Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Niagara Falls - another border town, but at the opposite end of the spectrum from Tijuana. The town seemed to have tried to corner the market as Canada’s combined answer to Gretna and Las Vegas. As well as an unparalleled view of the Falls, the opportunity to gamble and tie the knot. The Falls themselves rank in a lowly place in the hierarchy of waterfall height, but represent a pretty impressive wall of water. Whereas our Victoria Falls experience in the “dry” was hardly the smoke that thunders (see Livingstone I Presume) and the Tugela Falls as the second highest waterfa [View Full Entry]

I decided at the last minute to take the kids somewhere fun during the Christmas vacation. Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls, Canada is an indoor water park about 30 minutes from our house but we've never been there before. Lots of kids from my area talk about visiting Splash Lagoon with their families, which is also a waterpark a little further away in Erie, PA. Ever the budget traveler, I decided we'd go to the cheaper of the two and I'm so happy that it turned out to be Great Wolf Lodge. I'm on the mailing list for Splash Lagoon [View Full Entry]

In about 2 months time, I'll be boarding a plane going on a 15 hour journey to Israel for 6 whole months. I am 24 years old, born and raised in Ontario, Canada, not Jewish, have no family there and know (kind of) 3 people in total that live in Israel. The usual reaction I get when I tell someone I'm going to Israel for 6 months by myself is "Are you crazy?" ... The answer to that question is yes but that is not the reason I'm heading on this endeavour. There are quite a few actually... The first and [View Full Entry]

We had not much planned beforehand, but one thing was certain: we were going to see the Niagara Falls. I've heard about this since I was very small (got a feeling it was from a children's book), so this was an absolute must. There were flyers at the hostel saying that we could go there with a bus for 45 Canadian dollars, but we wanted to check out the train option. We passed some kind of tourist office on the way to Union station, and the lady there tried to sell us a more expensive bus trip than we had seen [View Full Entry]

As part of our long weekend, we drove to Niagara falls. We got a free room upgrade from the hotel and had a falls view of the actual horseshoe falls. By the time we got there and were ready to go out, it was pretty late. We walked across the strip and went to the R Lounge for drinks( lounge bar that overlooks the river and falls) and had some nice local wine and tapas ( Niagara does fantastic wine due to the climate of the area). After a few drinks in the local bars, we went late night gamlbling [View Full Entry]

So we are on our way. Kindly taken by Robin to Heathrow, but it was a bit over the top of him to wear a suit and tie ! And he did go on about Cyprus all the way round the M25. Anyway we get to Toronto and jump in a car for the 2 hour journey to Niagara, only for us to hit the local rush hour and a traffic jam. But when we got to the hotel and opened the curtains - wow - the view of the Horseshoe Falls lit up at night was amazing. Up early the [View Full Entry]

It was quite late by the time we arrived in Buffalo as we had to fly through New York to get here. We got a taxi straight to our hotel and were just sat chilling watching a bit of TV when Sharon called to say that she had sent the Fedex and the wallet would arrive by lunchtime the next day. This meant we could still go and hire the car and once again Sharon had found out where we could go that was close to us and it turned out Avis was just down the road. With all that sorted [View Full Entry]

Hiking on Niagara Peninsula A group of us were taken on a trip out to the Niagara Peninsula. We went for a hike through the Woodend Conservation Area. We had a picnic then visited the falls, shopped in Niagara -on-the-lake and had dinner in the Pillar & Post. Fantastic Day. [View Full Entry]

Niagara Falls

Well, we had to sadly say goodbye to the Rockies! But canada seamed to have a hold on us as the GPS went crazy and we ended up in farm territory, I felt like dorothy in Kansas. We finally made it in one piece to the airport and were on our way to Niagara Falls! Had to stay overnight in New York to get to the Falls in Buffalo (US side) and then walk across to the Canadian side. Well, the Americans didn't want to make it that easy and this little old lady tourism officer refused to tell me how [View Full Entry]

Due to our delays (which have been up to ten hours) as we travelled across the country by train, we discovered that we had lots and lots of Via rail train credit. So for our eight hour train journey from Montreal to Niagara falls we could afford to travel first class. Was awesome we got food and loads of wine. Niagara was much like I expected, a compleate contrast of the natural beauty of the falls teamed with a street of tourist attractions, tacky shops and a glittering shiney big wheel. America is literally a bridge away from you in Niagara [View Full Entry]
