitch for a tasty little dinner in Toronto's restaurant/bar district the Blue Jays were 8-0 down within 4 innings. That might explain a half empty Rogers Centre. Baseball's a funny thing in that respect. With a game a day more or less over the summer months and America's complete coverage of every angle that you could possibly want, including inside the players' trousers as they made that diving catch to the left, there's little reason to regularly fork out the 10 ... read more

Thursday, July 8th Our short stay in NY is over, Amy and Mike have the final tounches on their wedding to plan. Superb hosts, lovely place. Thanks again to both. We arose at 5am (about the same time as Wall Street Mike) to get the tube to Penn Station. I got chatting to some American sportswriter who passed on his views why Americans hate football. Sorry, soccer. Mostly it seemed to be about concentration span/lack of intelligence. He managed to squeeze in the standard "oh bloody 'ell" in a posh English accent. Why do they all do that? Our Amtrak train was comfortable, housing all types including some Amish - never seen those before. They looked over with envy at my DS. I looked over in envy at thier crazy beards and old-timey hats. The view ... read more

The Gay Pride Parade. The parade must have been two hours long in the blistering heat. The week end attracts about a million visitors to Toronto. There's a very prominent sub-culture of gays just two blocks north of my residence, but this week end the whole street lights up with big burley guys in leathers holding hands, really big transexuals strolling about , muscle men in their speedos and if you're familiar with Saturday Night Live, you'll understand "Pat look-a-likes". The parade had representatives from the Toronto Police, The Mounties and even the the British Bobbies (see photo). Political celebrities included national political leaders and local mayoral candidates for the upcoming election and even TV's Rick Moranis was there. The whole parade route was lined at least three deep with spectators. Unless you got there ... read more

So the day has finally arrived. It is a day that I have waited for anxiously but at the same time I wish it was still months away. The plans for this trip have evolved, morphed, mutated into many different forms. Countries have been added or removed, the scope increasingly became larger. This will be my second solo trip. It was not originally planned as a solo trip but due to some circumstances, I will go at it alone. I dont have a problem going alone, it at times can be lonely but there is a freedom and liberating feeling to it. Sometime I wish I could have someone to take my picture or watch my bag while i go to the washroom but its nothing major. As Im about to leave I realize I would not ... read more

So begins another grand adventure! I love writing in airports… I love airports period. I don’t know what it is about them - the hustle and bustle perhaps? It’s just fun to people watch such an eclectic crowd. Duty-free is so nice and cheap here… I hope Reykjavik’s prices have gone down since last time - I’m sure they have considering the economy over there. I’m tempted to bring Brennivin back again just to make people try it… gah, that stuff was fierce. And not in the good way. Bus ride to Toronto was quite the journey. For starters, I sat beside a mother/daughter form Iceland haha. What are the chances?! I saw them again at the airport, and then sat one row behind them on the plane lol. They teased me that I was stalking ... read more

Still making the most of our off-season, Team Ted decided to check out the moves of some other "athletes" with a visit to the Rogers Centre - home ground of the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team. Although we demonstrated our allegiance with a pre-match purchase of Jays caps (mainly to hide Ted's hair which kinda needs a cut...), the opposing team were none other than the Yankees which is actually Teddy's team. Fair-weather fan that he is... Tell you what, it was a great way to spend the afternoon! Although neither of us are particularly huge fans of baseball (and struggled with a couple of the calls - Davis eavesdropped on other fans' conversations to establish what was going on) it was still brilliant to be at the ... read more

On Friday, Darina had the afternoon off work so we all headed down to Chinatown for some Dim Sum for a late lunch. It's nothing like the Chinese food we get in the UK, a lot less is deep fried and a lot more of it is steamed or boiled. Rachel wasnt too keen on it, and it certainly wasnt my favourite out of all the food we have eaten here (and there has been a lot!) We had a nice walk round Chinatown, lots of vintage clothes shops and little food stores and restaurants, and made our way towards the Rogers Centre, the home of the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team. As we arrived a couple of hours before the game, we had a wander round the area and popped into the Steamwhistle Brewery, where ... read more
