A Marmot on the loose.
We saw this cool little creature posing on the side of the road. Geo: 43.1066, -79.0642
I want to start off with my story about Nightmare Fear Factory but can't, because it was one of the last things we did today. I will have to save it for the end.
Many that know me understand that vacation for me means doing as much as possible in the little time I have instead of doing as little possible as most people would have it. I even bought a book before the trip to help me sit in one place for some time. Needless to say, I have not opened the book.
The day started early, around 7 a.m. I thought I had really slept in. I wondered out the door to the empty streets where I found a lady in a nearby restaurant who graciously gave me a coffee to go. Sipping my coffee, I checked the computer then broke my phone, yes, for the 3rd time on a vacation. This is now barely worth mentioning.
Once Alex was up we decided to take a recommended drive along the river. Following the winding road, we went through vineyard country not far from the town. Magnificent homes lined the road but all along, the grape fields
Cool place in a very historic town
We saw this beautiful place as we were driving through a little town. remained behind them. We saw vineyard after vineyard as well as cherry trees. Historically ignorant of the events of this area, we road through apparent final battle locations of the war of 1812. I plan on researching this further at a later date, but it is quite interesting that a road runs right through such a historic area. I really wish I had my metal detector, although the Canadiana Mounted police might take issue. Along the way we witnessed black squirrels, chipmunks, and a large marmot. (The Marmot exited Alex) The ride also provided awesome views of the river below where we found a jet boat center.
Crazy is how I would describe this next part of our day. Boats are not supposed to go 40 miles an hour, then all of a sudden pull a 360 spin followed my a wave of water flooding over the passengers. This was only the beginning of a harrowing ride into Class V rapids on a jet boat powered by 2 800 Cummins Turbo Diesel engines. *Of course, this part was via contribution of my technical adviser. I was able to get some good GoPro video of the tidal waves washing over the
boat as well as Alex getting his face washed by 4000 gallons of water at one time. All this after they said keep both hands on the bar. What fun would that be? I need memories after all.
We met some nice people on the boat ride, even paying forward the rides others have given us on prior vacations.
Jumping forward, just to get to probably one of the funniest times I have experienced with Alex, and we have had plenty, I will try to describe the Nitemare Fear Factory event. To give those who don't know an idea of what this is, they have a haunted house type attraction where they actually have a safe word you can yell if you are too scared to continue. My brother and sister in law turned us on to this place when she was unable to continue more than a few minutes in. The Factory brags of over 100,000 chickening out. Fearless, my brave son and I were up for the challenge. He valiantly entered the black door into the darkness, and fell completely apart from there. We were supposed to keep hold of one another and follow the very dim red
The Whirlpool
This is the area in the river where all the water from the falls washes down to a 90 degree turn but can all make it so it swirls around. We were told this area is a few Empire State buildings deep. lights through the building. At first Alex was in the lead, but that quickly changed. The scare house involved everything from hands grabbing at our ankles in the darkness to having to craw on our hands and knees while strange noised came from different directions. At one point, while I bravely was leading us through, Alex almost strangled me and knocked me down as some troll looking creature came at us in the darkness. I have to say, I almost died of laughter. I highly recommend this place to anyone who finds themselves in this very touristy town.
Tomorrow we plan to leave our Canadianian friends and return to our wonderful USA!!!
But first, we will take an early morning Maiden of the Mist ride up to the Niagara Falls.
Good night all.
